For TV audio over HDMI, connect the TV’s port labeled HDMI eARC, HDMI ARC, or eARC/ARC to the matching ARC/eARC port on your soundbar or AV receiver. The headline’s “only audio port that matters” is a hook, not a literal rule: this is the port for the HDMI audio-return connection, not a replacement for other HDMI inputs used by video sources.
Which HDMI port should connect to a soundbar?
Look for the ARC or eARC marking beside one of the TV’s HDMI sockets, then connect it to the soundbar’s corresponding HDMI port, often labeled “TV eARC/ARC” or similar. HDMI Licensing Administrator’s eARC overview describes sending audio from the TV to an AVR or soundbar over a single HDMI cable, and its setup guide says to use the TV’s eARC port.

Do not assume that any HDMI socket on the TV returns audio. The exact label and port number vary by model, so check the markings and the TV and soundbar manuals rather than guessing. This connection does not mean other HDMI ports are irrelevant: consoles, players, and other video sources still need appropriate inputs.

How to connect the TV and soundbar
- Find the TV’s HDMI socket marked eARC, ARC, or eARC/ARC.
- Connect it to the soundbar or receiver’s HDMI port marked TV eARC/ARC or an equivalent label, using an HDMI cable.
- Check that both devices support the ARC or eARC mode you intend to use. Consult their manuals for any required eARC, audio-output, or HDMI-CEC settings; menu names and requirements differ by model.
- If there is no sound, confirm that the cable is seated at both ends and that it connects the designated ports. Then verify the devices’ documented ARC/eARC support and setup requirements.
Choose where to connect your source devices
There are two common layouts. Which is suitable depends on the devices’ ports and capabilities; an eARC label alone does not settle every video or audio-routing requirement.

HDMI Licensing Administrator outlines both topologies in its official eARC setup guidance. Check the manuals for the exact models to confirm supported formats, video capabilities, and required connections.
What ARC and eARC do—and what they do not guarantee
ARC stands for Audio Return Channel. It lets a TV send audio over HDMI to a connected soundbar or AV receiver, so a separate audio cable may not be needed. eARC is an advancement intended for higher-bitrate audio and easier device discovery.

According to HDMI Licensing Administrator, eARC supports formats including Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Atmos, DTS-HD Master Audio, and DTS:X. Its overview also lists uncompressed 5.1- and 7.1-channel audio and up to 32-channel uncompressed audio, with support up to 192 kHz and 24-bit. These are technical capabilities, not promises that every TV, source, soundbar or receiver, and piece of content can deliver every format. The complete system must support the format you want.
ARC and eARC compatibility is not automatic. HDMI Licensing Administrator says eARC is not defined to be backward compatible with ARC, although some products support both. Check the specifications of both the TV and soundbar or receiver before relying on a mixed ARC/eARC setup.

Does eARC require a special HDMI cable?
Not necessarily a new or highest-tier cable. HDMI Licensing Administrator’s eARC overview says eARC may work with Standard HDMI Cable with Ethernet and High Speed HDMI Cable with Ethernet, and describes Ultra HDMI cables as designed to support eARC. Its cable guidance lists Ethernet-labeled categories that support ARC/eARC.
Choose a cable category that meets the requirements in both devices’ documentation and the video capabilities of the whole system. When shopping, “HDMI cable with Ethernet” is a useful category to check, but the manuals—not a blanket claim that every setup needs an expensive cable—should guide the choice.

Before replacing a soundbar
A soundbar that is connected to the wrong HDMI socket may not receive TV audio through the intended return path. Before considering replacement, check the port markings at both ends, the soundbar’s designated TV connection, and the ARC/eARC support and setup instructions for both devices. Without the specific models, compatibility and menu settings cannot be determined universally.
