There is no representative UK fitter survey showing that kitchen fitters have stopped using peel-and-stick splashbacks. Self-adhesive products are still documented by suppliers, although trade-facing advice has raised concerns about some decorative stick-on tiles. More permanent alternatives include ceramic or porcelain tile, toughened glass, stainless steel, and laminate or other wall panels; each has different heat, fitting, and maintenance requirements.
Have kitchen fitters stopped using peel-and-stick splashbacks?
That broad trend is unverified. The available UK sources document both self-adhesive splashback products and more permanent materials, but do not establish how frequently fitters choose each option. It is more accurate to say that peel-and-stick decorative tiles have raised durability concerns, not that the trade has abandoned them.

There is also an important distinction between decorative peel-and-stick tiles and supplier-made self-adhesive glass or metal panels. They are different products, with different materials and installation instructions; advice about one should not automatically be applied to the other.

In a 2022 PropertyWire article, Patrick Garner, identified as resident handyman at Heatable.co.uk, argued that water could get behind stick-on tiles and cause bubbling and loss of adhesion. That is his expert opinion, not a controlled comparative test or proof that every product fails. Check the maker’s stated use, surface requirements, and exposure limits for the particular product.

What are the more permanent alternatives?
The right choice depends on the hob and appliance instructions, wall condition, dimensions and cut-outs, fixing method, finish, and how much joint maintenance you are willing to do. No option is established as the universal best choice, and the sources do not provide a reliable like-for-like ranking of lifespan or installed cost.
| Material | What it offers | Check before choosing |
|---|---|---|
| Ceramic or porcelain tile | A tiled finish can accommodate patterns and varied wall shapes. | Wall preparation, tile layout, installation time, and cleaning of grout joints; individual tiles may be repairable, but repair details depend on the installation. |
| Toughened glass | A sheet finish with supplier-documented sizes and fixing systems. | Exact measurements and cut-outs, surface flatness, heat suitability, fixing, and sealing. One supplier says its toughened panels cannot be cut or drilled after manufacture. |
| Stainless steel | A sheet-metal finish; suppliers document both screw and adhesive fixing methods. | Hob suitability and clearance, dimensions, fixing method, finish, and cleaning instructions for the chosen product. |
| Laminate panel | A panel option listed by Formica UK, which provides its own installation and maintenance guide. | Manufacturer-specific location and heat suitability, panel dimensions, edge treatment, and cleaning requirements. |
| Acrylic or composite panel | An installer lists these among available wall-panel options. | Heat restrictions, clearance, panel size, fixing, and the manufacturer’s suitability guidance for the hob location. |
How should heat and hob clearances be checked?
Use the appliance installation manual together with the selected splashback maker’s instructions. Clearance figures are product-specific, not universal rules. For example, one supplier specifies at least 110 mm from the nearest heat source for its splashbacks, while another says its glass can be used behind a gas hob with 80 mm clearance from the hob edge. Those figures apply to those suppliers’ products and guidance only; they should not be transferred to another panel or appliance.
Rank #2
- 2-3 Times Thickness: Much thicker than ordinary peel & stick tile, 2mm-2.5mm each, durable and solid tile, unlike soft sticker tiles
- Stronger Upgrade Adhesive: 3X Stronger backing glue than ordinary vinyl backsplash tile, not only stick firmly to the smooth surface, but also available on lightly textured wall
- 1.4 Times Coverage Area: 10 sheets thickened self-adhesive tiles, 12" X 12" each, which covers 40% more area than 10"x10" tile
- Widely Use: Perfectly decorated in kitchen island walls, bathroom backsplash, shower, fireplace, and installed behind the stove
- Easy Do It Yourself: Just peel, interlock and stick. No need to overlap, no grout and no mess, save your time and money on labor
An installer also cautions that suitability varies behind different hob types. If the panel maker or appliance manual does not clearly confirm that the proposed material and position are suitable, ask the manufacturer or a qualified installer before ordering or fitting.

- Confirm the product and location. Check the manufacturer’s stated suitability for the hob and the relevant heat exposure before selecting a finish.
- Measure the finished area and every cut-out. Record sockets, switches, taps, and other obstructions. Glass that is toughened during manufacture may not be cut or drilled afterward, so mistakes in measurement can make a panel unusable.
- Check the wall and fixing system. Some supplier instructions require a flat, non-porous, dry, dust-free surface. Adhesive-backed products may be difficult or impossible to reposition once applied.
- Follow edge and joint instructions. Some self-adhesive panel instructions call for sealing edges. For tile, factor in grout joints and their cleaning and maintenance.
- Compare the full installation, not just the material. Include preparation, cut-outs, fixing, edge treatment, and future maintenance. The available sources do not establish comparable UK installed prices, so obtain local quotes for the actual wall and product.
Which splashback should you choose?
- Choose tile if you want a jointed, patterned finish or need a material that can suit varied wall shapes, and you are comfortable maintaining grout.
- Consider glass or stainless steel if you want a sheet finish and the exact product’s heat guidance, measurements, cut-outs, and fixing method suit the appliance and wall.
- Consider laminate, acrylic, or composite panels if the maker specifically permits the intended location and provides clear installation and maintenance instructions.
- Consider a peel-and-stick product only if its maker specifies that it is suitable for the surface and exposure involved, and you accept the limits of its fixing and durability evidence.
There is no dependable evidence here for what fitters choose most often, a guaranteed lifespan for any material, or a universal cost winner. Choose against the product instructions and the conditions in your kitchen rather than a supposed trade-wide switch.
