Reports published October 6–7, 2026 described an unofficial project that appeared to make Grand Theft Auto V playable in a browser. The project was reportedly unavailable within hours. Its implementation, creators, use of AI and disappearance have not been independently established, so the episode is evidence of a reported experiment—not proof that AI has made game porting easy or that this specific project was ruled illegal.
What was reported about the browser version?
Gizmodo’s October 6, 2026 report said a playable version of GTA V had appeared in a web browser, but the site was no longer available when the story was prepared. The reporter could not confirm claims that it remained accessible through an archive. The report connected the project to leaked GTA V source code, but did not document a technical audit of the browser build.

Tom’s Hardware reported that the site became inaccessible within hours. It described a period when visitors saw Cloudflare Error 1014, followed by a replacement page; the reason for the outage was unclear. Neither report established that Rockstar or Take-Two took the site down.

Did AI really port GTA V to WebAssembly?
Alex St. Louis, identified by Tom’s Hardware as founder of Wonder Interactive, posted: “GTA 5 has been ported ported to WebAssembly using AI. We live in the wildest timeline.” That is an attributed claim, not an independently verified account of the build. The reporting did not confirm who developed the project, what work AI performed, or how much of the implementation depended on AI. Gizmodo explicitly questioned how St. Louis knew the details.
WebAssembly can let code run in a browser, but that fact alone does not establish that an entire commercial game has been ported, how it works, or whether AI made the work straightforward. No technical demonstration or audit in the cited reports settles those questions. The reports also do not establish a measured performance result, user count or verified project size.

How is a browser port different from cloud game streaming?
These approaches can both put a game in a browser window, but the game runs in different places. Tom’s Hardware’s comparison of browser ports and services such as GeForce NOW describes the distinction; it is not a benchmark of the reported GTA V project.
| Factor | Browser port running locally | Cloud game streaming |
|---|---|---|
| Where the game runs | Game assets load into the browser, and most processing happens on the player’s device. | The game runs on remote servers; the service streams video and audio to the player. |
| Input delay | Local execution can avoid some network streaming latency. | Controls and streamed output travel between the player and remote servers, adding network-dependent delay. |
| Image quality | Does not depend on streaming video compression in the same way. | Stream compression and connection quality can affect image quality. |
| Device demands | Limited by local processing power, available memory and browser/device compatibility. | Less dependent on the device running the game, but dependent on a suitable connection and the service. |
| Files and authorization | Depends on how the project obtains and uses game files; browser execution does not establish permission. | Depends on the service’s authorization and terms; streaming is not itself proof of authorization. |
“Playable in a browser” therefore does not necessarily mean that a game is streamed from a company’s servers—or that it will work well on every device. The technical model and the project’s authorization are separate questions.

What does Rockstar say about unauthorized GTA online services?
Rockstar Games Support’s article, last updated April 22, 2024, identifies GTA V’s Grand Theft Auto Online and roleplay or community servers supported through the Cfx.re Platform Server (FXServer) as authorized GTA multiplayer services. It states: “Any other online Grand Theft Auto service is unauthorized and your use of such a service would violate the license for your software.” Rockstar says developers or hosts of other online services risk legal action by Take-Two, and players may be banned from Rockstar services. Read Rockstar’s support guidance.
That published position concerns online services. It is not a court ruling about this reported browser project or a blanket legal determination about every kind of port. The cited reporting does not establish an adjudication specific to the project, and it does not confirm the reason the site went offline.

What can other browser-game projects tell us?
A separate open-source project, reVC Web, documents a browser implementation of Vice City using WebAssembly. Its documentation says users must provide their own installed game files and that the project distributes no game data; it describes educational, documentation and modding purposes. See the reVC Web project documentation.
That is one project’s design, not evidence that every browser port is authorized or lawful. A separate Tom’s Hardware report dated December 26, 2025 quoted an Ebrand demand sent on Take-Two’s behalf concerning DOS Zone’s browser-based Vice City project. The reported demand objected to use of the title and to functionality involving user data and keys from original game copies. It concerned a different game project and was a rights-holder demand, not a court judgment about the reported GTA V build.

More broadly, a 2023 Harvard Journal of Sports and Entertainment Law article considered a hypothetical AI-generated game and emphasized that legal outcomes depend on what was copied and how the work was used. Its authors wrote: “That difference alone makes this a ‘hard case’ and the application of existing case law to these new, AI-specific facts difficult to predict.” The article does not decide the legal status of this GTA V project.
Quick Recap
What should players take away?
- The browser project was reported, but the available reporting does not independently document its code, authorship or AI workflow.
- Its brief availability and reported disappearance do not establish who was responsible for the outage.
- Browser execution, cloud streaming and authorization are distinct issues. A game running in a browser does not by itself show that its files or service are authorized.
- Owning an authorized copy of Grand Theft Auto V does not, on the evidence here, establish permission to port, host or redistribute the game.
