Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Choose H.264 when compatibility is your priority; choose H.265 when your streaming platform accepts it, your encoder supports it, and you want better compression efficiency at a given bitrate or file size. For YouTube Live, both codecs are currently accepted over RTMP/RTMPS, and YouTube recommends lower bitrates for H.265 than H.264 at matching resolutions and frame rates. Twitch is different: NVIDIA describes H.265 support there as a closed beta for Enhanced Broadcasting, not a generally available option for every streamer.
What changes when you choose H.264 or H.265?
H.264 (AVC) and H.265 (HEVC) are video compression codecs. A codec affects how an encoder represents video before sending it to a platform or saving it to a file. H.265 is generally more compression-efficient: at a given bitrate or file size, it can deliver better quality than H.264. That is an efficiency advantage, not a guarantee of better-looking video. The result also depends on content complexity, encoder implementation, settings, and what the platform does after receiving the stream.

H.264 remains the compatibility-first choice. OBS describes it as broadly supported and playable on nearly every device or software; its guide says it is the only codec supported by most streaming services. Read that as a broad generalization, not a current rule for every platform: YouTube accepts more codecs, and platform support can change.

Can you stream H.265 to YouTube Live?
Yes. YouTube’s current live encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS ingest. Its recommended bitrate table sets lower rates for H.265 and AV1 than for H.264 at equivalent resolution and frame rate. The examples below are YouTube recommendations, not universal settings for other services or a promise that a particular connection will remain stable.

| Stream output | AV1 or H.265 recommended bitrate | H.264 recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1440p at 60 fps | 24 Mbps | 34 Mbps |
| 4K at 60 fps | 35 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
These figures come from YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance, accessed in 2026. Check the current YouTube live settings, bitrates, and resolutions before configuring a stream. Pick a bitrate your upload connection can sustain consistently, then test it before relying on it for a live broadcast. YouTube says it automatically transcodes live streams into output formats so viewers on different devices and networks can watch; that downstream conversion does not remove the need to meet YouTube’s ingest requirements.
HDR on YouTube
YouTube identifies HEVC as its HDR codec in this guidance and says AV1 is not supported for HDR there. If HDR is a requirement, verify the full capture-to-viewer path—including encoder, stream settings, and destination support—instead of assuming that selecting H.265 alone makes a stream HDR.
Does Twitch support H.265?
Do not assume that a standard Twitch stream can use H.265. NVIDIA’s published account says, “Twitch supports HEVC (H.265) in the Enhanced Broadcasting closed beta.” That is a qualified, limited-availability feature, not evidence of general H.265 ingest for every Twitch streamer. NVIDIA also claims “25% improved efficiency and quality over H.264” for the feature; treat that as NVIDIA’s claim about the beta, not a guaranteed result for an individual stream.

OBS notes that Twitch transcoding availability is tiered and availability-dependent in its transcoding guide. That guide is dated 2021, so check Twitch’s current policies and the availability of options on your account rather than relying on it as a current guarantee. For NVIDIA’s beta qualification, see its Twitch Enhanced Broadcast HEVC announcement.
Should you use H.264 or H.265 in OBS?
Start by checking the destination’s current ingest rules, then confirm that your OBS installation and hardware offer the codec and encoding mode you need. OBS says H.264 is its default and broadly supported. OBS supports HEVC encoding only through hardware encoders, including NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF, Intel QSV, and Apple VideoToolbox. A computer having a GPU does not by itself establish that it has a compatible HEVC encoder: support depends on the device, encoder generation, drivers, operating system, and OBS configuration.
Check your encoder and workload
Hardware encoding uses a specialized component to move work off the CPU. OBS says hardware encoders generally provide good quality with minimal performance impact, but older generations may deliver lower quality at the same bitrate. Check the options actually available on your computer and current OBS version, and confirm that your platform accepts the selected codec before going live. OBS’s hardware encoding guide describes encoder support and its platform-specific qualifications.

There are also configuration differences between devices. OBS documents Apple Silicon support for H.264 streaming and HEVC recording, while its Intel Mac VideoToolbox streaming guidance recommends x264 because that configuration lacks the required constant-bitrate support. Treat these as device-specific notes, not a blanket rule for every Mac or every version. Consult the current OBS audio and video formats guide and test the actual setup.
Set bitrate and keyframes for the destination
For YouTube Live, its encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval; it says not to exceed four seconds. Use YouTube’s codec-specific bitrate recommendation for your output resolution and frame rate, then lower it if your connection cannot maintain it reliably. Do not carry YouTube’s H.265 bitrate figures over to Twitch or another service without that service’s current guidance.
- Confirm the platform accepts the codec and stream protocol you plan to use.
- In OBS, choose an available encoder that supports the intended codec; for HEVC, OBS requires a hardware encoder.
- For YouTube, configure CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, keeping the interval at or below four seconds.
- Choose a bitrate that fits both YouTube’s recommendation for the selected codec and resolution and your stable upload capacity.
- Run a private or otherwise low-risk test and check for dropped frames, platform warnings, and playback on the devices your audience uses.
Is H.265 better for viewers?
Not automatically. Compression efficiency can help a stream fit within a lower bitrate, but viewers only benefit if the delivery platform and playback path handle the format. YouTube says it transcodes live streams for different devices and networks, which can broaden viewing compatibility after a successful ingest. Other services may have different ingest and transcoding behavior. OBS’s compatibility description makes H.264 the safer starting point where support is uncertain.

For Apple-device delivery through HLS, Apple’s authoring specification allows H.264/AVC, HEVC/H.265, Dolby Vision, or AV1, with format-specific container requirements. It identifies fragmented MP4 or MPEG transport streams for H.264 and fragmented MP4 for HEVC, and advises compatibility variants within its profile and level limits. Those are HLS authoring considerations; they do not establish what a particular live platform accepts as ingest. See Apple’s HLS authoring specification for Apple devices for the applicable delivery requirements.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Should recordings use the same codec as your live stream?
No. Local recording and live ingest are separate choices. For recordings, OBS recommends the best-quality hardware encoder available and gives this order: AV1, then HEVC, then H.264. That recommendation concerns OBS recording, not a universal live-stream ranking.
OBS recommends MKV as a resilient default recording container because an interrupted recording is less likely to be lost; OBS can remux it afterward. Fragmented MP4 or MOV may suit upload and editing compatibility. Direct MP4 or MOV recording can be vulnerable if the recording is interrupted before finalization. Choose a container for the recording workflow rather than assuming the live platform’s codec requirements dictate it.

Common codec problems and fixes
- The platform rejects the stream: the codec or protocol may not be accepted for that destination or account. Recheck its current ingest requirements and switch to H.264 if broad compatibility is the priority.
- OBS does not offer HEVC: OBS supports HEVC encoding through hardware encoders only. Check the specific hardware, drivers, operating system, and encoder options; a GPU alone does not guarantee support.
- The stream buffers or drops frames: the configured bitrate may exceed stable upload capacity, or the encoder may not be keeping up. Test at a sustainable bitrate and use the destination’s recommendations rather than assuming H.265 automatically fixes connection problems.
- The stream looks worse than expected: codec efficiency is not a quality guarantee. Review resolution, frame rate, bitrate, encoder implementation, and platform transcoding, and compare results in a controlled test.
- HDR does not appear as intended: verify that the complete path supports HDR. YouTube’s cited guidance identifies HEVC for HDR and excludes AV1 for HDR; encoder selection alone does not establish that the rest of the configuration is correct.
- A recording is unreadable after an interruption: direct MP4/MOV can be vulnerable before finalization. For future recordings, consider OBS’s recommended MKV workflow and remux when needed.
