Epic’s current PC requirements list the GTX 960 as a recommended video card, placing the GTX 1060 above that named model tier. But a requirements list is not a frame-rate guarantee, and it does not establish that the card will deliver high-refresh competitive performance or Epic-quality visuals.
What Fortnite’s requirements say about the GTX 1060
Epic lists an Nvidia GTX 960, AMD R9 280, or equivalent DX11 card as recommended for Fortnite. Its recommended system memory is 16 GB, with 2 GB of video memory listed. Epic’s separate Epic-quality preset calls for an Nvidia RTX 3070, AMD Radeon RX 6700 XT, or equivalent, and 8 GB or more of VRAM. The GTX 1060 is therefore a more defensible fit for ordinary settings than for the Epic-quality preset. Epic’s PC requirements caution that a machine that only meets minimum requirements may run the game, but probably not at the highest settings.

Those specifications are compatibility and configuration guidance, not measured performance. They do not tell you how many frames per second a GTX 1060 will produce in a particular match, or whether it will meet a particular monitor’s refresh rate.
What changes the experience on a GTX 1060?
3 GB and 6 GB card variants
The GTX 1060 was sold with different amounts of video memory, including 3 GB and 6 GB versions. The requirements comparison alone cannot predict how those variants perform in a specific Fortnite build. If you are considering a used card, verify the exact memory capacity and model rather than relying on the name “GTX 1060” by itself.

Resolution, settings, and rendering mode
Resolution and graphics settings affect how much work the GPU must do. Fortnite’s Performance rendering mode—shown as “Performance – Lower Graphical Fidelity”—is an option when smoother play matters more than visual detail. Epic says the mode can help less powerful hardware maintain a smoother frame rate. Its illustrative results for Performance Mode were from laptops using integrated graphics, not GTX 1060 cards, so they should not be treated as a 1060 benchmark. Epic’s Performance Mode instructions explain how to enable it.
CPU, memory, and storage
The graphics card is only one part of the system. A slower CPU or insufficient system memory can limit the overall experience, and Epic lists 16 GB of RAM as recommended. For older machines, Epic also suggests using an SSD or having at least 6 GB of RAM to reduce hitches and stutters. These are general support suggestions, not a guaranteed performance increase for a GTX 1060 system. Epic’s performance troubleshooting guidance provides additional steps.

Can a GTX 1060 handle Epic-quality visuals or high-refresh play?
The available official specifications do not support a confident claim that a GTX 1060 will deliver Epic-quality visuals or consistently satisfy a high-refresh target. Epic names an RTX 3070-class GPU or equivalent for its Epic-quality preset, substantially above the GTX 960 tier in its ordinary recommended requirements. That is a useful distinction between settings targets, but it is not a direct benchmark comparison between the cards.

Why an exact FPS estimate would be misleading
Epic’s recommended GTX 960 is not an FPS estimate for the GTX 1060. A historical PC Gamer Fortnite settings and benchmark article included a GTX 1060 6 GB test card, but it does not establish performance in the current Fortnite release. No controlled, current-release GTX 1060 result is established here, so quoting a frame-rate number would imply more certainty than the evidence supports. PC Gamer’s historical benchmark article is useful as a record of past testing, not a current performance promise.
Check power requirements before installing a GTX 1060
If you are installing or buying a GTX 1060 6 GB Founders Edition, NVIDIA’s user guide specifies a minimum 400 W power supply and one 6-pin PCIe supplementary power connector. These specifications apply to that reference card; partner cards can differ, so check the exact model’s manufacturer documentation and your power supply before installation. NVIDIA’s GTX 1060 user guide contains the reference-card requirements.
Quick Recap
Practical verdict
- Already own a GTX 1060: It is a plausible card for Fortnite at lower or ordinary settings. Try Performance Mode if you prioritize smoother play over visual fidelity.
- Expecting Epic-quality settings or a guaranteed high-refresh result: The published requirements do not establish that outcome for this card.
- Buying or installing one: Confirm whether it is the 3 GB or 6 GB model, check the rest of the system, and verify the exact card’s power and connector requirements.
