GTA V: Los Santos and Southern California
Rockstar describes GTA V as set in a reimagined present-day Southern California, with Los Santos at its center and a wider surrounding region. The setting is a fictionalized version of a recognizable real-world area.

GTA VI: Vice City and the state of Leonida
GTA VI takes place in Leonida, a fictional state whose best-known location is Vice City. Rockstar’s first trailer announcement says the game reaches Vice City “and beyond,” so the announced setting is broader than the city alone. Rockstar calls it the series’ “biggest, most immersive evolution yet”; that is publisher promotional language, not an independently measured comparison.

The announcements support comparing the regions’ identities, but they do not establish which game has the larger map. Rockstar’s 2012 description of GTA V as the largest game world it had created at that time is not a like-for-like measurement against GTA VI.

How is the story different?
GTA V: three criminals and dangerous heists
The official synopsis introduces a young street hustler, a retired bank robber and a dangerous criminal. Their different personalities and circumstances converge around dangerous heists and the challenge of surviving in a city where they cannot fully trust one another.
GTA VI: Jason and Lucia’s partnership under pressure
Rockstar’s published synopsis follows Jason and Lucia after an easy score goes wrong. They become caught in a criminal conspiracy stretching across Leonida and are forced to rely on each other if they want to make it out alive. The premise establishes a two-person central partnership, but it does not confirm how the full story unfolds.

Does GTA 6 have a different tone from GTA 5?
The official pitches suggest different emphases, rather than proving a definitive tonal change across either complete game. Rockstar presents GTA V through its three contrasting criminals, distrust and heists. For GTA VI, the marketing contrasts a sunny place with its dark side and puts Jason and Lucia’s reliance on one another at the center.
It is reasonable to describe the new pitch as more focused on a central pair, or to say it sets bright surroundings against criminal danger. Calling the full game darker, lighter or more intimate as a settled fact would go further than the published premise supports.

What platforms and release date has Rockstar announced for GTA 6?
As of October 7, 2026, Rockstar lists GTA VI for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with a November 19, 2026 release date. Those details are time-sensitive; consult Rockstar’s official game page for the current listing.
In its June 24, 2026 announcement, Rockstar said the physical package contains a download code inside the box, rather than a game disc, and was to be available for pre-loading on November 12. See the announcement for those release details.
