Nathan Drake is the quick-witted, risk-taking treasure hunter at the heart of PlayStation’s Uncharted games. Actor Nolan North gives him more than a steady stream of jokes: his performance helps make Drake feel like a person whose breezy confidence can coexist with danger, a complicated past and a longing for a settled life.
Who is Nathan Drake?
PlayStation describes Drake as a “roguish explorer” drawn to “adventure, fortune and glory.” Beneath his carefree manner, though, is a man with a complicated past who must reckon with what he is willing to sacrifice for happiness. He is not simply a fearless adventurer: the tension between chasing the next mystery and protecting a life outside the hunt is central to his character. How Drake changes across the games
From El Dorado to Shambhala
In Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, a clue connected to Sir Francis Drake leads Nathan into a search for El Dorado. The next game sends him after Marco Polo’s lost fleet and the Himalayan city of Shambhala; Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception takes him and his mentor, Victor “Sully” Sullivan, into a desert search. By Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, Drake has retired from globe-trotting and is living a comparatively ordinary life with Elena. His brother Sam’s return pulls him back toward treasure hunting, bringing the conflict between domestic stability and adventure into the foreground. Naughty Dog writer Josh Scherr describes Drake as knowledgeable about history but also an adrenaline-seeker, restless and looking for the next big thing. What Nolan North brings to the role
North’s Drake sounds conversational, alert and funny, but the performance is not just a delivery system for wisecracks. His timing lets humor emerge naturally from stressful situations; shifts in tone and reaction can also make room for fear, frustration or vulnerability. The result is a character who can be entertaining without seeming untouched by the risks he takes.
Naughty Dog credits North with capturing Drake’s essence from the series’ beginning and continuing to develop the performance through Uncharted 4. That is the studio’s own assessment, rather than a neutral critical verdict, but it reflects how closely the character’s identity is tied to North’s work across the games. Why performance capture matters
Drake’s personality comes through in movement and expression as well as spoken lines. Naughty Dog describes a production process in which actors performed dialogue and movement, with animators and artists refining the captured material. The studio developed a way to capture motion and dialogue at the same time; for Uncharted 4, it also used facial capture. These techniques help connect North’s delivery to Drake’s physical reactions and expressions rather than leaving the character’s personality in the voice alone. North’s performance is collaborative, not simply improvised
North has emphasized the importance of the script and the collaboration around it. Speaking to PlayStation, he compared writer Amy Hennig’s script to “a strong tree” from which the actors “just branch.” He also cautioned that too much ad-libbing without a strong story structure “becomes a mess.” His comments suggest a useful distinction: spontaneity and comic timing contribute to Drake’s natural feel, but they work within a carefully shaped story rather than replacing it. For the original trilogy, The Nathan Drake Collection includes the single-player campaigns for Drake’s Fortune, Among Thieves and Drake’s Deception. For the later chapter, PlayStation identifies Uncharted 4 and Uncharted: The Lost Legacy as part of the Legacy of Thieves Collection.
