Probably not. An HDMI 2.2 cable is useful when the source, display and every device in between support HDMI 2.2 formats that need its higher bandwidth. For setups that require up to 48 Gbps, HDMI Licensing Administrator (HDMI LA) says a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable is the relevant option. A faster cable cannot add HDMI 2.2 support to an older TV, monitor, graphics card, console, receiver or soundbar.
What HDMI 2.2 changes
The HDMI Forum released HDMI Specification Version 2.2 on June 25, 2025. It supports data rates up to 96 Gbps using next-generation Fixed Rate Link technology. That ceiling enables specification-level formats including uncompressed 8K at 60 Hz and 4K at 240 Hz with full 4:4:4 chroma and 10- or 12-bit color, as well as resolutions up to 12K at 120 Hz and 16K at 60 Hz. These are capabilities of the specification, not a guarantee that any particular device supports them. The HDMI Forum’s HDMI 2.2 overview describes the release and its headline capabilities.

Bandwidth is not a picture-quality rating on its own. Resolution, refresh rate, chroma sampling and color depth all contribute to the data rate. HDMI LA notes that combining high resolution, fast refresh, HDR and full 4:4:4 chroma raises bandwidth demand; when a link cannot carry the desired signal, a system may need to reduce refresh rate or color detail. HDMI LA also says 10-bit color carries approximately 25% more data per pixel than 8-bit color. Its bandwidth guidance explains these trade-offs.
What an Ultra96 HDMI cable is
Ultra96 is the cable designation for HDMI 2.2 applications, covering cables that support up to 96 Gbps. The cables can be used with existing HDMI devices, but they do not remove those devices’ own limits. HDMI LA says a device displaying the Ultra96 feature name requires an Ultra96 cable to support its maximum bandwidth. The HDMI Forum’s HDMI 2.2 information and HDMI LA’s cable guidance describe the designation.

One important detail: Ultra96 on a device does not necessarily mean its port reaches 96 Gbps. HDMI LA says the feature name can indicate a maximum of 64, 80 or 96 Gbps, so check the device’s technical specifications rather than inferring the precise rate from the label. HDMI LA’s Ultra96 guidance explains this distinction.
Ultra High Speed vs. Ultra96
| Cable type | Bandwidth guidance | When it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Ultra High Speed HDMI | Configurations up to 48 Gbps, according to HDMI LA | Systems whose devices need no more than 48 Gbps, including applicable 8K at 60 Hz and 4K at 120 Hz configurations |
| Ultra96 | Up to 96 Gbps for HDMI 2.2 applications | A setup that needs HDMI 2.2 bandwidth, provided the source, display and any devices between them support the desired mode |
These are cable capabilities, not promises that every combination of devices can use every format. HDMI LA’s Ultra High Speed cable guidance covers its configurations up to 48 Gbps; the HDMI Forum’s HDMI 2.2 overview covers Ultra96.

Do you need an HDMI 2.2 cable?
Buy one only if the mode you want requires HDMI 2.2 bandwidth and your complete device chain supports it. Otherwise, a certified Ultra High Speed cable is the appropriate choice for a setup that needs no more than 48 Gbps. Buying Ultra96 for an older or lower-bandwidth setup will not unlock a higher resolution, refresh rate or color mode that the devices themselves do not support.

Generic “HDMI 2.1” or “HDMI 2.2” wording in a product listing is less informative than the supported bandwidth and certification details. For instance, the Ultra96 feature name alone does not tell you whether a device supports 64, 80 or 96 Gbps.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Will an HDMI 2.2 cable work with an HDMI 2.1 TV?
Ultra96 cables are backward usable with existing HDMI devices, so an older TV can use one within the TV’s capabilities. The cable will not turn the TV’s HDMI port into an HDMI 2.2 port or give it formats it does not support. The same limitation applies if an older receiver, soundbar, console or graphics card is part of the chain.

How to check whether an HDMI cable is certified
Certification applies to the specific cable model and length, not just a product family name. The HDMI Forum says each Ultra96 model length must be tested and certified and display a Certification Label. HDMI LA says the label can be scanned to verify the cable. Its cable guidance explains certification for Ultra High Speed cables as well.

As of September 2026, cable maker Wieson said its 2-meter model AB9856-40113020-00 had completed HDMI Forum Authorized Testing Center certification. That is the manufacturer’s announcement about its own product, not an independent assessment of the cable. Wieson’s announcement is the source for that example.
HDMI 2.2 also adds a feature for audio timing
HDMI 2.2 introduces Latency Indication Protocol (LIP), intended to improve audio-video synchronization, particularly in multi-hop setups that include an AV receiver or soundbar. LIP is separate from cable speed: by itself, it is not a reason to replace a cable that already meets the bandwidth needs of a compatible setup. The HDMI Forum’s HDMI 2.2 overview describes the protocol.
