For Meta Conversions API events, hash customer fields only when the field contract calls for it. The cited Pixellint rulepack identifies email and phone as normalized, SHA-256-hashed customer information, while client_ip_address and client_user_agent are sent in plaintext. A generic helper that hashes every string can therefore produce a request that appears successful but contains values in the wrong form. The topic article reports that these mistakes can still receive HTTP 200; that status alone does not establish that an event matched a person or was attributed as intended.
Why a 200 response does not prove matching worked
HTTP status answers whether the request received a successful response; it does not, by itself, show that every field was normalized correctly or that Meta matched the event to a person. Aleksander Sekowski, the topic article’s author and Pixellint maintainer, describes this failure mode: an incorrectly transformed field can survive a 200 response. Treat that point as the article’s reported behavior, not as a freshly verified quotation from Meta’s documentation, which was inaccessible when this guidance was assembled.

The practical question is not just “Did the request succeed?” but “Does each value have the representation expected for this specific field?” A SHA-256 digest can be syntactically plausible yet semantically wrong in a field meant to carry an IP address or user-agent.
Which Meta CAPI fields should be hashed?
Hashing is field-specific. Pixellint’s Meta CAPI validator rulepack distinguishes customer information from request metadata. The rulepack says that client_ip_address and client_user_agent are sent in the clear; its guidance identifies email and phone among the customer values that are normalized and hashed. Confirm the current field contract and any exceptions in Meta’s customer information parameters documentation before changing a production integration.

| Field or value | Handling described in the cited guidance | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Trim and lowercase, then SHA-256 hash. | The hashed field contains the digest of the normalized address, not the raw address. | |
| Phone | Normalize to digits, including a country code, then hash. | Formatting characters and local-only numbers are handled according to the receiving API’s current requirements. |
client_ip_address |
Send in plaintext; do not hash. | The value remains an IP address rather than a digest. |
client_user_agent |
Send in plaintext; do not hash. | The value remains the browser user-agent string rather than a digest. |
These field distinctions are described in Pixellint’s Meta Conversions API validator rulepack, a vendor’s own documentation rather than an independent Meta authority. Meta’s documentation is the place to verify current requirements.
Normalize email before hashing
For email, the cited guidance is to trim whitespace and lowercase the address before applying SHA-256. Order matters: normalization changes the input text, and changing the input changes its digest. Hashing first and normalizing afterward cannot produce the digest of the normalized address.

Keep the normalization and hashing steps explicit in code, and test the resulting digest against a known fixture. Do not extend email handling to every string merely because the helper accepts strings.

Why a generic “hash every string” helper fails
A recursive payload transformation may make every string look protected while corrupting fields that must stay readable in their documented form. Sekowski writes, “A model that ‘hashes PII before send’ will hash the IP unless something checks the field list.” The key safeguard is an explicit, per-vendor and per-field allowlist—not a rule based only on a value’s data type or a broad label such as “PII.”

For the Meta example, keep designated customer information such as email and phone on the hashing path, while preserving client_ip_address and client_user_agent as plaintext. Do not assume another advertising platform uses the same allowlist or normalization rules. The topic article discusses differences among Meta, Google Ads, TikTok, Snap, Pinterest, and Reddit; each integration needs its own field contract. Browser/server event identifiers used for deduplication also need to be checked against the receiving platform’s current rules rather than transformed by a generic hashing pass.
How to validate a payload before sending it
- Map fields to their documented handling. For each destination platform, record which fields must be normalized and hashed, which stay plaintext, and which identifiers must remain unaltered. Verify the map against that platform’s current documentation.
- Build a fixture with representative values. Include a test email, phone, IP address, user-agent, and platform cookie. Check cookies against the receiving vendor’s documentation; the cited Meta distinction here specifically concerns client IP and user-agent.
- Assert each field independently. Confirm that email and phone have the required normalized, hashed forms, and that IP and user-agent retain their documented plaintext forms. Do not use the mere presence of a 64-character hexadecimal string as proof of correctness.
- Check the payload’s meaning as well as its response. Inspect the field names and values that were actually sent. A response code cannot reveal, on its own, whether a digest was placed in a plaintext field or whether a customer value was left unhashed.
Pixellint’s validator rulepack documents checks for raw email in a field expected to be hashed and for a hash-like value in a field documented as plaintext. It is one independent validation option, not a Meta product or an authoritative replacement for Meta’s current documentation.

Debugging poor event matching
If a CAPI request returns 200 but matching appears poor, inspect the semantic field mapping before changing unrelated parts of the integration. Check whether email was trimmed and lowercased before hashing, whether phone normalization includes the country code, and whether the IP and user-agent were accidentally passed through the same hashing function as customer fields. Then verify that browser and server event identifiers are aligned for deduplication under the platform’s rules.
