To find out what a game publisher collects, identify the exact game and region, read its current privacy notice, then check privacy controls in four places: the game, the publisher account, your console or app platform, and your device. The notice should explain data categories, purposes, recipients, retention and request methods. If it does not answer a retention or deletion question, ask the publisher through its privacy center or support channel. Platform and publisher policies are separate, and the rights available to you depend on your country and the service you use.
What a game publisher might collect
There is no universal list. A publisher may collect only the information needed for an offline title, or it may process account, gameplay, device, network, purchase, communication and diagnostic data for an online service. Treat the categories below as a checklist of terms to look for, not proof that any particular game collects all of them.

Policies often describe these categories with examples rather than an exhaustive inventory. For instance, Konami’s game notice lists operating-system version, IP address, purchase records, play data, logs, consent or activity data, diagnostics, and selections such as language or region. That does not establish that every Konami title collects every item; the notice and the service you use control the answer.

A publisher can have different notices for mobile games, websites, live events, merchandise, or separate countries. A policy for a company’s website may not govern a console game, and a Canadian notice may not describe processing in the United States. Record the title, publisher, platform, online features you use and your country before you begin.

- Open an official entry point. Use the game’s store listing, the publisher’s website, your account page, or an in-game Legal, Privacy or Terms link. Avoid relying on a search result that could point to an old or unrelated product.
- Confirm scope. Check that the notice names the game, service family or account system you actually use. Look for separate mobile, console, regional or child-account terms.
- Note the date. Record the policy’s effective or last-updated date. A current date does not guarantee that every setting has moved with it, so check the live controls as well.
- Save a copy or link. Keeping the version you reviewed helps you explain a later request, especially if the text changes.
The Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada advises players to use a game’s privacy policy to learn what information is gathered, where it goes, how it is used and whom to contact. Its guidance is general information, not a determination of the rights that apply in every country.
Read the notice as a set of questions
Long policies become more useful when you extract the same facts for every data category. Search within the page for terms such as “collect,” “use,” “share,” “service providers,” “retain,” “delete,” “access,” “correct,” “opt out,” “cookies,” “microphone” and “location.”

If the notice says data is retained “as long as necessary” without explaining what that means for a closed account, do not assume deletion is complete. Ask the publisher what remains, for how long, and whether backups or fraud-prevention records are excluded.
Check both the publisher and the platform
Using a console account, app store, social login or connected device creates more than one privacy relationship. Microsoft’s privacy statement explains that an Xbox game publisher can receive an Xbox user identifier, gamertag, limited account information, communications data, gameplay sessions, network presence, time spent, rankings, profiles, friends lists and content submitted in the game. It also states that third-party publishers have their own independent relationship with players and their own policies. Therefore, read the publisher’s notice and the platform’s statement instead of treating either as a complete record.
Check the platform notice for account identifiers, purchases, friends and communications, achievement or presence data, and information shared with a game. Then check the publisher notice for gameplay telemetry, moderation, marketing and linked-account processing. A platform setting may govern what the platform shares, while a publisher setting governs what the publisher uses after receiving it.

Review privacy controls at four layers
1. In-game controls
Open Settings, Account, Privacy, Communication, Social, Safety or Data options. Look for voice and text chat, friend requests, invitations, cross-play, personalized offers, analytics, diagnostic sharing, location, camera, microphone and contacts. Disable a permission only after checking whether it is required for a feature you intend to use. A control may affect future collection but not erase data already stored.
2. Publisher-account controls
Sign in to the publisher’s account or privacy center. Review communication subscriptions, data-sharing choices, social visibility, linked accounts, connected devices, advertising preferences and downloadable account data. Ubisoft says its Privacy Center can be used to download account data, update information, close an account and manage data-sharing, communications and social preferences. Its mobile-game guidance also points players to privacy settings inside the game, so check both places.
3. Console, computer or app-platform controls
Review the platform’s account privacy, communications, advertising, voice and activity-sharing settings. Check family or child-account restrictions separately because they can override a game’s own choices. If you use a social login, inspect that provider’s connected-app permissions and remove links you no longer need.
4. Device permissions
On a phone, tablet, PC or console, inspect permissions for the game and its companion apps. Camera, microphone, location, contacts, notifications, photos and local-network access should match the features you use. Browser cookies and similar technologies may also be controlled in browser or device settings; Epic Games notes that these automatic-collection technologies can be managed there. Recheck permissions after major updates or reinstallations.
Settings can move or change after an update. Make a note of the controls you changed and revisit them after a significant game, platform or operating-system update.

Request a copy, correction, deletion or preference change
What you can demand, and how quickly a publisher must respond, depends on your jurisdiction, account type and the publisher’s process. The policy should name the available route. Do not send identity documents or sensitive information to an address that is not listed in an official privacy notice.
- Choose the narrowest request that solves the problem. Ask for access to the personal data associated with the account, correction of a specific error, deletion or account closure, or a particular marketing or data-sharing preference.
- Use the official channel. This may be a privacy center, data-request page, in-game support option, email address or web form. Ubisoft advertises a facility to request and download personal data associated with an account. Konami’s US notice describes access, deletion and correction routes; confirm that the US notice applies to you before using them.
- Identify the account without oversharing. Provide the account email, user ID, platform and game, along with the minimum information needed to verify ownership. Follow the publisher’s identity-verification instructions.
- State the scope and date. Specify whether you want gameplay records, communications, purchases, linked-account data or all personal data, and identify the relevant account or character names.
- Ask about consequences. Before deletion, ask whether progress, virtual items, subscriptions, cross-progression or linked services will be lost and whether some records must remain for legal, security or fraud-prevention reasons.
- Keep evidence. Save the request, confirmation number, policy version and response. If the publisher does not answer, the policy or your local regulator may explain escalation options.
Closing an account is not automatically the same as erasing every record. The Canadian privacy commissioner specifically warns that some game policies omit retention or deletion provisions. Ask directly when the notice is silent.
What published policies illustrate
Konami: detailed examples, regional qualification
Konami’s game privacy notice gives concrete examples of device, network, purchase, play, log, diagnostics, consent and preference data. Its games notice index and regional text should be checked to make sure the version covers your title and location. The US notice describes access, deletion and correction requests and lists contact routes; those procedures are not automatically universal worldwide.
Ubisoft: account tools plus in-game settings
Ubisoft’s data-protection page describes a Privacy Center for downloading account data, updating information, closing an account and managing sharing, communications and social preferences. Its official Privacy policy 5.0 PDF directs mobile-game users to privacy settings in the game. Verify the current controls in the live account and title rather than relying on a screenshot or older menu path.
Microsoft and Xbox: platform data is a separate layer
Microsoft’s privacy statement explains the information that can flow through Xbox online games and connected apps and emphasizes that third-party publishers have separate policies. Use it to understand the platform relationship, then read the game publisher’s notice for its own processing.

Epic Games: usage telemetry and automatic technologies
Epic Games’ privacy policy describes usage information such as the game used, duration, attempts, progression, results, crash reports and interactions with its services. It also discusses cookies and other automatic-collection technologies and the access rights described in the policy. Browser or device controls may affect those technologies, but they do not replace an account request.
Supercell and Niantic: service-specific scope and dates
Supercell’s policy is effective March 11, 2026. It says collection depends on the services a player uses and directs data-protection questions or requests to support features inside a Supercell game. Niantic’s policy is effective June 2, 2026 and covers games, apps, websites, merchandise, live events and promotions. Check which of those services you actually use before assuming the entire scope applies.
Nintendo Canada: country-specific wording
Nintendo’s Canadian privacy policy describes collection, use, sharing, protection and access, correction or deletion. Its device examples include model, serial number, operating system, settings and performance, identifiers, internet-service provider and IP address. It is a Canadian policy; players elsewhere should locate the notice for their own region.

The available official policies do not establish a standardized score or a defensible overall ranking of publishers. A comparison is meaningful only when the same axes and the same region are used.

Common problems and practical fixes
The policy does not name your game
Look for a title-specific notice in the store listing, account portal or in-game legal menu. If the publisher operates several services, ask support which notice governs your account and save the answer.
The policy lists data but not retention
Send a focused question: which categories remain after account closure, for how long, whether backups are included, and which records are kept for legal, security or fraud-prevention reasons. Do not infer an answer from a generic “necessary” statement.
You cannot find a sharing or analytics switch
Check all four control layers, search the settings for “privacy,” “data,” “communications,” “personalization” and “diagnostics,” and review the help center for your game version. Some choices are managed by the platform or device rather than the game.

Ask for an export first and obtain written confirmation of what deletion will affect. Linked accounts, subscriptions, virtual items and cross-progression may not be recoverable after closure.
You receive a request for excessive identity information
Use only the official privacy channel and ask why each requested item is necessary. Never email passwords, authentication codes or payment-card numbers unless the publisher’s verified process explicitly requires a safe alternative.
Keep the review current
Recheck the policy and settings when you install a major expansion, enable voice or social features, link a new account, move to another country, change platform, or receive a significant game or operating-system update. Keep a short record of the policy date, permissions granted, linked accounts and requests submitted. That record lets you identify which company controls a particular data flow and makes a future access or deletion request precise.
For an individual legal assessment, consult the privacy authority or professional adviser in your jurisdiction. The practical method remains the same: identify the exact service, map each data category and recipient, adjust controls at every layer, and use the publisher’s documented request route when settings are not enough.
