Promised Consort Radahn, Malenia, and Isshin are the strongest contenders for the hardest Soulsborne boss fights, but there is no objective, genre-wide winner. This ranking focuses on FromSoftware games because the available polling and editorial comparisons are centered on that studio. It weighs how harshly a fight punishes unfamiliarity, how much its phases or mechanics change the challenge, and how broadly players and critics identify it as difficult. The order is an argued comparison, not a measured difficulty score: builds, summons, upgrades, route, and combat-system experience can change the result.
How this ranking compares different games
A Soulsborne ranking needs a standard, but its games do not share one combat system or one definition of a hard fight. Elden Ring and Dark Souls reward stamina management, positioning, and well-timed dodges or blocks. Sekiro centers on deflection, posture, and reading attacks. A player fluent in one system may be a beginner in another, so this list does not pretend that a numerical score can make the fights directly equivalent.

The order below considers three questions: how severely a boss punishes unfamiliarity, whether later phases or mechanics add new demands, and how consistently the fight appears in difficulty discussions. For evidence of player opinion, Samara Summer’s September 15, 2024 GamePro report is a reader poll with more than 7,000 votes—not a representative survey. Editorial rankings from Cheat Code Central, The Escapist, and Gameranx provide useful comparisons, but they are judgments rather than measurements.
Optionality and progression matter too. A late-game optional boss can be approached with different preparation than a mandatory early boss, and Elden Ring’s summons, builds, and DLC progression can substantially affect a run. The rankings are therefore about the fights’ demands, not a claim that every player will experience the same order.
#1 Best Overall
The ranked fights
-
Promised Consort Radahn — Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree
Radahn takes the top spot for the combination of relentless pressure and a second phase that changes the visual and practical demands of the fight. The player has little time to reset after many attacks, and the added effects can make it harder to read what is happening while maintaining a safe position. Learning a consistent response to his openings is central; reacting late or guessing at a punish can quickly turn a promising attempt into a loss.
This is a particularly preparation-sensitive fight: character build, equipment, upgrades, and use of summons can change its difficulty. It also arrives in an expansion, so its challenge should not be treated as directly equivalent to an early mandatory boss. In GamePro’s 2024 reader poll, Radahn led with 24% (1,974 votes). Cheat Code Central also placed him first in its August 28, 2026 editorial ranking. Those are two different kinds of evidence, not proof of an objective first place.
-
Malenia, Blade of Miquella — Elden Ring
Malenia’s difficulty comes from how little room she gives players to make mistakes. She can recover health when she hits, so trades that might be acceptable against another boss can erase progress. Her multi-hit Waterfowl Dance is a major execution and positioning test, while the second phase adds more pressure and attacks that demand quick recognition.

The Escapist’s Elden Ring ranking, updated February 24, 2026, places her near the top and notes that route, build, summons, and DLC blessing progression can shift perceived difficulty. GamePro’s 2024 poll put her second with 19% (1,598 votes). Neither result means that every player will find her harder than every other boss.
Rank #2
-
Isshin, the Sword Saint — Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice
Isshin is the highest-ranked fight here from a game whose combat is built around a different skill vocabulary. Sekiro asks players to deflect attacks and manage posture rather than rely on the stamina-and-roll rhythm familiar from the Souls games. Isshin tests whether the player can keep that rhythm through several phases, recognize changes in attack patterns, and respond without retreating into habits that work better in other games.
That sustained demand earns him third place, but comparisons with Elden Ring or Dark Souls need this qualification: deflection and posture are not interchangeable with dodging and stamina management. GamePro readers placed Isshin third in their 2024 poll, at 13% (1,072 votes). The poll reflects respondents’ views, not a controlled comparison of players with equal experience in each game.
-
Sister Friede — Dark Souls III: Ashes of Ariandel
Friede’s fight is demanding because its phases make endurance part of the challenge. A player who survives one section still has to adapt to later changes rather than treating the first victory as the end of the encounter. That structure raises the cost of a mistake: reaching a later phase does not guarantee a clean finish, and the player must retain enough focus to read new patterns.

Rank #3
SaleElden Ring - PlayStation 4- ELDEN RING is a fantasy action-RPG adventure set within a world created by Hidetaka Miyazaki—creator of the influential DARK SOULS video game series; and George R.R. Martin—author of The New York Times best-selling fantasy series, A Song of Ice and Fire

- HIDETAKA MIYAZAKI: President and Game Director of FromSoftware Inc. Known for directing critically-acclaimed games in beloved franchises including Armored Core and Dark Souls
- GEORGE R. R. MARTIN: the #1 The New York Times bestselling author of many novels, including the acclaimed series A Song of Ice and Fire—A Game of Thrones, A Clash of Kings, A Storm of Swords, A Feast For Crows, and A Dance with Dragons
-
Orphan of Kos — Bloodborne: The Old Hunters
Orphan’s fast, irregular aggression makes spacing and timing difficult to settle into. The later portion of the encounter becomes more chaotic, so a player who has learned the first part still has to adjust rather than simply repeat the same safe approach. That combination of pace and changing pressure places Orphan high, though the exact challenge depends on how comfortable the player is with Bloodborne’s faster combat.
GamePro’s 2024 poll assigned Orphan 7% (554 votes). That figure shows meaningful support among poll respondents, but it does not directly measure difficulty or establish a precise position among every boss. Gameranx also includes Orphan in its cross-series editorial discussion.
-
Darkeater Midir — Dark Souls III: The Ringed City
Midir tests patience and positioning as much as reaction speed. His size and reach can make the fight feel overwhelming, but staying close enough to read and punish his head attacks is generally more useful than chasing damage wherever an opening appears. The challenge is to learn when the long attack sequences are truly over and avoid turning a disciplined fight into a desperate exchange.

The sources summarized here do not provide a comparable player-poll percentage for him.
-
Manus, Father of the Abyss — Dark Souls: Artorias of the Abyss
Manus earns a place among the series’ toughest fights through a forceful mix of close-range pressure and attacks that punish a player who treats distance as automatic safety. The encounter rewards learning its rhythms and responding deliberately rather than spending stamina on panic rolls. Its age and expansion context make a direct comparison with Elden Ring’s late-game fights imperfect, but it remains one of the older candidates in Cheat Code Central’s six-fight ranking.
-
Fume Knight — Dark Souls II: Crown of the Old Iron King
Fume Knight is a demanding test of stamina discipline and attack recognition. His moves can punish an early dodge or a greedy counterattack, and the shift in his fighting style changes what the player must watch for as the encounter progresses. Cheat Code Central includes him in its six-fight editorial ranking; that inclusion is one outlet’s assessment, not broad consensus.
-
Artorias — Dark Souls: Artorias of the Abyss
Artorias is a sharp duel built around reading forward pressure and choosing safe opportunities to attack. His moves are less visually elaborate than the late-game fights above, but the encounter still demands deliberate timing and an understanding of when aggression is safe. Cheat Code Central includes him among its ranked fights, while Gameranx’s cross-series list offers another editorial comparison point.

Darklurker — Dark Souls II
Darklurker rounds out the list as a different sort of challenge: the encounter’s multiple threats can make positioning and target awareness as important as learning an individual moveset. Cheat Code Central includes the boss among its six candidates. The available comparisons support considering Darklurker among difficult fights, but not treating this exact tenth-place position as an established consensus.

What the poll and trophy figures do—and do not—show
GamePro’s September 2024 poll is the clearest audience snapshot in the available evidence. Its leading results were:
| Poll position | Boss | Share of votes | Votes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Promised Consort Radahn | 24% | 1,974 |
| 2 | Malenia, Blade of Miquella | 19% | 1,598 |
| 3 | Isshin, the Sword Saint | 13% | 1,072 |
| Position not stated here | Orphan of Kos | 7% | 554 |
These are shares of more than 7,000 reader votes, not completion rates, win rates, or a survey designed to represent all players. They indicate what those respondents considered difficult; they cannot show that a boss is intrinsically harder than another for players with different experience or builds.
A separate AUTOMATON WEST analysis published November 29, 2023 reported PlayStation trophy acquisition figures across seven FromSoftware games, focusing on bosses required for story progression. It reported a 44.6% clear rate for Father Gascoigne and 31.2% for Malenia. A trophy rate is a useful signal of where progression drops off in that trophy population, but it is not a clean boss-difficulty score: whether a boss is mandatory, the game’s age and audience, and the point at which players stop playing all affect the number. That is why Father Gascoigne’s figure should not be ranked directly against optional expansion bosses.

Why a broader Soulslike ranking would need more evidence
“Soulslike” covers games from multiple studios, with different combat systems and player populations. The evidence used here is overwhelmingly FromSoftware-focused: the strongest quantified audience data is a poll of FromSoftware bosses, while the other cited rankings and trophy analysis also concentrate on FromSoftware games. It cannot support a complete ranking across the genre. Non-FromSoftware fights may belong in a broader comparison, but this evidence does not establish where they should sit.
