Its announced release date has also shifted: from 2025, to May 26, 2026, and then to November 19, 2026. Those are separate milestones: the first describes how long the project has existed, the second when work scaled up, and the third the latest announced launch date.
When did GTA 6 development begin?
Rob Nelson, co-studio head at Rockstar North, told French outlet TroisCouleurs that “The game’s been in development since 2015, so the idea is gestating for a long time.” He added that “The majority of the team really started rolling on it after Red Dead Redemption 2 released in 2018.” GamesRadar reported Nelson’s comments.

The statements describe different stages, not a contradiction. An idea and early development can precede the point when most of a studio’s team shifts onto a project. Nelson’s account does not establish that every team member worked continuously on GTA VI from 2015.

Rockstar and Take-Two first announced the game for 2025 in December 2023. On May 2, 2025, Take-Two said the expected Fall 2025 launch was planned for May 26, 2026. CEO Strauss Zelnick said the company supported Rockstar taking more time to realize its creative vision. Take-Two’s announcement gives that stated rationale for the change; it is not a full account of every internal scheduling decision.

Take-Two’s November 6, 2025 fiscal second-quarter release lists November 19, 2026, as the launch date. That is the latest date in the cited official materials here.
What Rockstar has said about long development cycles
Nelson’s comments point to two considerations in a long project: developing the game over an extended period and choosing material that will still fit when it is finished. Discussing topical ideas, he said: “Because by the time we write it and cast it and shoot it, and implement it, whatever it is – it could be gone, it could change, it could be dated.” He said Rockstar tries to choose ideas that suit the story and fictional world.

This helps explain a creative challenge of a long production, but it does not account for every date change. The public statements cited here do not establish that the pandemic, budget, staffing, scope, management decisions, or an alleged reboot caused a particular delay. Beyond Take-Two’s statement that additional time would support Rockstar’s creative vision, a complete internal explanation for each schedule change has not been made public in these materials.
What is known about the game and its launch
Setting and protagonists
The December 2023 announcement places GTA VI in Leonida, a state that includes Vice City. In its May 2025 Trailer 2 release, Take-Two described Jason and Lucia as a pair who must rely on each other after an easy score goes wrong, drawing them into a criminal conspiracy across Leonida. The Trailer 2 announcement gives that story premise.

Platforms
The announced launch platforms in the official materials cited here are PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar has not announced a PC version in those materials; that is not evidence that a PC version will never be released.
Editions and boxed copies
Take-Two’s June 2026 pre-order announcement lists a $79.99 Standard Edition and a $99.99 Ultimate Edition. It says digital pre-load begins November 12, 2026, and the physical version will be available starting November 12 to support pre-loading. A boxed copy is not a disc: Rockstar Support says the physical package contains a download code. The Standard Edition can be upgraded digitally to Ultimate through the PlayStation or Microsoft store. Rockstar also warns that region restrictions tied to platform accounts can affect activation and recommends buying from a retailer in the country associated with the account.
