H.264 Codec Settings for YouTube Live Streaming: Bitrate, Keyframes, and More

YouTube’s H.264 live recommendations include CBR, a two-second keyframe interval and bitrate targets from 360p through 4K. Here’s how to choose settings and test them.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a typical H.264 stream to YouTube Live, use RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval. Set the video bitrate to YouTube’s recommendation for the resolution and frame rate you’re sending, then confirm your upload connection can sustain the total stream bitrate with headroom. For example, YouTube recommends 17 Mbps for 1080p60 and 14 Mbps for 1080p30 H.264.

Recommended H.264 settings at a glance

  • Protocol: RTMPS, YouTube’s recommended secure extension of RTMP.
  • Rate control: CBR.
  • Keyframe interval: 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds.
  • Frame rate: Up to 60 fps under YouTube’s general encoder guidance.
  • Video bitrate: Use YouTube’s recommended value for your ingest resolution and frame rate, provided your connection can sustain it.
  • Audio: AAC or MP3; stereo guidance is 44.1 kHz at 128 kbps.

These are YouTube’s published live encoder recommendations; the pages cited here do not display publication or revision dates, so check the current settings before a time-sensitive event. YouTube live encoder settings

H.264 bitrate by resolution and frame rate

The table shows YouTube’s published H.264 minimum and recommended bitrates in Mbps. Choose the recommended rate when your upload connection can reliably support it. The minimum is not a guarantee that every type of content will look equally good.

Ingest resolution / frame rate Minimum (Mbps) Recommended (Mbps)
2160p (4K) at 60 fps 14 50

How to choose a bitrate your connection can handle

Your upload connection must carry the video bitrate plus audio and other stream overhead. YouTube advises leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom and warns that other devices or users sharing the connection can reduce the bandwidth available to the encoder. Run an upload speed test on the connection you will use for the event, and choose a resolution, frame rate, and bitrate that it can sustain reliably. YouTube streaming tips

  • If your connection cannot reliably sustain the recommended bitrate, reduce the resolution or frame rate and use the corresponding row in YouTube’s table.
  • Do not treat the listed minimum as the preferred target simply because it is lower; it may constrain quality, especially for detailed or fast-moving scenes.
  • Assess the actual outbound connection, not just the internet plan’s advertised speed. A shared network can be slower or less consistent during a broadcast.

Keyframe interval, CBR, and protocol

Use a two-second keyframe interval

YouTube Help’s encoder guidance says: “Keyframe frequency: Recommended 2 seconds Do not exceed 4 seconds.” Set the interval to two seconds where your encoder exposes the setting. A four-second interval is the maximum, not the recommended target. YouTube encoder settings

Choose CBR for a live stream

YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR). CBR helps keep the stream’s output rate consistent, which makes it easier to plan for the available upload bandwidth. Pair the selected bitrate with the 20% network headroom YouTube recommends rather than setting the encoder to consume the full measured upload rate.

Prefer RTMPS

YouTube lists RTMP and RTMPS as live protocols and recommends RTMPS, the secure extension of RTMP. If your encoder offers both and supports YouTube’s RTMPS ingest, use RTMPS. YouTube live encoder settings

Other encoder settings for H.264 SDR

YouTube’s general guidance lists these video settings: square pixels, progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame, and CABAC. For SDR video, it lists Rec. 709 color and 8-bit depth. Encoder interfaces use different labels, so match the underlying setting rather than assuming every program presents the same menu name.

For audio, YouTube lists AAC or MP3. Its stereo guidance is 44.1 kHz sampling and 128 kbps. For 5.1 audio over RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube lists AAC only, at 48 kHz and 384 kbps. Use the audio format and channel layout your production actually needs.

H.264 is not YouTube’s HDR recommendation

If you intend to stream HDR, do not assume the SDR H.264 settings above are the right path. YouTube’s general encoder guidance recommends H.265 (HEVC) for HDR and says AV1 is not supported for HDR. H.264 is the guidance covered here for SDR streaming. YouTube encoder settings

Latency and 4K streaming

YouTube says 4K/2160 live streams cannot use its low-latency optimization and are set to normal latency. For other streams, lower latency may help audience interaction, but YouTube notes it can increase playback buffering. Choose the latency mode with the trade-off between interaction and reliable playback in mind. YouTube encoder settings · YouTube live stream management

Preflight: test the stream before the event

YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and movement, then watching stream health and messages during the event. Use this checklist before going live:

  1. Check the connection: Run an upload speed test on the network and connection you plan to use. Account for other people and devices sharing it, and retain YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom.
  2. Verify encoder output: Confirm the protocol, resolution, frame rate, CBR bitrate, and two-second keyframe interval. Check that the audio format and sample rate match your production.
  3. Use a representative test: Include the kind of movement and audio the real event will contain; a static test image alone may not reveal how the stream behaves with active content.
  4. Check the Live Control Room preview: Confirm the incoming stream appears as expected before the event begins.
  5. Monitor while live: Watch YouTube’s stream health and on-screen messages, and respond if they indicate a connection or ingest problem.

This checklist condenses YouTube’s published testing and monitoring advice; it is not a claim of independent testing. YouTube streaming tips · YouTube encoder settings

Common problems and fixes

YouTube reports an unstable connection or dropped frames

The outbound connection may not sustain the selected stream rate, or competing network use may be reducing available upload bandwidth. Test the connection, reduce the bitrate by selecting a lower resolution or frame rate from YouTube’s table, and leave the recommended headroom. YouTube warns that a connectivity disruption can break a stream.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The stream looks poor despite meeting the minimum bitrate

The minimum value is not the recommended target or a guarantee of consistent quality. If your network allows, use the recommended rate for the chosen resolution and frame rate. If it does not, lower the resolution or frame rate and use that row’s recommendation instead of forcing a high-quality output over an unreliable connection.

The encoder does not show the same setting names

Encoder interfaces vary. Look for equivalent controls for rate control, keyframe interval, bitrate, scan type, pixel aspect, and codec profile options. If a control is unavailable, consult that encoder’s documentation; YouTube’s guidance establishes the target values, not the exact location of settings in every encoder.

A 4K stream cannot use low latency

This is a YouTube limitation, not necessarily an encoder fault: 2160p streams are set to normal latency. If lower latency is essential, consider a supported lower resolution and test its playback behavior before the event.

Copyright and stream readiness

Correct codec settings do not grant permission to use the audio or video you broadcast. Use content you own or have permission to stream, and review YouTube’s current live-stream rules and channel requirements in the YouTube Help guidance before an event. The technical encoder recommendations above do not determine whether particular content complies with YouTube policy.
