Hard drive repair and data recovery are different jobs, so there is no single price that answers every “hard drive repair cost” question. In US examples published by Rossmann Group in 2026, listed data-recovery prices range from $100 for a simple copy from a working drive to $2,000 for platter surface damage; Western Digital separately describes Ontrack Standard Service recoveries for a single drive at about $1,000–$2,000. These are provider-specific examples, not a market average or a quote for your drive. The first thing to establish is whether you need the drive restored to service or its files retrieved.
Repair or data recovery: what are you paying for?
A repair aims to make a drive work again. Data recovery aims to retrieve files; recovered data does not necessarily mean the original drive can be used again. Rossmann Group describes its recovery process as imaging platters sector by sector onto healthy media, and says its published lab pricing is based on the failure class rather than the drive’s purchase price or the amount of data it holds. That is the provider’s description of its approach, not a universal method or guarantee. Rossmann Group’s published pricing and service information

Western Digital states that it does not repair drives or recommend repair services, and warns that repair services can void warranty. WD also does not perform data recovery itself; it directs customers to third-party partners and disclaims responsibility for those providers. Western Digital’s repair and recovery guidance

#1 Best Overall
- SATA DRIVES ONLY — 2.5in & 3.5in: Works with SATA I/II/III hard drives and SSDs. Does NOT support IDE/PATA, M.2 NVMe, M.2 SATA, SAS, or drives already in a USB enclosure. Check your drive's connector before ordering — a bare SATA drive has a wide flat L-shaped edge connector, not a ribbon cable or a small M.2 gold-finger card.
- USB TYPE-A HOST CABLE — NOT A USB-C PORT: The included host cable ends in USB Type-A and plugs into a USB 3.0 Type-A port. If your computer has only USB-C ports, you will need a USB-C to USB-A adapter, which is not included. For stable operation plug directly into the computer — USB hubs and USB 2.0 ports may cause intermittent disconnections.
- REAL-WORLD SPEED, NOT INTERFACE MATH: USB 3.0 with UASP support (UASP-capable host required). Typical mechanical HDD transfer speeds are 100-160 MB/s, which is the drive's own limit, not the port's; SSD speeds vary up to the USB interface maximum. Backward compatible with USB 2.0 and USB 1.1.
- 12V POWER ADAPTER INCLUDED — REQUIRED FOR 3.5in DRIVES: A 12V/2A AC power adapter is in the box and a wall outlet is needed. 3.5in HDDs cannot run on USB power alone — without the adapter the drive will fail to spin up or drop out during use. 2.5in drives are generally bus-powered, but the adapter is recommended for stability.
- PLUG AND PLAY, TOOL-FREE, HOT-SWAP: No drivers on Windows 10/11, macOS, or Linux. Lay-flat bay accepts a bare drive without tools, swaps without rebooting, and an LED shows power and activity. Note: S.M.A.R.T. diagnostics are not passed through the USB bridge, and on macOS a drive may need remounting after sleep. Drive not included.

| Ontrack Standard Service, one drive | About $1,000–$2,000 | Western Digital’s current US page describes this range without a WD Data Recovery Plan. What changes the final quote?
- Failure type and condition: A working drive that needs a copy is a different case from firmware trouble, mechanical damage, or platter surface damage. WD also says service level, device type, cause of loss, and condition affect its recovery cost. Western Digital’s cost factors
- Parts and destination storage: A donor drive or other donor parts can be extra. The target drive used to hold recovered files may also be billed separately.
- Tax and logistics: Ask whether tax, shipping, and rush handling are included; published provider pricing may list some costs separately or conditionally.
- Service terms: A diagnostic charge, payment trigger, or definition of successful recovery can materially change what you owe. These terms are case-specific, not established as a common industry standard.
- Device-specific complications: Rossmann Group says some helium-sealed HDDs have higher pricing than its listed mechanical tiers.
Questions to ask before authorizing work
- What outcome is included? Ask whether the quote is for restoring the drive to service, retrieving files, or both. Recovery does not necessarily make the original drive reusable.
- Is diagnosis free, and when is the price fixed? Get the diagnostic fee and any post-evaluation price approval in writing. Rossmann Group describes a free diagnostic and no-data/no-fee terms for qualifying cases, but you should verify applicability to yours. Rossmann Group’s terms
- What can be added to the quoted amount? Confirm donor parts, target drive, tax, shipping, and rush charges, and ask for an itemized total.
- How is partial recovery treated? Ask what counts as success for billing purposes and what you pay if only some files are recovered. The cited provider and manufacturer pages do not establish one industry-wide definition.
- What turnaround applies to this failure? Ask what could delay the estimate, especially if parts are needed. Published turnaround estimates differ by scenario and provider. Rossmann Group’s scenario estimates
- Could this affect warranty coverage? Check the policy for the exact product, region, and circumstances before approving service.
Check warranty terms before third-party work
Warranty outcomes depend on the manufacturer and circumstances; do not assume that a recovery attempt preserves coverage. Western Digital warns that repairs may void warranty. Apple says data-recovery attempts are not covered by Apple Limited Warranty or AppleCare; eligible products recovered by an Apple-recommended recovery company can be returned to Apple for service. Toshiba warns that non-authorized repair or recovery may affect warranty in circumstances involving misuse, tampering, or improper handling. Check the policy that applies to the specific device. When a recovery plan may be an option
Western Digital describes a paid data recovery plan that includes one in-lab recovery attempt and shipping, subject to conditions on eligible products and plan terms. A separate WD page advertises a starting one-time plan payment for qualifying store products, but plan pricing and availability can change. That offer should not be assumed to cover every existing drive; check current eligibility and terms before relying on it. WD Data Recovery Plan details; WD plan availability and terms

How to compare quotes fairly
Compare offers only after confirming they promise the same outcome and cover the same failure. Put the diagnosis, included work, payment terms, partial-recovery rules, expected turnaround, warranty implications, and any required destination storage side by side. A low starting price may exclude parts or a target drive, while a higher quote may cover a different service level. No common industry success-rate figure or representative market-wide average price is established by the cited pages, so evaluate the provider’s written case-specific terms rather than treating an advertised price as a prediction of your result.
