Halide gives you a more explicitly manual camera workflow on iPhones it supports, with listed controls for shutter speed, ISO and white balance, plus RAW capture and processing options. Apple’s built-in Camera app is simpler for everyday shooting, and its manual capabilities are broader on supported hardware than many comparisons suggest: Apple says iPhone 18 Pro models can manually set aperture, shutter speed and white balance and use a histogram. The better fit depends on your iPhone, the controls you want and whether you prefer a dedicated app—not on a proven claim that either app always takes better photos.
Which app gives you more control?
For a dedicated manual workflow, Halide is the clearer choice: its App Store listing names shutter speed, ISO and white balance controls. Apple Camera remains the most direct option for taking photos with the built-in app, and it includes useful focus, exposure and flash controls. On iPhone 18 Pro models, Apple documents manual aperture, shutter speed and white balance controls, as well as a histogram, in its built-in Camera app.

- Process Zero: a capture option Halide describes as using reduced computational processing.
- Photographic Looks: looks that can be applied during the app’s workflow.
- Tone Fusion: a slider for adjusting shadows and highlights.

What Apple Camera is good for
Apple Camera keeps shooting in the iPhone’s built-in camera workflow. Apple’s standard guide documents focus and exposure lock, manual flash selection and the ability to preserve some settings. Apple also cautions that not all controls are available in all camera modes.

For iPhone 18 Pro users, Apple’s advanced guide changes the comparison: the built-in app offers manual aperture, shutter speed and white balance, plus a histogram. These controls are explicitly scoped to that model family in Apple’s guide and should not be assumed to exist on other iPhones.
