The milestone marks Koraput’s manufacturing contribution; it does not mean all 2,000 engines were the same model, nor does the announcement mean the planned higher annual output has already been reached.
What HAL Koraput announced
At the 6 October 2026 event, Singh witnessed delivery of the 2,000th aero-engine from HAL’s Koraput division. The Ministry of Defence describes Koraput’s propulsion-manufacturing contribution as spanning six decades. Its event preview the day before described it as nearly six decades.

The Ministry paired the milestone with two production-capacity plans: an increase for AL-31FP engines and a second production line for Shakti engines. Both figures are planned annual capacities, not reported production already achieved. The announced investments and intended applications are distinct:
| Engine programme | Announced capacity plan | Investment stated by the Ministry | Requirement identified |
|---|---|---|---|
| AL-31FP | Increase annual capacity from 30 to 50 engines | ₹335 crore | AL-31FP engines for Su-30MKI aircraft |
| Shakti | Second line intended to take capacity up to 100 engines annually | ₹218 crore | Indigenous helicopter platforms including Dhruv and Prachand |
These are separate engine programmes and their capacities should not be added or treated as interchangeable. The announcement does not give a detailed delivery schedule for either expansion. The Shakti announcement also does not provide technical specifications for the engine.

What the AL-31FP figures mean for the Su-30MKI
The Ministry announced in September 2024 a contract with HAL for 240 AL-31FP engines for Su-30MKI aircraft, to be manufactured at Koraput. The contract establishes HAL’s manufacturing role for that order; it does not establish that the AL-31FP design is indigenous. Domestic manufacture and indigenous design are different claims.
The 2026 capacity increase is a planned expansion from 30 to 50 engines per year, according to the Ministry. It is not evidence that Koraput is already producing 50 annually, and the available announcement does not specify how the increased capacity aligns with the 240-engine contract’s delivery timetable.

Why Singh framed the milestone as an engine ecosystem
Singh’s argument about indigenous capability went beyond assembly. In his 6 October 2026 speech at HAL Koraput, he said: “क्योंकि एक Engine Ecosystem केवल एक Assembly Line से नहीं बनता।” An English translation is: “Because an engine ecosystem is not made from an assembly line alone.” He pointed to the broader requirements of propulsion capability, including materials, design, processes, testing facilities, manufacturing and maintenance.

The Ministry also announced a programme for an indigenous high-thrust engine, with investment of about ₹5,000 crore. The event release does not specify its technical configuration, design or readiness milestones, so the investment figure should not be read as evidence that such an engine is already developed or in production.

What the milestone does—and does not—show
- It shows: HAL Koraput has delivered its 2,000th aero-engine, a manufacturing milestone that the Ministry places within six decades of propulsion work.
- It shows planned expansion: the Ministry has announced higher annual capacity targets for AL-31FP and Shakti production, with stated investments for each.
- It does not show: that the new capacities are already operating at their targets, that every engine delivered at Koraput was one model, or that India has achieved complete indigenous aero-engine capability.
- It does not establish: that the AL-31FP is an indigenous design; the cited contract concerns manufacturing for the Su-30MKI at Koraput.
