What the Vita project is—and what works
BirchWoodGod’s Halo: Combat Evolved for PS Vita project recompiles the original Xbox game’s code for the Vita’s ARM processor and translates its Direct3D rendering for the Vita GPU. The project explicitly describes this as a port, not emulation.

According to the project README, the full campaign is accessible through the menus. Checkpoints, saves, Save and Quit, cinematics, and converted movie files are listed as working. Solo multiplayer maps also work. This does not mean every feature is finished or bug-free.

The project maintainer reports a maximum of 30 frames per second, with performance changing by scene. These are developer-reported figures, not results from an independent benchmark.

The project says its settings prioritize frame rate: distant models and tiny objects receive less detail, static props and object lighting update less often, checks for sounds muffled behind walls run less frequently, and rendering uses 75% resolution. These are described as implementation choices, not a controlled comparison with the Xbox version.
What you need to install it
The project’s README lists these requirements:
- A PS Vita or PS TV running HENkaku/Ensō on firmware 3.60–3.74.
- VitaShell to install the VPK and transfer files.
- The Vita shader compiler file at
ur0:data/libshacccg.suprx. The README says the game remains on its loading image if this file is missing. - About 1.5 GB of free space on
ux0:, because the game stores decompressed copies of loaded levels. The storage figure is the project’s stated requirement. - Your own Xbox copy of Halo: Combat Evolved, on disc or as a disc image. The project says PC-version maps do not work.
Installation at a high level
- Use the project’s latest release to obtain
halo.vpk, then install it with VitaShell. - Prepare the game files from your own Xbox disc or disc image using the project’s documented
extract-xisoprocess, and transfer them as directed in the repository. - Confirm that the shader compiler file is present at
ur0:data/libshacccg.suprxand thatux0:has the required free space before launching.
Follow the repository’s current install notes for exact file placement and release-specific steps. The project requires Xbox game data; PC-version maps are not a substitute.

Multiplayer and known problems
The README says system link between Vita systems on the same Wi-Fi has been implemented but is still being tested. PC opponents are unsupported. The project also lists these reported issues:
- Some objects can flicker or disappear near the edges of the screen.
- Camouflaged Elites may appear black after a long session.
- The game may briefly freeze for one or two seconds the first time an area loads.
- At least one player has reported checkpoints failing to trigger after resuming a save.
