Yes—GTA 6 lets you control Jason or Lucia, but switching is not confirmed to be available at any moment. Rockstar’s Rob Nelson says it depends on the mission and story: some missions allow free switching, some lock you to a protagonist, and some automatically hand control from one character to the other. No confirmed button or menu sequence has been published in the sources available.
How character switching works in GTA 6
Rockstar North Head of Development and Co-Studio Head Rob Nelson described switching as context-sensitive. In the English translation of a Famitsu interview, he said: “In some missions you can switch freely, but just like GTA V, when we want you to experience a scene from the perspective of a particular character, we restrict switching.” The translation notes that its wording may differ slightly from the original Japanese.

That means switching is a way to move between Jason and Lucia when the game allows it, not a guaranteed option in every situation. Nelson said story progression can restrict it; in an early mission set in a high-rise housing complex, for example, the player is locked to Jason.

You choose who to control
In some missions, you can freely switch between Jason and Lucia. Nelson also described a mission near the end of the footage in which the player can alternate between them. The interview does not specify how the player makes that selection.

The story locks you to one character
A mission may keep you with the protagonist whose perspective fits the scene. In Nelson’s high-rise example, that character is Jason. Restrictions can also depend on how far the story has progressed.
The game hands control over automatically
Nelson described a bank getaway that begins with the player controlling Jason as he fires at pursuing police from a car Lucia is driving. During the sequence, control shifts to Lucia at the wheel, while Jason and Raul shoot from the back seat. This is a scripted handoff, not a freely chosen switch at that moment.

Can Jason and Lucia be together or act separately?
Both options are part of the descriptions from Rockstar and preview coverage. Nelson said the player can bring the protagonists together, while the character not under direct control follows their own schedule around the hideout. The Famitsu translation also describes a convenience-store robbery that can be attempted alone or with Lucia invited along.

PC Gamer’s account of a Dazed preview offers another example: Jason drives on the highway, and the player switches to Lucia in the passenger seat to use her in-game phone. GamesRadar has also reported scenarios with Jason driving while Lucia rides as passenger and fires shots. These examples show that switching can affect what you do within a shared situation, not only which protagonist you control while they are apart.

What button switches characters?
No specific controller button or menu sequence is confirmed by the sources cited here. Rockstar’s media page lists the game’s trailers and extended look but does not publish switching controls. The Famitsu interview explains when switching is available, not the input used to do it. Do not rely on GTA V’s controls or fan guesses as confirmed GTA 6 instructions; check the released game’s control settings or an official guide for the final input.
