Hall-effect and TMR keyboards use magnetic sensors to track key movement rather than relying on metal contacts to register a press. Both can support adjustable actuation and dynamic reset, but only when the keyboard’s electronics and firmware provide those features. The sensor type affects how movement is detected; it does not tell you whether a key feels smooth, tactile, heavy, loud, or quiet.
What “magnetic switch” means
In a common magnetic keyboard design, a magnet moves with the switch stem while a sensor sits on the keyboard’s PCB beneath it. As the key travels, the sensor’s output changes. The keyboard controller and firmware interpret that signal as key position and decide when to register a press.

The sensor is usually part of the keyboard, not inside the replaceable switch. The moving switch provides the physical mechanism and magnet; the PCB provides the magnetic sensing. That distinction matters when checking whether a board accepts replacement switches.

How Hall-effect sensing works
A linear Hall-effect sensor responds to a magnetic field by producing a voltage. In a typical setup, the magnet in the switch stem moves closer to or farther from the PCB sensor as the key is pressed. The resulting voltage changes with the field’s magnitude and polarity. The keyboard can sample that output, calibrate it, and map it to key travel. Acheron’s Hall-effect guide describes this common arrangement.

The small size and lightweight design make it easier to carry and perfect for business trip
Because the signal can vary continuously rather than changing only when contacts meet, the keyboard can let software set the point in the key’s travel where a press registers. Texas Instruments explains that an analog-to-digital converter can use the sensor’s linear voltage output to set an actuation point in its keyboard position-sensing application note. The available range and controls depend on the keyboard’s hardware and firmware.
How TMR sensing works
TMR stands for tunnel magnetoresistance. A TMR sensor contains two ferromagnetic layers separated by a very thin insulating barrier. Changes in the layers’ magnetic alignment affect how readily electrons tunnel through the barrier, changing the sensor’s electrical resistance. The keyboard reads that change to infer the movement of the switch magnet. RTINGS’ comparison of Hall-effect and TMR keyboards describes the mechanism and discusses early keyboard implementations.

Manufacturers promote TMR as potentially offering benefits such as higher sensitivity, lower power use, or improved signal quality. Those claims do not establish that every TMR keyboard is more accurate or better than every Hall-effect model. A complete implementation—including sensor, PCB, calibration, firmware, and tuning—determines how a particular keyboard performs.
How magnetic switches differ from conventional mechanical switches
A conventional contact-based mechanical switch registers a press when electrical contacts meet and close a circuit. A magnetic keyboard instead measures the changing position of a magnet without using that contact closure as its sensing event. It still has a physical key mechanism that moves and returns under spring force.

“Mechanical” describes the physical key mechanism, not one required sensing method. A magnetic keyboard can still have a spring, stem, and housing, and its typing feel depends on those parts, lubrication, keycaps, and the keyboard’s construction. Hall effect or TMR alone does not specify feel or sound.
Other approaches can also track key position. RTINGS describes analog optical switches, which use light, and inductive switches, which use coils in the PCB. Their features may overlap with magnetic keyboards, but the sensing mechanisms differ. Available evidence does not establish one approach as best for every use.

What the features mean in practice
- Adjustable actuation: Software lets you select the travel point at which a press registers, within the range supported by the board.
- Rapid Trigger or dynamic reset: Firmware changes reset behavior in response to key movement rather than relying only on a single fixed mechanical reset point. The exact behavior and settings vary by model.
- Analog input: Some keyboards can expose continuous key-position values to software. Do not assume every magnetic keyboard offers this mode or that every application can use it.
- Hot-swap compatibility: The PCB and socket design determine which switches fit and work. A board advertised as supporting both magnetic and ordinary mechanical switches is a model-specific case, not a rule for TMR keyboards generally.
- Small adjustment steps and high polling rates: These are specifications, not proof of a visible improvement in typing, gaming, or measured accuracy. Compare complete products and independent testing where available.
What published product specifications do—and don’t—show
The following figures are manufacturer specifications or claims, not independently verified comparisons across keyboards. A small listed adjustment step does not by itself establish real-world accuracy.

How to choose between Hall effect, TMR, and other keyboards
Start with the individual keyboard, not the sensor label. There is no established industry-wide statistic in the cited sources that settles Hall-effect versus TMR accuracy, lifespan, or market share. RTINGS reports that its early TMR examples nearly matched many high-end Hall-effect models in input accuracy and notes that broader adoption remains uncertain.
Quick Recap
- Check sensing and calibration: Identify whether the board uses Hall effect, TMR, optical, or another approach. Look for independent testing of consistency and calibration.
- Check firmware behavior: Confirm supported actuation range, reset behavior, analog features, calibration options, and whether settings work or persist across the operating systems you use.
- Verify switch compatibility: Look for explicit documentation for the exact keyboard and switch type. “Hot-swap” alone does not establish magnetic-to-mechanical compatibility.
- Assess the physical typing experience: Compare force, travel, stability, sound, keycap profile, and construction. Those qualities cannot be inferred from “TMR” or “Hall effect.”
- For wireless models, check runtime evidence: Battery capacity and manufacturer claims are useful specifications, but independent runtime tests are more informative when available.
- Consider the ecosystem: Software quality, firmware updates, replacement-switch availability, warranty, and support can matter more than a sensor specification.
