HBM vs. GDDR Memory: Which Is Better for AI GPUs?

HBM is common in high-bandwidth AI accelerators, but GDDR can serve inference workloads. Compare exact GPU capacity, bandwidth, and workload performance.

Neither HBM nor GDDR is universally better for AI GPUs. HBM is a common choice for accelerators designed around high memory bandwidth and close integration with the processor package. GDDR can also support AI inference. The right comparison is between specific GPU models running your workload—not between memory labels alone.

What HBM and GDDR mean in a GPU

HBM, or high-bandwidth memory, uses stacked memory dies placed close to the GPU. NVIDIA’s 2017 Volta architecture paper describes HBM2 stacks on the same physical package as the GPU and says that, in that design, this arrangement saved power and area compared with traditional GDDR5 designs. That is historical evidence about HBM2 and GDDR5, not a universal measurement of current HBM and GDDR products.

GDDR is graphics memory connected to a GPU through a memory interface. Its bandwidth depends on the memory data rate as well as the width and configuration of that interface. Neither name alone tells you the performance of a complete GPU.

Compare specific GPU specifications

NVIDIA’s current HGX component specifications list these per-GPU figures for the following SXM models:

  • Professional Intel Arc Pro B70 GPU: Built on the Intel Xe2-HPG architecture, it features 32 Xe cores and 256 XMX engines, designed to accelerate AI, rendering, and complex visualization workloads.
  • Massive 32GB GDDR6 VRAM: Equipped with 32GB of high-speed GDDR6 memory on a 256-bit bus, running at 19 Gbps, which allows for handling large AI models and complex datasets locally.
  • High-Performance Engine Clock: Delivers an engine clock of 2540 MHz, providing the compute power needed for demanding professional applications and AI inference.
GPU Memory Published memory bandwidth
H100 SXM 80 GB HBM3 3.35 TB/s
H200 SXM 141 GB HBM3e 4.8 TB/s
B200 SXM 180 GB HBM3e Up to 8 TB/s

These are platform-specific published specifications from NVIDIA’s HGX component documentation. They show that both capacity and bandwidth vary by GPU model and memory generation; they do not establish a general performance ratio between HBM and GDDR. NVIDIA’s 2025 Blackwell Ultra technical blog separately reports up to 288 GB of HBM3E and up to 8 TB/s per GPU. Those figures apply to Blackwell Ultra, not to every HBM-equipped GPU.

Why a bandwidth number needs context

A peak bandwidth figure is tied to a particular memory configuration. In a 2019 GTC presentation, Micron gives example bandwidths of 1,024 GB/s for an HBM2 configuration, 768 GB/s for a 384-bit GDDR6 configuration, and 448 GB/s for a 256-bit GDDR6 configuration. These are dated examples with different configurations, not current-generation ceilings or a controlled, like-for-like benchmark.

  • Multi-Precision Computing — Supports FP64 (7 TFLOPS), FP32 (14 TFLOPS), FP16 (112 TFLOPS) and INT8 precision modes for flexible deployment across training, inference, and scientific simulation workloads

Bandwidth is also not the same as capacity. Capacity determines how much model data, working data, and inference state can reside in memory. Bandwidth concerns how quickly data can move. NVIDIA’s GPU performance guide describes execution as a hierarchy in which data is accessed from DRAM through L2 cache. As a result, peak external-memory bandwidth by itself does not predict every application’s speed.

Can GDDR be used for AI?

Yes. Micron positions GDDR7 for graphics and AI inference workloads. That establishes inference as a use case for GDDR7; it does not show that any particular GDDR GPU will match an HBM accelerator on a given model or workload.

  • Professional AI & Creator Workstation: AMD Radeon AI PRO R9700 GPU with 32GB GDDR6 is engineered for AI development, professional content creation, and compute-intensive workloads.
  • Massive 32GB Memory Capacity: 32GB of GDDR6 memory on a 256-bit bus provides ample bandwidth for large AI models, 8K video editing, and complex 3D rendering.

  • Enterprise-Grade Thermal Solution: Vapor chamber heatsink with industrial Honeywell PTM7950 thermal interface material ensures reliable cooling under sustained professional loads.

GDDR7 also is not a drop-in upgrade for a GDDR6 or GDDR6X GPU. Micron says GDDR7 uses PAM3 signaling and requires new memory controllers, making it incompatible with those earlier memory generations without a compatible GPU design.

How to choose for an AI workload

  1. Check capacity against the workload. Estimate whether the model weights, working data, and relevant inference state fit in the GPU’s memory without offloading. A larger capacity may matter more than a higher bandwidth figure if data otherwise cannot remain resident.
  2. Compare published bandwidth for the exact GPU. Check the model and system configuration, then treat peak bandwidth as a specification—not a promise of application performance.
  3. Identify the workload bottleneck. Workloads sensitive to moving data may benefit from high memory bandwidth; others may be limited elsewhere in the GPU execution hierarchy. Use measurements for the target workload where available rather than inferring speed from the memory type.
  4. Account for system design. Package integration, board layout, power, cooling, and the rest of the system affect what can be deployed. NVIDIA’s Volta paper provides historical context for HBM2 packaging, but it is not a substitute for documentation on a current implementation.
  5. Check deployment economics and availability. These can determine the practical choice, but the cited specifications do not establish a current price or supply advantage for either memory type.

Bottom line for AI GPU buyers

HBM is commonly chosen for high-bandwidth AI accelerator designs, while GDDR remains a possible fit for other GPU designs and AI inference. Choose by the exact GPU’s capacity, bandwidth, system constraints, and performance on your workload; the memory label alone is not a verdict.
