Hardware vs. Software Video Encoders for Live Streaming: Which Should You Use?

Hardware encoding can free CPU capacity, while x264 can suit systems with spare processing power. The right choice depends on your encoder generation, content, settings, and streaming platform.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

For most single-PC streamers, start with a supported hardware encoder already in the computer: it moves encoding work off the CPU and can leave more headroom for a game and other applications. Use software encoding when your CPU has room and its image-quality and performance trade-off suits your content. Neither option always looks better; the result depends on encoder generation, codec, bitrate, settings, and system load.

What hardware and software encoding mean

Encoding turns your video into a compressed stream that a platform can deliver to viewers. In OBS, software encoding commonly means x264 running on the CPU. Hardware encoding uses a specialized video-encoding unit, often integrated into a GPU or graphics platform; OBS supports families including NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF, Intel Quick Sync Video (QSV), and Apple VideoToolbox. You still select and configure a hardware encoder in software such as OBS. It does not mean you need a separate broadcast box.

A dedicated encoder appliance is a different category: purpose-built broadcast hardware used in some professional workflows. It should not be confused with the encoder built into a computer’s GPU.

How the trade-offs compare

Decision factor Hardware encoding Software encoding
Where the work runs A specialized video-encoding unit, commonly within the GPU. The CPU, using an encoder such as x264 in OBS.
System resources OBS says hardware encoding takes work off the CPU and can have minimal impact on system performance. A game can still compete for GPU resources, so test the actual setup. Uses CPU capacity that could otherwise serve a game or other applications. A capable CPU and suitable settings can make this a valid choice.
Image quality Newer hardware encoders can provide very good quality. OBS cautions that earlier generations may look worse than x264 at the same bitrate and its default veryfast preset. Depends on x264 preset, CPU time available, bitrate, content, and settings; it is not automatically better.
Compatibility Depends on the exact encoder, GPU, operating system, drivers, OBS version, codec, and destination. Depends on having enough CPU capacity and a supported software-encoder configuration.
Useful next step Check which encoder your system exposes, then test a representative stream before considering an upgrade. Check CPU headroom and test the resolution, frame rate, and content you plan to stream.

These are conditional decision criteria, not the results of a controlled head-to-head test of current hardware. OBS’s hardware-encoding guide, dated January 11, 2022, recommends hardware encoding for performance, while noting that generation affects quality. Treat its compatibility notes as a starting point and verify support for your specific equipment and software. OBS Project: Hardware Encoding

Choose based on your computer and stream

Start with hardware encoding if your system supports it

In OBS, check the encoder choices in your output settings. If a supported hardware encoder is available, it is a sensible first option—particularly when a game or other demanding application is already using CPU resources. Monitor GPU load as well: offloading the encode from the CPU does not prevent a game from competing for GPU resources.

Consider x264 when your CPU has room

Software encoding can suit a computer with spare CPU capacity, or a setup where you want to test how x264’s preset behaves with your content. A more demanding preset needs more processing time; if the CPU cannot keep up, performance can suffer. Test with the actual game or video, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate rather than judging encoder labels alone.

Do not buy hardware before checking what you have

Many computers already include an encoder usable by OBS. Before purchasing a graphics card or separate appliance, verify the exact device’s codec support, compatibility with your operating system, current drivers and OBS release, and acceptance by the streaming destination. A capture card can bring an external HDMI signal into a computer, but it is not itself an alternative to software or hardware encoding.

Check platform, operating-system, and codec support

OBS documents NVIDIA NVENC and AMD AMF on Windows and Linux, and Intel QSV on Windows and Linux with supported Intel processors with graphics. Apple VideoToolbox is supported on Apple Silicon and Intel Macs. OBS notes that streaming with VideoToolbox is not supported on Intel Macs because of a lack of constant-bitrate support required by most streaming services; its guidance for that configuration is to use x264. Check the specific device, OS, drivers, OBS version, and codec before relying on a compatibility statement, especially because model-generation notes can age. See OBS’s compatibility guidance

The destination also sets constraints. For YouTube Live, current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, calls for constant bitrate (CBR), recommends a two-second keyframe interval that must not exceed four seconds, and gives bitrate ranges that vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate. Use the values in YouTube’s current table for your chosen output rather than assuming one bitrate fits every stream. Match stream quality to a reliable upload connection, test before going live, and watch stream health. These are YouTube-specific recommendations, not universal settings for every service. YouTube Live encoder settings

HDR is a separate, more demanding case

YouTube Live HDR requires HEVC. OBS setup guidance calls for a compatible hardware HEVC encoder and Main 10 profile, along with HDR/P010 and a supported HDR color space. YouTube also lists compatible dedicated encoder products for specific HLS HDR workflows, including Cobalt and Telestream Lightspeed Live Stream. That specialized workflow is not a requirement for ordinary streaming or a default recommendation for a single-PC gaming setup. YouTube HDR streaming guidance

Test before relying on a configuration

  1. Set the intended output. Choose the destination, resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate that you plan to use. For YouTube, consult its current encoder table for that combination.
  2. Try the supported hardware encoder first. If your system offers one, stream or record a representative scene and watch for dropped frames or signs that the game is struggling.
  3. Compare x264 under the same conditions. Keep resolution, frame rate, content, and bitrate consistent so that you are comparing encoder behavior rather than different stream settings. Check CPU load and whether the encode remains stable.
  4. Check the picture and stream health. Include fast motion and the type of content you actually broadcast. On YouTube, monitor stream health and confirm the connection can sustain the selected quality.
  5. Keep the configuration that works reliably. A theoretical quality advantage is not useful if the computer cannot encode consistently or the upload connection cannot sustain the stream.

Common problems and what to check

  • Hardware encoder is missing: Confirm the device supports the encoder and codec you want, install an appropriate current driver, and check the installed OS and OBS version. Older compatibility notes may not describe a newer software release or a particular device.
  • The game stutters after switching to hardware encoding: Check GPU load. The encoding unit can reduce CPU work while the game and other graphics tasks still compete for GPU resources. Test a representative scene and adjust output demands if necessary.
  • x264 causes high CPU use or encoding lag: Check CPU headroom and the selected preset. Try a less demanding configuration or test a supported hardware encoder if available; do not raise output demands beyond what the system can sustain.
  • YouTube reports a stream-configuration problem: Recheck codec, CBR, keyframe interval, and the bitrate range for the selected resolution and frame rate against YouTube’s current settings page. The two-second keyframe recommendation must not exceed four seconds.
  • The stream looks poor despite a capable encoder: Check bitrate, motion in the content, selected preset, resolution, and frame rate together. Encoder type alone does not determine quality.
  • HDR setup fails: Confirm that the workflow uses HEVC, a compatible hardware encoder with Main 10, and the HDR/P010 and color-space settings required by the setup. HDR is not required for standard live streaming.
