Check the exact platform, edition and publisher statement—not just the word “physical.” On Nintendo Switch 2, first find out whether the package contains a standard game card or a game-key card: Nintendo says a game-key card does not hold the full game data and requires a download. For an original Nintendo Switch release, verify the specific edition with its publisher; there is no universal rule in the available Nintendo guidance proving that every Switch cartridge contains the complete base game.
Check the exact edition before you buy
- Identify the platform and edition. Note the full game name, whether it is for Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch 2, the region, and the edition or product code shown on the box or retailer listing. Different generations and editions can use different formats.
- Look for download or game-key-card wording. For a Switch 2 release, inspect the front of the package and the card. Nintendo UK says a key icon appears at the top right of a game-key card, and its guidance says packaging states the storage space required. Nintendo also illustrates how game-key-card packaging looks: Nintendo’s game-key-card explanation.
- Check the publisher’s page for that exact release. Look for an explicit statement about whether the base game is on the card, whether a download is required, and whether an internet connection is needed. Do not assume a statement about one publisher or edition applies to another.
- Ask if the listing is unclear. Ask the retailer or publisher to confirm the exact SKU and edition, and keep the response or a clear package image if the distinction matters to your purchase.
What the card formats mean
| Format | What to expect | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Nintendo Switch game card | Nintendo’s cited platform guidance says original Switch software does not use the game-key-card format, but it does not establish a universal rule that every original Switch card contains the complete base game. | Check the exact edition and its publisher’s download and content statements. Konami, for example, says the physical cartridges covered by its support answer contain the games and require no download or online connection; that answer applies to Konami’s products, not every publisher’s releases. Konami Support’s statement. |
| Nintendo Switch 2 standard game card | Nintendo says Switch 2 supports standard game cards as well as game-key cards. | Confirm that the package is for a standard game card, then consult the publisher for that edition’s contents and download requirements. Nintendo’s format guidance. |
| Nintendo Switch 2 game-key card | The card provides a key to download the full game; it does not contain the full game data. An internet connection and enough space on the system or a microSD Express card are needed for the download. The game-key card must remain available to play the downloaded game. | Check the package’s storage requirement and whether you have the required connection and storage. Nintendo UK says later starts can work offline after the download. Nintendo’s game-key-card guidance. |
Nintendo Japan says game-key cards are for Switch 2 software, not Nintendo Switch software. That helps distinguish the formats, but it does not answer whether a particular original Switch card includes all of its base-game data. Nintendo Japan’s guidance.

Separate the base game from updates, DLC and online play
“Does the full game come on the cartridge?” and “Do I need to download anything?” are different questions. A regular card may include the base game while an update or additional content still needs to be downloaded. Online play is a separate requirement and needs an internet connection. Nintendo’s general support guidance describes these download and connection requirements: Nintendo’s update and online-play guidance.
- Base game: Is the main game data on this exact card, or must it be downloaded?
- First-time download: Does installation require downloading the full game, as with a Switch 2 game-key card?
- Updates and additional content: Are patches or DLC optional or required, and do they need an internet connection?
- Playing offline: Does this edition require an online check or connection after installation? For a game-key card, Nintendo UK says later starts can work offline, but the card is still needed to play.
Do not confuse a digital bundle with a cartridge release
A statement that a bundle includes a “full game” does not necessarily mean the game is stored on a cartridge. Nintendo describes its 2024 Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Nintendo Switch and Switch OLED bundle as including a full-game download registered through the eShop. That is a digital inclusion, not evidence about cartridge contents. Nintendo’s bundle announcement.

Compare editions without mixing them up
If two listings look similar, compare them using the same details rather than relying on a title or cover image alone:
- Console generation and platform printed on the package
- Region, edition name and exact SKU or product code
- Standard game card or game-key card, including any key icon
- Package wording about required downloads and storage
- Publisher confirmation of base-game data and internet requirements
- Separate requirements for updates, DLC and online features
Do not use a later edition’s packaging or publisher statement as proof of what is on an earlier release’s card.

What published statements can—and cannot—confirm
Konami Support’s August 29, 2022 answer says: “Yes. All physical cartridges contain all of the games and does not require a download nor online connection.” Treat that as Konami’s answer about the physical cartridges covered by its support page, not as an industry-wide promise.

Nintendo Support describes the Switch 2 distinction directly: “Game-key cards are different from regular game cards, because they don’t contain the full game data.” No industry-wide percentage for how much of a typical Switch game is stored on a cartridge is established by these sources, so a general percentage would be misleading. If exact contents matter, rely on the package and publisher confirmation for the edition you intend to buy.
