Potentiometer sticks detect movement through a changing electrical resistance at a moving contact. Hall-effect and TMR sticks detect changes in a magnetic field instead. Magnetic sensing avoids wear at the potentiometer’s resistive track, but it does not make a complete controller stick immune to drift or failure. Calibration, mechanics, and firmware still affect how a stick behaves.
How the three stick technologies work
Potentiometer: movement changes resistance
A potentiometer uses a resistive sensing element and a moving contact. As you move the stick, the contact changes the resistance being measured, and the controller interprets that change as position. Because the sensing method involves physical contact, the resistive track can wear.

Hall effect: movement changes a magnetic-field reading
A Hall-effect stick detects changes in a magnetic field rather than relying on a moving contact rubbing across a resistive track. The key durability distinction is specific: this design avoids wear at that sensing contact. It does not remove every possible source of inaccurate input or failure from the stick assembly.

TMR: a different magnetic sensing effect
TMR stands for tunnel magnetoresistance. Like Hall effect, it is a magnetic sensing approach, but it uses a distinct sensing effect. GameSir describes its TMR technology as precise and low power, and says its sensor reads magnetic changes without physical friction; those are the manufacturer’s claims, not independent measurements comparing finished controllers. SCUF also treats Hall-effect and TMR thumbsticks as distinct sensing methods (GameSir technology overview; SCUF support FAQ).

Does magnetic sensing prevent stick drift?
No stick technology should be described as universally drift-proof on the evidence available here. Magnetic sensing removes wear at the potentiometer’s resistive sensing contact, but stick behavior also depends on calibration, sensor variation, temperature effects, mechanical centering, and how firmware interprets the signal. Texas Instruments’ application note on Hall-effect joystick design discusses device variation and temperature drift as factors that affect calibration and post-processing (TI, “Joystick and Lever Design With Hall-Effect Sensors”).
That distinction matters when diagnosing a controller: a magnetic sensor can avoid one wear mechanism without guaranteeing that the whole stick will always report a perfect center or respond consistently. A sensor label alone cannot establish a controller’s real-world reliability.

Hall effect vs. TMR: is one better?
The available sources do not establish a universal winner. They do not provide controlled, independent comparisons of Hall-effect and TMR controller sticks for accuracy, latency, or whole-controller battery life. Claims that TMR is always more accurate in gameplay, faster, or a meaningful battery-life upgrade therefore need model-specific measurements rather than the technology name alone.
TechRadar notes that high sensitivity depends on calibration and firmware, reinforcing why finished-controller implementation matters more than a sensor label in isolation (TechRadar, published August 15, 2026). A well-implemented Hall-effect stick may suit a player better than a poorly calibrated TMR implementation, and the reverse is possible too.

What to compare when choosing a controller
Compare the complete controller, not just whether its sticks are called Hall effect or TMR. Check these details for the exact model and revision:
- Calibration: Look for a reliable calibration process and clear instructions. Sensor variation and temperature effects can influence calibration in Hall-effect designs.
- Dead-zone behavior: Check how the controller and the games you play handle small inputs near the center. Dead-zone settings can change how sensitive a stick feels.
- Mechanical feel: Stick tension, centering, and return-to-center behavior affect play but cannot be inferred from the sensor type. Look for model-specific specifications or hands-on reviews.
- Replaceability: Find out whether the stick module can be replaced and whether a replacement is compatible with your exact controller revision. A module that fits one version may not fit another.
- Platform support and price: Verify support and current regional availability for the exact product. The sources cited here do not establish current model prices or a model-by-model compatibility list.
What the evidence does—and does not—show
The defensible general distinction is that potentiometers use a contact-based resistive sensing element, whereas Hall-effect and TMR sticks use magnetic sensing. Magnetic sensing avoids wear at the potentiometer’s resistive track. The sources cited here do not establish a comparative lifespan, a cycle-count advantage, or an across-the-board performance difference between TMR and Hall effect. Treat claims about precision, power, and durability as claims about a specific product unless independent, model-specific evidence supports a broader conclusion.
