It launched on Xbox in late 2001; the Mac edition did not ship until December 3, 2003. The missed opportunity was a timely Mac release—not a game that never came to Mac.
Halo’s original plan included the Mac
Bungie unveiled Halo at Macworld Expo on July 21, 1999, during Steve Jobs’s keynote. Its announcement made the platform plan explicit: “Halo is being developed for simultaneous release on the Macintosh and Windows platforms.” Bungie’s announcement framed Halo as a game for both computer platforms, not as a Mac exclusive.

Microsoft’s acquisition changed the platform path
Microsoft acquired Bungie in 2000. Macworld’s retrospective connects the acquisition to Halo’s shift toward Xbox, where the game appeared in late 2001. Contemporary Macworld coverage described the post-acquisition decision to develop Halo exclusively for Xbox. Macworld’s retrospective and its contemporaneous coverage document the change from the original Mac-and-Windows plan.

Mac plans returned publicly in 2002, when Macworld reported the announcement of Mac and PC versions, with a native Mac OS X edition intended. Macworld then reported December 3, 2003, as the Mac edition’s ship date. Macworld’s coverage of the Mac release establishes that Halo eventually reached Mac, more than two years after its late-2001 Xbox debut.

What was the missed opportunity?
Halo’s Mac opportunity was the chance for Mac players to get the game alongside Windows players, as Bungie originally announced, rather than after its Xbox-first commercial launch. The sequence is clear: a public Mac-and-Windows plan in 1999, an Xbox-focused development path after Microsoft acquired Bungie, and a Mac release in 2003.
That history does not establish what a timely Mac release would have changed for Apple, its gaming strategy, or Mac gaming overall. Nor does it show that Microsoft acquired Bungie specifically to keep Halo from the Mac. The defensible conclusion is narrower: the original Mac plan was delayed and redirected, then ultimately fulfilled.
