Neither makes a controller immune to drift or failure. For most buyers, the better choice depends less on the label and more on the controller’s feel, calibration, compatibility, and overall quality.
How Hall effect and TMR sticks sense movement
Both technologies detect joystick movement through changes in a magnetic field, without relying on a potentiometer’s rubbing electrical contact. They differ in what the sensor measures:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Hall effect: The sensor responds to changes in magnetic field.
- TMR (tunnel magnetoresistance): The sensor responds to changes in magnetic resistance.
That distinction describes the sensing method; it does not, by itself, tell you how accurately a particular controller tracks movement or how long its sticks will last.

Does either technology prevent stick drift?
Contactless sensing removes one potential source of wear: the electrical contact used in a potentiometer. It does not eliminate every possible cause of inaccurate centering or failure. Springs, gimbals, calibration, firmware, and other parts of the stick assembly still affect performance. SCUF’s FAQ also distinguishes Hall effect sensing from conventional Hall Effect thumbsticks; the terms are not interchangeable with a guarantee of drift-free operation.
#1 Best Overall
- Compatible with Windows and Android.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
Consider the technology a way to reduce one wear mechanism, not a promise that a stick will never drift. If a controller develops a problem, check the manufacturer’s calibration and repair guidance. Replacement modules are model-specific, so do not assume a module will fit across controllers.
Is TMR more precise or power-efficient?
TMR is often marketed as precise and energy-efficient, but the evidence available does not establish that it outperforms Hall effect in every controller. GameSir promotes low-power and zero-dead-zone claims for its TMR technology, and ASUS says the TMR sticks in its ROG Raikiri II are more accurate and power-efficient than Hall effect. These are manufacturer claims, not universal results from a controlled, independent comparison.

- Versatile compatibility: supports Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One X/S consoles and PC Win10 and above (including the game platform Steam).
- Precise control: features Hall joysticks and Hall triggers for a comfortable feeling, long service life and improved game accuracy.
- Plug and Play Convenience: Wired USB connection (removable) for easy setup and instant play without the need for additional drivers.
- Customizable experience: Includes 2 custom backbuttons that allow users to eliminate false triggers and improve their gaming experience.
- Impressive gameplay: Provides a pulsating vibration trigger and an asymmetric vibration grip motor for intense tactile feedback.
A TechRadar review describes the TMR sticks in GameSir’s Cyclone 2 as smooth and precise, while noting that the difference from Hall effect was not large. That is a reviewer’s impression of a specific product, not a standardized measurement of the two technologies.

How to choose a controller
Compare complete controllers rather than choosing by sensor type alone. Check these points before buying:
- Platform compatibility: Confirm the controller supports your console, PC, or other intended device, including any platform-specific features you need.
- Connection: Check whether it is wired, wireless, or supports both, and whether that suits your setup.
- Stick feel: Tension, range of motion, shape, and centering feel are personal. A sensor technology label cannot tell you whether the sticks will feel right.
- Calibration and adjustment: Check what settings are available and how the controller handles centering and dead zones.
- Other controls: Triggers, buttons, paddles, and layout may matter more to your games than the stick sensor.
- Warranty and price: Compare the support offered for the specific model and its current price in your region.
- Independent testing: Give more weight to repeatable measurements on the exact controller than to broad claims about a sensor category.
Examples of each technology
Examples in product coverage include GameSir’s Cyclone 2, identified as a TMR controller, and Super Nova, identified as a Hall effect controller. ASUS describes the ROG Raikiri II as using TMR sticks. These examples show that both technologies are available in complete controllers; they do not establish that one is categorically better. Check each manufacturer’s current specifications, platform support, and regional availability before purchasing.

Which should you choose?
Choose a well-reviewed controller that fits your platform and hand, offers the controls and connection you want, and has clear calibration and warranty support. If two otherwise suitable models differ mainly in Hall effect versus TMR, do not assume TMR is automatically more accurate, longer-lasting, or better for battery life. Prefer model-specific independent testing when available; otherwise, treat the sensor type as one factor rather than the deciding one.
