Nifty Hits 2026 Low as Sell-Off Deepens; All Sectoral Indices End in Red (October 8, 2026)

The Nifty 50 fell 371.25 points, or 1.64%, to close at 22,231.80 on Thursday, October 8, 2026. Its intraday low of 22,179.90 was described by Fortune India as a fresh 2026 and 52-week low. Fortune India also reported that every sectoral index ended lower. The session figures below are Fortune India’s reported numbers. The causes it gives are attributed explanations, and its central policy claim, an RBI rate hike on October 7, is not yet confirmed by the official RBI material available for this report.

The session in numbers

Both benchmarks closed sharply lower. The table uses Fortune India’s reported figures for October 8, 2026.

Index Reported close Change Intraday low Reported 52-week low
Nifty 50 22,231.80 −371.25 points (−1.64%) 22,179.90 Intraday low described as a fresh 52-week low; separate 52-week figure not stated
BSE Sensex 71,593.24 −1,045.46 points (−1.44%) 71,327.75 71,292.88

The two benchmarks did not behave identically. The Nifty’s intraday low was a new 52-week low on the report’s own description. The Sensex’s intraday low of 71,327.75 sat about 35 points above its reported 52-week low of 71,292.88, so the Sensex did not breach that level during the session on these figures. Working backwards from the reported closes and changes, the Nifty closed the prior session near 22,603.05 and the Sensex near 72,638.70. These prior-close levels are derived arithmetic, not separately reported figures.

Breadth: every sector down, smaller stocks lagging

The decline was not confined to heavyweight stocks. Fortune India reported that all sectoral indices closed lower, with metal, realty, oil and gas, auto, healthcare and pharma among the hardest hit. It also reported that mid-cap and small-cap shares underperformed the benchmarks. The report, as available, gives no sector-level percentage moves, so the relative size of each sector’s fall cannot be ranked from it.

Nifty constituents named in the report

Stock Reported move on October 8, 2026
Adani Enterprises −5.36%, the largest decline among Nifty constituents named
JSW Steel −4.46%
ITC −4.03%
Max Healthcare Decline reported; percentage not stated
IndiGo Decline reported; percentage not stated
Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Decline reported; percentage not stated

The named stocks span metals, a consumer staple, healthcare, aviation, autos and an energy-linked conglomerate, which fits the breadth of the sector declines.

What Fortune India says drove the sell-off

Fortune India attributed the decline to three pressures. None is presented in the report as the sole cause, and the report quotes no named official or analyst, so these are the reporter’s explanations rather than confirmed findings.

  1. Rising crude prices. Brent crude rose nearly 5% and was above $104 per barrel at the time of reporting.
  2. Foreign institutional selling. Foreign institutional investors sold ₹6,121.37 crore of Indian equities on Wednesday, October 7, 2026.
  3. Concern over the RBI’s monetary-policy stance. This is the explanation that depends on the disputed rate decision discussed below.

Domestic buying offset part of the foreign selling

Domestic institutional investors bought ₹4,596.57 crore on the same day, according to Fortune India. Taking the two reported figures together, net foreign selling was about ₹1,524.80 crore, and domestic buying covered roughly three-quarters of the gross foreign outflow. Those net and percentage figures are derived from the reported amounts. The report does not state them.

Crude prices

The report gives the Brent move as “nearly 5%” and a level above $104 per barrel at the time of writing. It does not state the Brent close for the session or the exact timestamp, so readers should treat the price as a snapshot from the report’s writing rather than a settled daily figure.

The RBI rate-hike claim: reported, not yet confirmed

Fortune India states that the Reserve Bank of India raised the repo rate by 25 basis points to 5.50% on October 7, 2026, and moved from a neutral stance to “calibrated tightening.” This is the most consequential factual claim in the report, and it is the one the official material available for this report does not confirm.

  • The RBI’s current-rates page shows a 5.25% policy repo rate with a rate observation dated July 15, 2026. That is earlier than October and does not show a later change.
  • The RBI’s official listing for its August 3–5, 2026 Monetary Policy Committee meeting does not establish any decision on October 7.
  • “Calibrated tightening” is the stance wording Fortune India attributes to the RBI. It is not verified against an RBI statement here.

A rate change of this kind would normally appear in an RBI press release dated the day of the decision. Until such a release confirms a 5.50% repo rate, the October hike should be read as Fortune India’s claim. If the claim is wrong, the monetary-policy explanation for the sell-off weakens considerably, and the session would rest more heavily on crude and foreign flows.

What to watch in the next session

  • Whether the Nifty holds above its 22,179.90 intraday low, the level Fortune India described as a 52-week low.
  • Whether the Sensex’s reported 52-week low of 71,292.88 is tested in the coming sessions.
  • An official RBI release for October 7, 2026, that either confirms or contradicts the 25-basis-point hike to 5.50%.
  • Brent crude’s direction, since the report ties the sell-off partly to oil prices above $104.

The session’s core numbers come from a single report and have not been checked against exchange records here, so exchange closing data is the first check for anyone relying on the exact figures.
