A Mercedes-Benz VLE prototype photographed during testing may have a hybrid powertrain, but Mercedes-Benz has not confirmed that interpretation. The spy-shot clues reported by Carscoops—a conventional grille, two rear-quarter flaps and an apparent exhaust muffler—suggest combustion assistance. They do not establish the engine, specifications or production plans.
What the Mercedes VLE spy shots appear to show
Carscoops reports that the Mercedes VLE caught testing has a conventional radiator grille, a flap on one rear quarter opposite the charging flap, and what appears to be an exhaust muffler. Taken together, those details are consistent with a combustion-assisted vehicle and have led to speculation that this could be a Mercedes VLE hybrid. They are visual clues, not a powertrain announcement.

The report floats a 1.5-liter inline-four as a possibility, but that engine has not been confirmed. The prototype’s output, battery size, electric-only range, fuel economy, price, trim and market availability are likewise unknown. It is not yet established whether the photographed vehicle is a production-intent hybrid VLE.

Mercedes-Benz introduced the VLE as an all-electric passenger vehicle, not a conventional sedan limousine. Its planned range of configurations is meant to serve families and leisure users as well as VIP shuttle operators, with up to eight seats. The electric VLE had its world premiere on March 10, 2026, according to Mercedes-Benz Media.

Mercedes-Benz Group described the announced electric model this way: “Bringing the best of two worlds together, the all-electric VLE combines limousine-like driving behaviour with MPV-like (multi-purpose vehicle) versatility.” That statement concerns the electric VLE; it does not confirm the configuration of the spy-shot prototype.

What is known about the electric VLE’s performance
Carscoops reports two electric launch versions: a VLE300 rated at 272 hp and a VLE400 rated at 409 hp. It also reports a 0-to-60-mph time of 6.4 seconds for the VLE400. These are reported figures for electric versions, not specifications for the unconfirmed prototype.
MotorTrend describes the VLE300 and VLE400 4Matic and estimates around 360 miles of U.S. range, while noting in its March 2026 article that the EPA figure had not yet been tested. That estimate should not be treated as an EPA rating or as a range figure for a hybrid.

Mercedes-Benz Group also described a development journey from Stuttgart to Rome covering 1,100 kilometres with two 15-minute charging stops. That is a manufacturer-reported test journey, not a general range claim for every VLE.

Carscoops expects a debut in early 2027 and deliveries in the second half of that year. Those dates are the publication’s forecast, not a schedule announced by Mercedes-Benz. Until the automaker confirms a powertrain and timing, the hybrid VLE remains a possibility suggested by spy photos.

Don’t confuse the VLE with the planned VLS
Mercedes-Benz has also described a more luxurious VLS, including a Mercedes-Maybach version focused on passenger space and the rear-seat experience. It is a distinct model in the company’s portfolio plan, not another name for the VLE prototype.
