Happo vs BackstopJS: Features, Setup, and Workflow

Happo offers a hosted visual-testing workflow with integrations and documented accessibility checks. BackstopJS uses a CLI and explicit screenshot-reference approvals.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose Happo if you want a hosted visual-testing service with integrations and documented accessibility checks; choose BackstopJS if you want an open-source, CLI-centered workflow that compares screenshots against image references you approve. Both help catch unintended visual changes, but their setup, review process, browser evidence, and operating responsibilities differ.

Happo vs BackstopJS at a glance

Area Happo BackstopJS
Operating model Hosted visual and accessibility testing service with an open-source integration client. Open-source package with a CLI-centered screenshot comparison workflow.
Typical setup Install a package or framework integration, configure credentials and targets, then run it in CI. The repository example uses happo.config.ts and npx happo. Initialize with backstop init, configure scenarios, and run the test and approval commands.
Review loop CI captures selected stories or test states, compares them with a baseline, and returns a review link or diff. Generate a visual report with backstop test, inspect it, then use backstop approve for accepted changes.
Browser evidence Published materials name Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Microsoft Edge, and iOS Safari; availability varies by plan. The project README describes Chrome Headless and integrated Docker rendering. A full current browser matrix is not established here.
Integrations and interactions Storybook, Playwright, Cypress, a generic API, and common CI systems are named in Happo materials. The README describes CI and source-control compatibility, with Playwright or Puppeteer scripts for interactions.
Accessibility checks Happo says accessibility regression testing is included on plans and can accompany screenshot runs. No accessibility-testing capability is established by the README evidence cited here.
Visual-noise controls Happo describes silencing animations, waiting for fonts and assets, and setting color-delta tolerance. The README documents scenario and rendering configuration; equivalent noise controls are not established here.
Cost model Hosted plans with snapshot quotas and overage pricing; see the dated figures below. The package is described as open source. Hosting, storage, support, and maintenance costs are not quantified in the cited README.

For another hosted screenshot service to consider first, ScreenshotNeo focuses on clean captures, bills only clean shots, and has a $5 paid plan for 3,000 shots; it is a screenshot API and MCP server rather than a direct replacement for either visual-regression review workflow.

How each tool handles visual changes

Happo: integrate capture with review

Happo’s documented model is to render selected stories or test states in CI, capture screenshots, compare them with a baseline, and provide a review link or diff. Its integrations support Storybook, Playwright, Cypress, and a generic API, so the capture source can match an existing component or browser-test workflow. Happo also says accessibility regression checks can run alongside screenshot checks.

BackstopJS: manage scenario references explicitly

BackstopJS centers on configured scenarios and reference images. The documented loop is to initialize scenarios, capture and compare a new run, inspect the generated report, and approve only intentional changes. Approval updates the reference images used for future comparisons, so it is a baseline change that should receive review rather than a routine way to dismiss every diff.

Set up Happo

Exact package APIs and framework instructions can change, so use the current official documentation for the integration you use. The repository example documents this general sequence:

  1. Install the development dependency with npm install happo --save-dev (the README also names pnpm and yarn).
  2. Create happo.config.ts with the API credentials supplied through environment variables and the browser targets to run.
  3. For Storybook, configure the Happo plugin according to its current product documentation; for another project, choose the supported integration that matches your test setup.
  4. Run npx happo locally to check the configuration, then add the run to CI so selected states are captured and reviewed there.

Happo’s published Storybook workflow is plugin-led and connects the run to CI. Browser availability depends on plan, so check the current plan matrix against the browsers your users need before relying on a particular target.

Set up BackstopJS

The project README documents the following CLI workflow. Confirm exact configuration options in the current project documentation before adopting them, because the available evidence here does not establish a complete current browser or feature matrix.

  1. Install BackstopJS using the method in the current project README, then run backstop init to create its initial configuration and scenarios.
  2. Define the documents or URLs to capture, viewport sizes, selectors, cookies, and interactions needed to reach each state. The README describes these scenario controls.
  3. Run backstop test after a code change. It renders screenshots, compares them with reference images, and generates a visual report.
  4. Inspect the report and investigate unintended differences. When a change is intentional and reviewed, run backstop approve to replace the references.
  5. Run the same test step in CI and decide where reference images and reports will be stored and how reviewers will access them.

Which should your team choose?

  • Choose Happo when a hosted review service, a supported integration with Storybook/Playwright/Cypress, or documented accessibility regression checks are important. Verify the plan-dependent browser matrix and snapshot allowance for your workload.
  • Choose BackstopJS when you want a package-centered CLI, configurable URL scenarios, and explicit control over reference-image approval. Plan for CI runtime, image storage, maintenance, and ownership of the workflow.
  • Validate browser needs first. Happo publishes browser names with plan variation. The README evidence for BackstopJS specifically identifies Chrome Headless and Docker rendering, but does not establish its full current browser matrix; check the current project documentation for required rendering options.
  • Treat accessibility as a separate requirement. Happo explicitly describes accessibility regression testing. Do not assume BackstopJS provides an equivalent check based on the README evidence cited here; verify a separate accessibility tool if needed.
  • Agree on baseline governance. Decide who reviews diffs, who may approve reference updates, and how shared baselines are stored and maintained in CI.

Happo pricing and snapshot estimates

Happo’s official pricing page listed the following figures when reviewed in 2026. Prices and quotas can change, so verify the live page before budgeting. Happo defines one snapshot as a screenshot of one component variant in one browser; its suggested estimate is variants × browsers × monthly runs.

Plan Monthly price listed in 2026 Included snapshots per month Additional snapshot price
Free $0 5,000 Not stated on the cited pricing page.
Starter $149 50,000 $0.006 each
Growth $399 150,000 $0.006 each
Pro $749 300,000 $0.006 each

Those are observed official page figures, not guaranteed or permanent rates. No comparable BackstopJS hosting or support price is established by the cited README; open-source availability does not make CI execution, image storage, or maintenance cost-free.

For a one-off website capture rather than a baseline-and-diff workflow, ScreenshotNeo takes a URL in one request and returns an image or PDF. The cURL example saves a WebP screenshot:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for parameters. It accepts cookie banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture, with each step configurable. Bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed; AI agents can use its MCP server; and the free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card, while paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month with no card.
