Buy GTAV Enhanced on PC if your hardware meets Rockstar’s current requirements. On PS5 or Xbox Series X|S, use the native current-generation edition for the latest graphics and GTA Online features, but check your existing PS4 or digital Xbox One license before paying again. PC players can still use Legacy, while older-console owners may remain on PS4 or Xbox One versions when hardware, compatibility or friends’ editions require it.
GTA 5 editions at a glance
Grand Theft Auto V now exists as separate editions on PC and consoles. The right purchase depends less on the game’s name than on the hardware you own, the license already attached to your account, the version your friends use and whether you care about current-generation GTA Online features.

Rockstar’s PC listing presents Enhanced and Legacy together, but they are separate installs and game environments. Do not assume that owning one automatically means every feature, save or online session is shared with the other.
What should a new PC buyer choose?
Choose Enhanced when your computer passes the current requirements
Enhanced is the default choice for a new PC purchase. It brings the current-generation visual upgrades and newer GTA Online systems to PC, and existing PC owners were offered the upgrade at no additional charge. Rockstar’s requirements page lists separate Enhanced and Legacy specifications and warns that downloadable content and programming changes can alter requirements. Check that live page immediately before buying or installing; a component list copied from an older article may no longer be reliable.

The Rockstar Games Store listing says Legacy is included for hardware that does not meet Enhanced’s minimum requirements. That makes the PC purchase more flexible than a simple either-or choice: a lower-spec computer can use Legacy, while a qualifying system can install Enhanced. Storage, operating-system support, graphics drivers and launcher requirements should all be checked in the current listing, not inferred from the game’s age.
Use Legacy for compatibility, not because it is a cheaper tier
Legacy is useful when Enhanced will not run acceptably, when a mod or peripheral setup depends on the older environment, or when a group of players has deliberately stayed on that version. Rockstar has said Legacy continues to be supported, but support and compatibility can change. If you switch later, treat the move as a migration decision rather than simply changing a graphics preset.
Story Mode versus GTA Online on PC
Both PC editions are sold as GTAV packages that include Story Mode and GTA Online according to Rockstar’s store presentation. Enhanced’s advantage is not a different campaign; it is the newer technical foundation and current-generation online content. If you only want Story Mode and your computer cannot meet Enhanced requirements, Legacy remains a practical way to play the campaign.
Can you upgrade a PS4 or Xbox One copy for free?
Rockstar Support’s June 18, 2026 instructions describe a free upgrade route for eligible PS4 owners and digital Xbox One owners. Check the platform store while signed in to the account that owns the game before purchasing a second copy.

PlayStation 4 disc or digital copy
An eligible PS4 owner can claim the PS5 version through the described offer. If your PS4 copy is on a disc, the disc must be inserted in the PS5 whenever ownership verification is required. A PS5 Digital Edition cannot read a PS4 disc, so a disc-based license cannot be used on that hardware without a digital entitlement.
Xbox One digital copy
Digital Xbox One owners should check the Series X|S store listing from the owning Microsoft account. The support article specifically excludes physical Xbox One copies from the digital Series upgrade route. A physical Xbox One disc may still be playable on a compatible Series console through backward compatibility, but that is not the same as obtaining the native Series edition.
Why checking first prevents a duplicate purchase
Upgrade eligibility depends on the license type, account and platform family. A store page can show a purchase button even when an account is entitled to a download, so open the product page while signed in and look for the upgrade or download option. Keep the original disc if the offer requires it for verification.
What does the current-generation version actually improve?
Rockstar’s March 2022 announcement for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S lists technical capabilities including graphics modes targeting up to 4K resolution and up to 60 frames per second, HDR options, ray tracing, improved texture quality, faster loading and 3D audio. “Up to” describes a published ceiling, not an independent benchmark or a guarantee that every mode reaches those figures in every scene. Your display, console model, selected graphics mode and update state affect the result.

Enhanced on PC brings features that were previously available only on the current-generation consoles. The practical differences are faster-feeling loading, higher-fidelity assets and access to online systems introduced for the newer versions. PC players still need hardware capable of sustaining their chosen settings; the existence of a feature does not guarantee a fixed frame rate.
GTA Online content can be edition-specific
Rockstar’s title-update notes, including version 1.73 updated October 1, 2026, identify some content and Career Progress features as limited to PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC Enhanced. Players on PS4, Xbox One or PC Legacy may therefore see a different menu, progression tracker or activity list even when the underlying game world looks familiar.
Before joining friends, confirm which edition they launch. Native PS5 and Series players generally match with that current-generation edition, while someone running the PS4 or Xbox One release through backward compatibility remains in the older version’s ecosystem. The same distinction applies to PC Enhanced and Legacy.

Migration is the most important issue to resolve before changing editions. Rockstar’s support guidance distinguishes money earned through gameplay from GTA$ purchased with real money.

“Same console family” means a PlayStation-to-PlayStation or Xbox-to-Xbox move, not a cross-family transfer. PC migration has its own rules, so a player moving from Legacy to Enhanced should read the confirmation screen rather than treating the operation as a normal launcher update. Migration may be irreversible for the profile involved; make sure the destination account is the one you intend to use.
Migration checklist
- Sign in to the Rockstar account linked to the GTA Online profile.
- Confirm whether the destination is PS5, Xbox Series X|S or PC Enhanced, and identify the edition your friends use.
- Separate earned GTA$ from purchased GTA$ in your records; the transfer rules are different.
- Read the migration warning, especially the PC Legacy-to-Enhanced notice about unspent GTA$.
- Capture your character, rank, properties and balances for your own records before confirming.
Is GTA+ required, and which editions support it?
GTA+ is optional. You do not need membership for Story Mode or ordinary access to GTA Online. Rockstar’s December 1, 2025 support information lists GTA+ support on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC Enhanced. Benefits are not available on PS4, Xbox One or PC Legacy.
If you subscribe on a supported platform, benefits apply to the supported edition and account specified by Rockstar; they should not be assumed to appear in an older-console or Legacy session. Rockstar’s September 19, 2025 troubleshooting article also treats missing benefits as an account or entitlement issue, not as a reason to buy the game again.

You are buying GTA V on PC for the first time
Check Enhanced’s current requirements first. If the computer qualifies, install Enhanced for the current graphics and online feature set. If it does not, use the included Legacy version rather than buying a different product.

You already own GTA V on PC
Look in the Rockstar Games Launcher or your authorized PC store for the Enhanced entitlement before paying again. Existing PC owners were offered Enhanced free, and Legacy remains available for compatibility.
You own a PS4 digital copy and now have a PS5
Open the PS5 store while signed in to the owning account and check the June 18, 2026 upgrade offer. Claim the native PS5 edition if eligible, then migrate GTA Online only after reviewing currency rules.
You own a PS4 disc and have a PS5 with a disc drive
The disc can verify ownership under the support instructions. You must keep it available whenever the console requires validation.

You own a physical Xbox One copy and bought an Xbox Series console
Do not expect the described free digital upgrade. The support article excludes physical Xbox One copies from that route. Check backward-compatible play with the disc or purchase the native Series edition if you need its current-generation features.
Your friends play on older consoles
Match their edition before migrating. A current-generation purchase does not automatically place you in the PS4, Xbox One or PC Legacy session group.
You mainly want Story Mode
Choose the edition your hardware supports. Enhanced improves presentation, but the campaign itself is not a separate story. Legacy remains suitable for a PC that cannot run Enhanced, and the older console editions remain playable on their original hardware.
Buying and installation pitfalls to avoid
- Buying before checking entitlements: an eligible PS4 or digital Xbox One owner may already have access to the newer edition.
- Confusing backward compatibility with an upgrade: running the old console release on a new console does not provide every native current-generation feature.
- Using stale PC requirements: Rockstar says requirements can change with downloadable content and programming updates.
- Assuming every 4K/60 claim is guaranteed: Rockstar’s figures are capability ceilings from its announcement, not independent tests for every mode.
- Ignoring edition-specific online content: Career Progress and other update features can be restricted to PS5, Series X|S and PC Enhanced.
- Migrating without checking GTA$: earned and purchased currency follow different rules, and PC Legacy-to-Enhanced migration has an unspent-balance warning.
- Expecting GTA+ on an older edition: membership benefits are limited to PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC Enhanced.
A practical decision sequence
- Identify your hardware: PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PS4 or Xbox One.
- Identify your license: PC ownership, PS4 digital or disc, Xbox One digital or physical.
- Check the live store and support page: verify upgrade eligibility, region, edition and current price before checkout.
- Compare your priorities: current-generation visuals, GTA Online features, compatibility with friends, or simply access to Story Mode.
- Review migration consequences: especially purchased GTA$, PC balances and edition-specific online content.
- Install the matching version: Enhanced or native current-generation when supported; Legacy or the older console release when compatibility requires it.
For current prices, regional packaging, stock and exact system requirements, use the store page for your country and Rockstar’s live support documentation. Those details can change independently of the game’s edition names.
