If a GStreamer YouTube Live stream stops when a video file ends, first check whether the pipeline received an end-of-stream (EOS) event. A finite file naturally runs out of data; that is not, by itself, a caps-negotiation failure. If the broadcast should continue, supply the next media or loop the current file, and handle EOS accordingly. Investigate caps separately by comparing the formats negotiated before and after the file boundary.
Why the stream stops at the end of a file
A file source has no more buffers to provide once the file is consumed. GStreamer reports stream completion as EOS, which can propagate through the pipeline and produce a pipeline-level EOS message. Unless the application supplies more input or another continuing source, that input cannot keep a live output going.

For an appsrc pipeline, the application should call gst_app_src_end_of_stream() after it has pushed its intended final buffer or byte. Once appsrc has sent EOS, it cannot accept more buffers until a flushing seek or a transition through READY. See the GStreamer GstAppSrc documentation and the GStreamer design overview.
Diagnose EOS separately from caps negotiation
- Check the bus at the boundary. Record whether the pipeline posts EOS, an error, or both as the file ends. An EOS message indicates that the stream ended; it does not establish a caps error.
- Check appsrc’s EOS call. If you use appsrc, find whether and when the application calls
gst_app_src_end_of_stream(). Call it only when the intended input is actually complete. The GStreamer pipeline manipulation documentation describes sending EOS after the last byte is pushed. - Capture caps on both sides of the boundary. Log the caps on source buffers and immediately before the encoder or muxer for the final frames of one file and the first frames of the next. A caps-negotiation diagnosis needs evidence of the formats involved or a negotiation error in the logs.
- Inspect the YouTube ingest path only if GStreamer keeps running. If the pipeline does not receive EOS and has no caps error, examine its other errors and the YouTube ingest status rather than assuming file completion or caps is the cause. No specific YouTube error is established by the symptoms alone.
Make the pipeline match the intended playback behavior
Stop when the file ends
If ending the broadcast is the intended result, allow the source’s EOS to propagate. For appsrc, signal EOS after its last intended buffer. Do not treat a clean end as a freeze or keep feeding the same appsrc after EOS without the documented reset path.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
Loop the file or advance to another file
If the live broadcast must continue, make the application provide continuing input: loop the file, queue another file, or otherwise supply the next intended media. Choose sequencing based on whether playback should repeat, advance through a playlist, hold, or stop. EOS ends appsrc input until a flushing seek or a transition through READY; design the next-input sequence around that behavior. The available documentation does not determine which file-switching architecture fits a particular pipeline.
Keep downstream raw video in a stable format
If successive files differ in raw video format, dimensions, or rate, downstream elements may need to renegotiate caps. GStreamer documents that negotiation can fail after topology changes and that suitable converter elements commonly resolve incompatible formats. Use the appropriate conversion, scaling, or rate elements for the formats you actually have, and consider a capsfilter to establish a stable format downstream. Set concrete caps only after checking both the source formats and the encoder or muxer requirements; a capsfilter cannot make an incompatible format valid by itself. See the GStreamer pipeline manipulation documentation.

Set and verify appsrc caps
When appsrc’s caps property is used, it must describe a fixed format. The buffers pushed by the application must match those caps; alternatively, leave caps unset where the pipeline is designed to determine them. Do not declare one format while pushing buffers in another.
At a file boundary, compare the caps of the outgoing buffers for the last frame of the first file and the first frame of the next file. If they differ, determine whether your pipeline supports renegotiation at that point or whether you need conversion to a common downstream format. GStreamer describes caps negotiation separately from EOS; confirm a negotiation failure from the bus or debug output instead of inferring it from a stopped picture.

What to collect before changing code
- The complete pipeline description, including source, conversion, encoder, muxer, and sink elements.
- The installed GStreamer version and the relevant plugin versions.
- Bus messages and debug logs from shortly before and after the file boundary.
- The appsrc caps, if set, and the negotiated caps at the source and just before the encoder or muxer for the final and next-file frames.
- The intended behavior at file end: stop, loop, advance, or hold.
Without these details, the symptom alone cannot identify a precise code change or prove that caps negotiation caused the stop. The GStreamer Basic tutorial on streaming is also useful background on the framework’s streaming model.
