Has your life ever been changed by someone you met in an MMO? Tell us who they were to you, what first brought you together in the game, and what changed. It might have been a friendship, romance, mentorship, practical help, creative collaboration, or simply someone who made a difficult time easier. The connection did not have to leave the game to matter.
What happened between you?
Start with the moment or routine that brought you together. Was it a guild, a raid group, a shared quest, trading, role-play, or a chance conversation? What did the person do or say that stayed with you?
Then tell us what the relationship meant beyond that first encounter. Did you find belonging, emotional support, practical help, encouragement, or an opportunity you would not otherwise have had? Did you build something together, or did they help you see yourself differently?
Did the relationship move beyond the game?
Some MMO friendships continue through messages, voice chat, or meeting in person; others remain entirely in-game. Both can be meaningful. If you want, say whether you stayed in touch, met offline, lost contact, or still play together—and whether that changed what the relationship meant to you.

Why these connections matter to players
Research offers context, though it cannot answer whether an MMO changed your life. A 2007 survey of 912 self-selected MMORPG players from 45 countries reported strong friendships and emotional relationships, including lifelong friends and partners. Because participants were self-selected, the study does not tell us how common these experiences are among all MMO players. Cole and Griffiths, 2007.

In a 2009 online survey of 206 World of Warcraft players, respondents reported receiving social support through play. The association between in-game support and fewer negative symptoms did not remain after the researchers accounted for offline support, so the result should not be read as evidence that playing caused better mental health. Longman, O’Connor, and Obst, 2009.
That study also found that a small subgroup of 21 players reporting 44 to 82 hours of play per week (mean: 63.33 hours) had lower offline social support and more negative symptoms than the rest of the sample. This describes one subgroup in one survey; it is not a diagnosis or proof that frequent play harms every player.

A 2022 peer-reviewed conference study analyzed an online survey of 402 World of Warcraft community members recruited through WoW-specific Discord and Reddit communities in March 2021. Participants described valued relationships, a sense of purpose, and relief from negative feelings during the COVID-19 pandemic. The study reflects that particular game, community-recruited sample, and period, rather than MMO players as a whole. Grinyer and colleagues, 2022.
Together, these studies show that players have reported meaningful relationships and support in MMOs. They do not measure how many people consider a meeting life-changing, establish that games caused those changes, or determine what a particular relationship meant to an individual.
