Yes—you can use an HDMI monitor and a DisplayPort monitor together, as long as your computer’s graphics hardware supports both displays at the resolutions and refresh rates you want. Connect each monitor to a compatible output, use a correctly directed adapter only if the ports do not match, then choose extended or duplicated display mode.
What determines whether the combination will work?
The monitor connectors are only one part of the setup. The computer’s graphics hardware must support the number of displays and the requested display modes at the same time. Supported combinations and limits vary by graphics product and computer, so check the exact GPU, processor, or computer specifications rather than assuming that any two available-looking ports can be used concurrently. Intel documents mixed connector combinations for supported configurations, while NVIDIA’s setup guidance calls for connecting displays to suitable graphics-card connectors. - Available outputs: Check the computer or graphics card, not just the inputs on the monitors.
- Concurrent display support: Confirm the graphics system can drive both chosen outputs at once.
- Target modes: Verify resolution and refresh rate for each display, including any adapter or dock in the signal path.
How to connect the monitors
- Identify the computer’s video outputs. Check the graphics card or computer specifications and confirm the outputs are supported concurrently.
- Connect matching ports directly. If the computer has HDMI and DisplayPort outputs, connect the HDMI monitor to HDMI and the DisplayPort monitor to DisplayPort with suitable cables.
- Use an adapter only when needed. Match the adapter’s direction to the signal path—for example, DisplayPort output on the computer to HDMI input on the monitor. Confirm the source and adapter support the resolution and refresh rate you need.
- Turn on the displays and select their inputs. Make sure each monitor is powered on and set to the input connected to the computer.
- Choose how the screens behave. Select extended desktop or duplication in the operating system or graphics settings.
When do you need an adapter?
If the computer’s output and the monitor’s input differ, an adapter or conversion cable may bridge them. Direction matters: a DisplayPort-to-HDMI product is intended to carry a signal from a DisplayPort source to an HDMI display; a product designed for HDMI output to DisplayPort input should not be assumed to work in reverse.
Some DisplayPort sources support Dual-Mode DisplayPort, which can switch to HDMI signaling through a compatible adapter. The source and adapter type affect which HDMI modes are available; the port shape alone does not establish support for a particular resolution or refresh rate. For a USB-C connection, check the specifications of that particular port to confirm it supports video over DisplayPort Alt Mode or Thunderbolt before choosing an adapter or dock.
What display mode should you choose?
- Extended desktop: Each monitor provides its own desktop area, so you can place separate windows on each screen. AMD describes extended displays as having their own desktop area, resolution, and refresh rate. AMD: Configure displays in duplicated and extended modes.
- Duplicated display: Both monitors show the same content. The screens may need to use a mode supported by both displays and the graphics hardware.
When is an MST hub or daisy-chain useful?
DisplayPort Multi-Stream Transport (MST) can carry multiple display streams through a compatible hub or a supported monitor daisy-chain. This can help when a compatible system needs to feed multiple displays through one DisplayPort connection. Both the source system and the chosen hub or display topology must support MST; it is not a general workaround for graphics hardware that lacks the required display support. Why resolution and refresh rate can vary
The usable mode is limited by the components in the full signal path: graphics hardware, port implementation, cable, adapter or hub, and monitor. Shared bandwidth and support for features such as color depth, HDR, and audio can also matter. Check each product’s specifications for the exact combination you intend to use.

If one monitor is not detected
- Check that the monitor is powered on and set to the correct input.
- Reseat the cable and verify that the adapter, if present, is connected in the intended direction.
- Check display settings or the graphics control panel to select and configure the monitor.
- Confirm that the graphics hardware supports the connected displays and their requested modes.
