Configure YouTube ingest separately from playback
Get the destination details from YouTube
YouTube documents RTMPS as a secure extension of RTMP and directs streamers to get the RTMPS URL and stream key from Live Control Room. The encoder must support RTMPS. Treat those details as destination configuration for the publishing application; a playlist loop does not supply them.
Keep the stream key private. Use the protocol and destination URL YouTube provides for the stream, and confirm that the selected application build and output path can use them. In particular, the existence of GStreamer’s RTMP rtmpsink is not, by itself, evidence that the element supports the RTMPS connection YouTube requires.
Do not assume HLS or DASH follows from a loop
HLS and DASH are distinct ingest integrations with their own segment, manifest, transport, and media-format requirements. They are not extra settings implied by repeating files. YouTube’s HLS guidance specifies 1–4 second segments, TS format, HTTPS POST/PUT, and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments; YouTube notes that HLS has higher latency because it sends video segments rather than a continuous stream. Its developer guidance also specifies M2TS, H.264 or HEVC, AAC audio, and closed GOPs, among other requirements.

YouTube’s DASH documentation has its own manifest and segment rules, including a manifest update period no greater than 60 seconds and a closed GOP size of about two seconds and under eight seconds. Use HLS or DASH only if your chosen encoder path implements the relevant YouTube requirements; do not treat either media player’s looping ability as proof that it does.

Validate the setup before leaving it unattended
- Confirm the media inputs. Check that every file is readable by the intended application, that the playlist or sequential file pattern is complete, and that playback advances through the final item and starts again as expected.
- Confirm the output path. Identify the protocol, URL, stream key, container, and codecs required by your chosen YouTube ingest option. Check support against the precise application version and installed plugins you will deploy.
- Run a full playlist cycle. Watch the transition at the end of the list and the start of the next cycle. Confirm that the outgoing media remains acceptable to the encoder and that playback does not stop at a boundary.
- Test the live connection. Use YouTube Live Control Room to confirm that the intended broadcast receives the stream. Check behavior after a deliberate, controlled connection interruption and determine whether the encoder reconnects, the process needs a restart, or operator intervention is required.
- Plan supervision. Decide how the service starts after a reboot, how a crashed process is detected, where errors are logged, and who responds if ingest or playback stops. Do not infer automatic recovery from either application’s loop feature.
- Check channel obligations. Confirm you have rights to the video and audio, and review YouTube’s current live-stream and monetization policies for your channel. A technically continuous stream does not establish that content is permitted or eligible for monetization.
