Short answer: A DIY Pip-Boy can display a custom interface, maps, audio, or other functions its builder adds, but it is not automatically a phone or GPS navigator. Whether it works as an everyday wearable depends on the finished enclosure, power, controls, comfort, and durability—not just the electronics.
What a DIY Pip-Boy can actually do
“Functional” describes the features implemented in a particular build; it does not mean that the device reproduces every function of the fictional Pip-Boy. Published projects show a range of possibilities:

- Raspberry Pi Model B+ build: Adafruit’s Pip-Boy 3000 guide describes a 3.5-inch PiTFT display running a custom Python interface, OpenStreetMap terrain data, audio through a speaker and amplifier, rotary controls, Wi-Fi peripheral support, and a rechargeable 2200mAh battery. The guide presents it as a functional cosplay prop; it does not establish calling or live navigation.
- Scrap-built Raspberry Pi project: Raspberry Pi Official Magazine’s Pip-Boy build lists a 3.5-inch display, KY040 rotary encoder, three LEDs, two push-buttons, a power bank, and wiring.
- Raspberry Pi Zero W project: Raspberry Pi’s 2020 coverage describes a display connected through GPIO and a Python interface with demo screens. It characterizes this as a project that is not beginner-level.
- ESP32 project: The maker-described DIY Pip-Boy 3000 Mark IV includes a clock, temperature and humidity readings, internet radio presets, and MP3 support. Its animated radiation meter is an animation, not evidence of radiation measurement.
These examples are different projects, not interchangeable specifications. Choose a board and peripherals to suit the features and software you plan to build.
Can a DIY Pip-Boy be used as a phone?
A phone can run a Pip-Boy-style simulator in its browser. Pip-Boy.com’s FAQ says its simulators run in mobile browsers and that the core pages and simulators in its progressive web app work offline after installation. The site identifies itself as an unofficial fan project, not affiliated with or endorsed by Bethesda Softworks, ZeniMax, or The Wand Company.

That is phone software styled like a Pip-Boy—not proof that a separate DIY enclosure can place calls or send texts. The documented builds above do not verify cellular calling or texting from the wearable itself. A screen, Wi-Fi support, or a phone simulator alone does not make a prop a phone replacement.
Can it show maps or provide GPS navigation?
Maps and GPS are separate capabilities. Adafruit’s Raspberry Pi guide documents displaying OpenStreetMap data, so a build can show map information. The guide does not establish an onboard GPS receiver, live position tracking, or turn-by-turn directions.

Live positioning would be an additional design goal: it needs a compatible location source, software integration, and testing. Do not treat a map on the screen as proof that the device knows where it is or can guide you to a destination.

It may be wearable, but a costume prop is not automatically practical for daily use. Assess the completed device rather than assuming that a successful demonstration establishes comfort or durability. Check:

- Fit and movement: size, mass, attachment security, visibility, and whether buttons or rotary controls are usable without restricting your hand.
- Power and heat: battery runtime in your actual use, charging arrangements, and whether the device becomes uncomfortable during wear.
- Protection: weather resistance and the risk of damaging exposed components or catching the enclosure on nearby objects.
Raspberry Pi Official Magazine recommends prototyping parts in cardboard or paper, getting the computer and custom software running before fitting them into the case, and testing while assembling. Its practical advice is to try wearing the finished item during an ordinary day before taking it to an event; that trial can reveal problems that a bench test will not.

Start with the intended use, then select parts that support it. An Adafruit-style Raspberry Pi build needs more than the board: its design includes a compatible small display, power and battery components, controls, audio parts, wiring, and an enclosure. A scrap-built approach can use materials such as pipe, plastic, and foam, with a display, buttons, LEDs, and a power bank. Exact parts depend on the board and design, so check compatibility before assembling a shopping list.

- Choose the primary use. Decide whether you want a cosplay interface, map display, media player, or phone-based simulator. Treat live GPS or cellular service as separate requirements.
- Prototype the interface and electronics. Build and test the computer, display, and software before committing to a fitted enclosure. Mock up the shape in cardboard or paper to check scale and reach.
- Assemble and test in stages. Add controls, power, and other features incrementally, testing each while the case is still accessible.
- Trial the finished wearable. Wear it during ordinary activities to evaluate movement, comfort, controls, power, and the risk of damage before relying on it at an event or in daily use.
