Are SSDs more reliable than HDDs?
There is no general reliability winner established by the available comparison. Backblaze’s 2021 analysis compared HDDs and SSDs used as boot drives in the same operational role, workload, and environment. After accounting for average age and drive-days, the observed failure rates were within each other’s 95% confidence intervals. That means the comparison did not establish a meaningful difference between those cohorts; it does not prove every SSD and HDD is equally reliable, or predict results for retail models and home workloads. The comparison is useful for its method, not as a current model-by-model buying guide. Backblaze operates drives in data centers, and its reported experience is not a controlled consumer purchase trial. Its broader dataset describes its deployed fleet and failure definitions, not the expected life of a specific drive in your computer. Backblaze’s drive-statistics methodology
Drive type does affect how a device can be damaged. HDDs contain spinning platters and moving read/write heads operating at tight tolerances, so physical shock is a relevant risk, especially while a drive is operating. SSDs have no moving parts, but that does not make them immune to failure: their controller electronics or flash memory can fail, and they can still be damaged by mishandling or unsuitable operating conditions. What do HDD failure rates tell you?
An annualized failure rate (AFR) summarizes failures across a population over observed drive-days, expressed as a yearly rate. It is not a countdown for an individual drive, nor a promise that a drive has that probability of failing during every future year. Backblaze’s current data is operational field evidence from its own fleet; it should not be treated as a forecast for a particular consumer model or workload. Backblaze’s drive-statistics methodology
Backblaze’s dataset page, current at Q2 2026, reports a 1.73% quarterly annualized failure rate based on 31,553,350 drive-days and 1,498 failures for that period. For 2025, it reports a 1.36% annualized rate based on 115,638,676 drive-days and 4,317 failures; its reported lifetime annualized rate is 1.41%. These figures cover Backblaze’s fleet, not all HDDs or SSDs sold to consumers. Backblaze’s drive-statistics dataset
How long does an HDD or SSD last?
A failure rate and a lifespan estimate answer different questions. A rate summarizes failures in a population over a period; a median lifespan is the age at which half of a defined population has failed. Neither provides a reliable expiration date for your individual drive.

- Always Fast: No slowdowns for large file transfers. With SLC caching (25% of current available capacity allocated as high-speed cache), this external SSD delivers steady 10Gbps for transfers within the cache capacity
In a 2021 analysis, Backblaze estimated a median HDD lifespan of six years and nine months. It extrapolated beyond six years because the remaining fleet data was too limited and concentrated in a few models to support a confident estimate. That historical, fleet-based estimate is not a service-life promise for a consumer drive. Backblaze’s explanation of its lifespan estimate
Real service life varies with the specific device, workload, age, handling, temperature, vibration, and other operating conditions. A drive that has worked for years can still fail without warning; a population average cannot tell you how long yours has left.
Does SSD TBW mean the drive will fail?
No. TBW (terabytes written) is an SSD endurance rating: it describes a specified amount of writing associated with the flash memory’s write-wear rating. It is not the same thing as an annual failure rate or MTBF, which model the likelihood of electrical failure. The endurance rating for a particular SSD is model-specific, so check that manufacturer’s specifications when assessing a write-heavy workload. Western Digital’s technical paper

Reaching an endurance rating does not necessarily make an SSD stop working immediately. Western Digital notes that a drive may continue to operate while read errors rise, but says a drive at its rating should no longer be trusted with important data. Treat endurance as one input to workload suitability, not as a precise failure timer.

Can SMART predict drive failure?
SMART (Self-Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology) exposes reliability indicators reported by a drive. Monitoring can help identify warnings, but it cannot predict every failure or certify that a drive is safe. Attributes and their meanings vary by model and manufacturer. In its 2021 SSD/HDD analysis, Backblaze said its SSD failure sample was limited, several SSD attributes were not understood in its analysis, and the SSD failures it had observed were reactive—the drives stopped working rather than being proactively predicted. Backblaze’s SSD reliability analysis
Take a SMART warning seriously: copy important data to another device and investigate replacement. A healthy SMART report is not a substitute for backups and does not rule out an imminent failure.

How should you choose between an HDD and SSD?
Compare the drives for the job you need them to do. Reliability alone does not settle the choice, and performance does not prove reliability. Backblaze’s matched-cohort analysis points to cost, speed, electricity use, and form factor as relevant decision factors when the observed reliability difference was not statistically established. Backblaze’s comparison
| Decision factor | What to consider |
|---|---|
| Workload | Distinguish a boot drive from frequently rewritten working files, archival storage, or a backup target. Match the drive to the way it will be used. |
| Performance | Consider responsiveness and transfer speed where they matter to your tasks. Faster performance is not evidence of lower failure risk. |
| Write endurance | For an SSD used heavily for writing, check its specific manufacturer endurance rating. Do not confuse TBW with AFR or MTBF. |
| Handling and environment | Account for shock exposure, temperature, vibration, and enclosure or installation conditions. Western Digital identifies shock and temperature as relevant risk factors. |
| Capacity, cost, power, and form factor | Compare these against your workload and budget; no fleet-wide failure statistic can decide which trade-off suits you. |
| Data protection | Plan separate copies, keep them in different places where practical, and verify that files can be restored. A drive is not a backup plan. |
Do not use Backblaze’s aggregate fleet figures to rank consumer brands or choose a particular model. Its data-center population, operating conditions, drive ages, and workloads may differ substantially from yours.
Can you recover data from a failed HDD or SSD?
Sometimes, but recovery is not assured. It depends on the type and extent of physical or logical damage and on what happens after the problem appears. If the files matter, stop using the device rather than trying repeated repairs or recovery attempts. Seagate Recovery Services advises: “Cease using the hard drive or storage device that requires recovery.” Its guidance also says to shut down a device showing unusual noises or obvious distress and not power it on again; do not open an HDD, which is sensitive to contamination and should only be opened in a clean environment. This is manufacturer guidance, not a diagnosis of your particular drive. Seagate’s guidance for when data loss occurs

For irreplaceable files, avoid further troubleshooting and consult a qualified recovery provider. Check eligibility, location, terms, and cost before shipping a device. Seagate’s recovery lookup recognizes Seagate and LaCie serial numbers; its warranty FAQ says required data recovery must happen before an RMA. Recovery and warranty replacement are separate processes, and policies or eligibility can change. Seagate Data Recovery Services · Seagate Warranty and Return FAQs
Seagate describes a process that can include an eligibility lookup, claim submission, shipment to a lab if approved, and return of successfully recovered files on an encrypted external storage device. Its FAQ estimates turnaround at typically 30 days from receipt, but actual time varies with damage, regulations, parts, and shipping; that estimate is not a guarantee of success. How to reduce the risk of losing files
Use a separate, restorable copy instead of relying on a single drive’s expected lifespan. SanDisk puts the distinction plainly: “Moving data from the computer to an external drive IS NOT a backup unless there is a second copy of the file in a different place.” An external drive can be one destination, but a second copy must exist elsewhere, and you should check that your backups can actually be restored. Quick Recap
- Keep important files in more than one copy, with copies separated so one incident does not affect all of them.
- Restore a sample of backed-up files periodically to verify that the copies are usable.
- Watch for drive warnings and unusual behavior, but do not wait for a warning before backing up.
- If a drive fails and the data is valuable, stop using it and seek appropriate recovery advice rather than treating recovery as certain.
