At the same time, Google says site owners do not need an llms.txt file, special AI markup, tiny content chunks, or a separate writing style to appear in its generative search features. The evidence varies by platform, sample, and measurement, so these seven myths are best judged individually—not as one verdict on AI search.
1. “AI search has wiped out all organic traffic”
That claim is broader than the available evidence. In an August 6, 2025 post, Google Search chief Liz Reid said, “Overall, total organic click volume from Google Search to websites has been relatively stable year-over-year.” Google also said traffic was shifting among sites, with some seeing decreases and others increases. This is a first-party statement, not an independent audit; the post did not provide detailed underlying data or methodology. Google’s August 2025 statement
A separate Pew Research Center study measured what people did during sampled Google visits in the United States, not total traffic across the web. It found a difference in click behavior when AI summaries appeared, described below. That observation can coexist with Google’s aggregate claim: the sources use different populations, units, and methods. Neither establishes a universal traffic outcome for every site.
2. “People click regular results at the same rate when an AI summary appears”
Pew’s browsing data did not show equal click rates. Among tracked Google search visits in March 2025, a traditional result was clicked in 8% of visits where an AI summary appeared, compared with 15% of visits without one. A link inside the AI summary was clicked in 1% of visits with a summary. These are observed actions per search visit, not a sitewide click-through rate or a count of all lost clicks.

The study included 900 U.S. adults who shared browsing data and 68,879 unique Google searches from March 2025. Pew collected the result pages from April 7–17, 2025. The results describe that sample and period; Google result pages and AI summaries can change, and the study covers Google rather than every AI search product. 3. “AI Overviews only answer from training data”
Google describes AI Overviews as using a customized language model integrated with its core web ranking systems. Its account says the feature is designed to identify relevant, high-quality results from Google’s index. That is Google’s description of how the system is designed, not an independent audit of every answer or a guarantee that every response uses the same sources. Google’s explanation of AI Overviews

4. “AI Overviews are always accurate”
Google acknowledged that some “odd, inaccurate or unhelpful” AI Overviews appeared during the feature’s early rollout. In its May 30, 2024 account, the company described more than a dozen technical improvements, including better detection of nonsensical queries and limits on misleading user-generated content.
That admission establishes that errors occurred, but Google’s post did not provide a comprehensive, independent error rate. Viral examples cannot establish how often errors occur across all queries, and the 2024 account does not show the current rate. Google’s May 2024 account and changes

5. “You need llms.txt or special AI markup to appear in Google AI results”
Google Search Central’s guidance is direct: “You don’t need to create new machine readable files, AI text files, markup, or Markdown to appear in Google Search (including its generative AI capabilities).” Google says it does not use llms.txt or other special AI text files or markup for visibility, and that these do not affect visibility or rankings in Google Search. It also says no special schema.org markup is required for generative AI search.
This guidance is specific to Google Search; it does not establish what other search engines or AI services use. Ordinary structured data may still help a page qualify for standard rich results, which is a separate purpose from special AI markup. Google Search Central’s guide to generative AI features

6. “You must split every page into tiny chunks for AI”
Google says there is no requirement to break content into tiny pieces for AI understanding and no ideal page length. Its guidance is to choose a length that suits the subject and audience. Organize a page so readers can follow it—using clear headings and focused sections where useful—but there is no universal chunk size to meet for Google’s generative search features. Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.7. “You must rewrite pages in a special AI style or stuff them with long-tail variants”
Google says site owners do not need to write in a specific way for generative AI search, and that its systems can understand synonyms and general meanings. The guidance does not call for including every wording variation. Instead, it points to foundational SEO, a clear technical structure, unique and valuable content, and people-first expertise.

That is not proof that every well-written page will be surfaced or cited. It is a statement about Google’s requirements and recommendations, not a promise of visibility. Google also cautions that third-party tools cannot access its internal ranking or AI systems, so treat their optimization advice as a proposal to check against official guidance rather than privileged knowledge of Google’s systems. What other AI-search evidence can—and cannot—tell you
Studies beyond Google’s own guidance illustrate why percentages from different sources should not be combined into a single “AI search” rate. They examine different systems, samples, and outcomes:
| Evidence | What it measured | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Social Science Research Council working paper, June 2025 | About 14,000 real-world LMArena conversation logs. In that sample, the paper estimated that 34% of Google Gemini responses and 24% of OpenAI GPT-4o responses were generated without explicitly fetching online content; it reported no clickable citation source in 92% of Gemini answers. | These are estimates for the sampled conversations and named systems, not universal rates for all user sessions or products today. The working paper |
| Seer Interactive, September 2025 update, published November 4, 2025 | A client-query analysis covering 3,119 search terms across 42 client organizations, with 25.1 million organic impressions and 1.1 million paid impressions. For Q3 2025, reported organic click-through rate was 0.52% for queries with a Google AI Overview where the brand was not cited, and 0.70% where it was cited. | The study covered selected informational and educational searches. It is observational: the authors cautioned that citation cannot be shown to cause the CTR difference, since stronger brands might be more likely to be cited and have higher baseline CTR. Seer Interactive’s analysis |
The LMArena paper concerns citation behavior in sampled search-enabled LLM conversations; the Seer analysis concerns organic CTR among selected Google queries and client organizations. Neither should be treated as a direct extension of Pew’s U.S. browsing panel or as a measurement of all websites’ traffic.
Quick Recap
What site owners should take from the evidence
- For Google, follow its published guidance rather than adding special AI files or markup, shrinking every page into tiny chunks, or rewriting prose to satisfy an imagined AI format.
- Keep measuring your own search performance. Google recommends Search Console; compare periods and query groups carefully rather than assuming that an overall platform statistic describes your site.
- Interpret visibility and traffic measures separately. A citation, an impression, a click on a summary link, a traditional-result click, and total site traffic are different outcomes.
- When evaluating claims about AI-search impact, check the platform, geography, observation period, population, unit measured, sample selection, and whether the source is a company statement, independent study, or client-panel analysis.
