Some coverage attributed the disappearance to Take-Two Interactive, but the reviewed reporting found no official confirmation that Take-Two or Rockstar ordered the site removed. What happened to PlayGTA5.com?
On October 6, 2026, Beebom reported that the full game had briefly become playable in a browser at PlayGTA5.com. Its report described story mode and free roam, with keyboard, mouse, controller and mobile touch controls, and said the site later showed a “Thanks for Playing!” message. These are details reported by the outlet, not facts confirmed by Rockstar or Take-Two. Beebom’s report also cited an approximately 700 MB asset figure; that should not be mistaken for a verified game size.

GTA BOOM likewise reported that the site had been available for a few hours before disappearing. Its disappearance is better supported than any specific explanation for why it happened. The reporting does not establish a player count, so “viral” should not be read as a verified measure of its audience.

Did Take-Two or Rockstar take the browser port down?
That has not been officially confirmed in the reviewed reporting. Windows Report explicitly noted that neither Rockstar nor Take-Two had confirmed ordering the site’s removal. Some reports attributed the takedown to Take-Two, but that attribution remains unconfirmed. What Rockstar’s policy says about unofficial ports
Rockstar’s policy on posting copyrighted material, last updated January 10, 2025, says the company generally does not object to certain non-commercial fan uses but reserves the right to remove copyrighted material. It lists “Promoting Modifications / Ports” among examples that may result in a takedown notice, including ports of existing game content to a platform or game engine where it is not officially available. The policy provides context, but does not show that it was invoked against PlayGTA5.com.

This sentence appears in Rockstar Games Customer Support’s published policy on posting copyrighted Rockstar Games material. Rockstar also publishes guidance about unauthorized GTA online services, but that guidance concerns multiplayer servers and is not a legal determination about this reported single-player browser port.
Is it safe or authorized to play a mirror?
The available reporting describes the browser project as unofficial. It does not establish that any mirror or archived copy is safe, authorized, or equivalent to the site that briefly appeared. Avoid treating copies or downloads claiming to restore the port as a verified way to play. The reports also do not say that visitors were banned or otherwise sanctioned; Rockstar’s general online suspension policy is not evidence that such action occurred in this case. Where to play Grand Theft Auto V instead
If you want to play GTA V, use an official listing for your platform and region. Check the publisher’s or console maker’s storefront directly for the current edition, price, and availability; those details can differ by region and change over time.
