H.264 Explained: What AVC Means for Streaming and Video Files

H.264 and AVC are names for the same video-coding standard. Here’s how it differs from MP4 and AAC, and why it still matters for streaming compatibility.

H.264, also called AVC, is a video-coding standard: it describes how moving images are compressed into video data. It is not a file format such as MP4, and it does not specify the audio codec. H.264 remains useful to understand because it is an accepted video encoding in Apple’s HLS authoring guidance, including for some content where backward compatibility matters.

What is H.264?

H.264 is a standard for encoding and decoding video. It is formally known as ITU-T Recommendation H.264, titled “Advanced video coding for generic audiovisual services,” and is identical to ISO/IEC 14496-10. The standard was developed jointly by ITU-T’s Video Coding Experts Group and ISO/IEC’s Moving Picture Experts Group; Fraunhofer HHI says its first version was finalized in May 2003. ITU-T’s H.264 record and Fraunhofer HHI’s overview describe that history.

In practical terms, an encoder uses H.264 rules to represent video more compactly than an uncompressed sequence of images. A compatible decoder reconstructs the pictures for playback. The standard was designed for higher compression of moving pictures across applications including Internet streaming, broadcasting, digital storage, and videoconferencing, and for use across varied network environments. That purpose does not mean every H.264 file will have the same size or visual quality: those depend on encoding choices and the source material.

What does AVC mean? Is H.264 the same as AVC?

AVC means Advanced Video Coding. H.264 and AVC are names for the same jointly standardized video-coding technology. You may see “H.264,” “AVC,” or “H.264/AVC” in encoder menus, delivery specifications, and technical documents. The paired wording makes the relationship explicit; it does not mean that a video contains two separate codecs.

H.264 is also associated with the MPEG-4 family: its ISO/IEC designation is 14496-10. That association should not be confused with MPEG-4 Part 2, a different video-coding standard. When a service or device specifies a codec, follow the exact requirement rather than relying on a broad label such as “MPEG-4.”

How H.264 differs from MP4 and AAC

A media file can involve several distinct choices. H.264/AVC is the video codec; a container organizes and packages media tracks and related information; an audio codec encodes sound. The fact that these components are often used together does not make them interchangeable.

Term What it describes Example role in a file
H.264 / AVC Video-coding standard Encodes the picture track
MP4 Container format family Packages media tracks and file information
AAC Audio codec Encodes the sound track

The separation is reflected in IEC TS 62592:2012, whose title describes an MP4 file format with AVC video and AAC audio. So a specification asking for an “MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio” is naming a container and two codecs, not three competing file formats. An MP4 extension alone does not tell you which video or audio codec is inside.

Why H.264 still appears in streaming guidance

Compatibility is one reason H.264 remains relevant. Apple’s HLS authoring specification lists H.264/AVC among the video encodings allowed by its guidance and says some content should use H.264 for backward compatibility. The same specification names other encoding choices, so H.264 is not the only option for HLS or streaming generally.

For a particular stream or export, use the target service’s current delivery requirements and consider which devices and software need to play it. If backward compatibility is important, H.264 may be an appropriate choice where the service accepts it. If a service specifies another encoding, or the target platform has different requirements, follow that specification instead. The cited guidance does not establish one codec as universally best or provide a quantified performance comparison.

What is the current H.264 standard version?

As of October 2026, the ITU-T recommendation record lists H.264 version 16, approved in June 2026, as in force. Version 15, approved in August 2024, is listed as superseded. The record also gives May 2003 as the first edition’s approval date. These dates describe the standard’s publication and status; a newer edition date is not, by itself, a measure of image quality, compression efficiency, or compatibility. Check the ITU-T record for the current edition status.

H.264 and 24/7 YouTube video

H.264 is a video format choice, not a service that keeps a channel live. If you want to run uploaded video as a continuous YouTube live stream, StreamNeo is a separate cloud service: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Its cloud playback means a computer at home does not need to remain on. StreamNeo accepts uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. It is for YouTube streams of uploaded video, not camera broadcasts. See StreamNeo for details, or start the first free day without a card.
