Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Before buying or downloading an MMO on Steam, check the exact game’s system requirements, online and account conditions, full cost model, recent reviews, development status, and refund eligibility. These details vary by title and can change, so another game’s requirements or a general “free-to-play” label are not reliable substitutes for the game’s own listing.
1. Check whether your PC meets this game’s requirements
Open the Steam Store page for the exact MMO and compare both its minimum and recommended requirements with the computer you plan to use. Check the operating system, processor, memory, graphics, DirectX version, internet connection, and free storage—not just the graphics card or the minimum line.

The listed storage requirement is a title-specific baseline. Leave additional disk space for updates where practical; installed files and requirements may change over time. Valve’s Steam Subscriber Agreement says Valve may automatically update content and that system requirements may change.
For example, the Steam listing for Throne and Liberty lists 63 GB of available storage for both its minimum and recommended specifications, and says persistent internet is required. The listing also warns that requirements can change. Those figures apply to that game’s listing, not to MMOs generally. The Lord of the Rings Online has its own separate requirements; use the page for the game you intend to play.

2. Find out what playing requires beyond the download
Downloading game files does not mean the game supports offline play or that its servers will always be available. Check the listing for a persistent internet requirement, then look for any separate publisher account, third-party terms, or anti-cheat software the game requires. A game-specific end-user license agreement may add conditions beyond Steam’s general terms.
Valve’s Steam Subscriber Agreement states, “The Content and Services are licensed, not sold.” It also says a Steam account is required and that a Steam client and internet connection may be required. The precise access conditions depend on the individual game, so check its listing and linked terms before installing—especially if you do not want to create or link another account.

The Throne and Liberty listing, for instance, discloses third-party terms and anti-cheat. The Lord of the Rings Online listing requires a separate Standing Stone Games account. These are title-specific examples, not requirements shared by every MMO.
3. Work out what the game may cost over time
Check the listing and the game’s terms for the initial price, optional in-game purchases, subscriptions, expansions, character slots, or paid account benefits. If there is a subscription, find out what it pays for and what happens to access or progression when it ends.

“Free to play” does not mean that every feature or item is free. Steam says free-to-play games on Steam can be downloaded without a subscription or credit card, and players are not required to buy from the Steam Store to play and progress. Some Steam community features are restricted for limited accounts, and support for in-game purchases is handled by the game’s own support department.
The Lord of the Rings Online listing describes free online play with no monthly fees while also displaying in-game purchases and requiring a separate account. Check the current terms for the MMO you are considering rather than assuming this example’s model applies to another game.

4. Read reviews for current service, not just the headline score
Steam shows recent and lifetime review scores separately. According to Valve’s Steamworks documentation on user reviews, the recent score covers the past 30 days, while the lifetime score reflects the product’s history. Only reviews from Steam purchases count toward the review score, though other reviews may still appear. Early Access reviews remain marked after full release unless their authors update them, and Steam chooses prominent reviews from recent, helpful reviews.

Best Value
- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
- Server stability, queues, or access problems.
- Performance, bugs, and whether updates have helped or worsened them.
- Monetization complaints, including claims about pay-to-win mechanics.
- Customer support or problems linking a publisher account.
Separate launch-era complaints from current ones, and consider whether a review describes the game itself, a temporary outage, or a business practice that has since changed. A review score cannot tell you whether the servers will be healthy when you log in.

If the MMO is in Early Access, decide whether you would be satisfied with the game in its present work-in-progress state. Steam’s Early Access guidance advises buyers to assess the current game, inspect screenshots and trailers for its present state, and read the developer’s plan.
Steam says it adds a notice to a game’s store page if an Early Access title has had no developer update and no “update” event for more than 12 months. Treat that notice as a reason to investigate the development history; it does not, by itself, prove development has stopped.

Steam’s general guidance says Valve will generally refund a game when you request it within 14 days of purchase and have played for less than two hours. Online, offline, and shared-library playtime all count toward the limit. Steam says you can still submit a request outside those conditions for review, but an exception is not guaranteed. Check Steam’s Common Refund Questions for the current process. Rules may differ under local law; Steam provides a separate page on statutory withdrawal rights for EU and UK customers, and this general guidance is not jurisdiction-specific legal advice.
