HDMI vs. DisplayPort for Dual Monitors: What You Need to Know

For two monitors, connect each display to a suitable computer output when possible. Use DisplayPort MST for a one-connection hub or daisy chain only when the computer, operating system, and displays support it.

For two monitors, the simplest setup is usually to connect each display to a separate video output on your computer. HDMI and DisplayPort can both serve that purpose when the computer supports the monitors’ required resolutions and refresh rates. DisplayPort’s Multi-Stream Transport (MST) is useful when you want to connect multiple displays through one compatible connection—but it requires support from the computer, operating system, and hub or monitors.

Start with the connection your computer supports

There is no universal winner between HDMI and DisplayPort for a dual-monitor setup. The right choice depends on the complete connection path: the computer’s available outputs and graphics capability, the monitors’ inputs, the operating system, and the display modes you want.

  • Two suitable computer outputs: Connect one monitor to each output. Either HDMI or DisplayPort can work if the computer supports the screens’ resolution and refresh rate on those outputs.
  • One DisplayPort connection for multiple displays: MST may allow an MST hub or a compatible daisy chain, provided every part of the setup supports it.
  • Laptop USB-C or Thunderbolt: These ports may carry video through DisplayPort Alternate Mode or Thunderbolt, but the USB-C connector shape alone does not establish that capability. Check the exact computer and dock specifications.

Before choosing cables or a hub, check the computer or graphics specifications for supported display count, output capabilities, and resolution and refresh-rate limits. Also decide whether you want the monitors to extend the desktop or mirror the same image.

What DisplayPort MST does

DisplayPort Multi-Stream Transport (MST), available with DisplayPort 1.2 and newer, can send multiple display signals through one DisplayPort connection. Intel describes two common arrangements: an MST hub splits the connection into multiple video outputs, while a daisy chain connects one monitor to another in series. See Intel’s explanation of DisplayPort MST.

  • NOTE1: Please ensure that the display resolution and refresh rate settings are consistent to avoid abnormal display; High-resolution data transmission will cause the chip to heat up, please don't worry too much

MST hub

An MST hub connects to a compatible DisplayPort source and provides multiple display outputs. It can be a practical option when the computer supports MST but does not have enough separate video outputs for the displays. Confirm that the hub’s supported outputs and display modes match your monitors, and that the source can provide the required combined bandwidth.

Daisy chain

In a daisy-chain setup, the computer connects to a primary monitor, then that monitor connects to a second one. Dell says the computer needs DisplayPort 1.2 or higher, USB-C with DisplayPort Alternate Mode, or Thunderbolt 3 or higher for its documented setup. The primary monitor must support MST or another supported chain connection, and only selected monitors provide MST. Check the monitor manual for MST support and, where applicable, a DisplayPort output for forwarding the connection.

A DisplayPort socket does not by itself prove MST support. Intel recommends checking the computer’s specifications or asking its manufacturer. Dell also advises using current graphics drivers; some monitor models require MST to be enabled in the on-screen settings. See Dell’s monitor daisy-chain guidance.

Can you daisy-chain monitors with HDMI?

No—not in Dell’s documented monitor daisy-chain setup. Dell’s answer is: “No, daisy chain setup is not supported over HDMI.” HDMI can still be used to connect a monitor directly to a separate computer output; that is different from chaining displays through one connection.

An HDMI splitter is also not the same thing as a DisplayPort MST hub. Check the specific splitter’s documentation to see whether it supports independent extended displays or only duplicates one source signal; the word “splitter” alone does not tell you which behavior to expect.

macOS and MST daisy chains

Dell and EIZO state that macOS does not support extended displays through a DisplayPort MST daisy chain. This does not mean Macs cannot run multiple external monitors: it means Mac users should verify a different supported route for their exact model, such as suitable direct outputs or a compatible Thunderbolt setup. EIZO’s guidance is available at its overview of maximum display connections.

Resolution, refresh rate, and total bandwidth

EIZO states that DisplayPort 1.2 has 21.6 Gbps of bandwidth. That is an aggregate link figure, not a guarantee that a particular computer, hub, or monitor combination can run two displays at a specific resolution or refresh rate. The achievable combination depends on the available bandwidth and the devices in the connection path.

As a product-specific illustration, Logitech lists these MST combinations for Logi Dock: one monitor at 4K and 60 Hz, two at 4K and 30 Hz, four at 1080p and 60 Hz, or six at 720p and 60 Hz. Logitech says those combinations were tested on a limited set of equipment and are not guaranteed for every computer and monitor combination. They are Logi Dock examples, not general DisplayPort limits; see Logitech’s Logi Dock display guidance.

Why is my second monitor not displaying?

Check the connection path in order rather than assuming the cable is at fault:

  1. Confirm the computer can drive two displays. Check the exact computer or graphics specifications for supported display count and output modes.
  2. Verify the port’s video capability. A USB-C port may not support video, and a DisplayPort connection may not support MST. Check the computer’s documentation.
  3. For an MST hub or chain, confirm end-to-end support. Check that the source, operating system, hub or primary monitor, and required connection standard all support the arrangement.
  4. Check the monitor settings and drivers. Update graphics drivers and enable MST in the monitor’s on-screen settings if its manual requires it.
  5. Recheck the requested display modes. A setup may not have enough bandwidth for both monitors at the desired resolutions and refresh rates. Try supported modes specified for the computer, hub, and monitors.
  6. Confirm the intended display behavior. Set the operating system to extend the desktop if you want separate workspaces, rather than mirror the same image.
