You can run a continuous YouTube stream from an old laptop if it can encode your video reliably and the laptop, power, and internet connection stay available. Use a simple OBS scene, start at a modest resolution, and test it at the place where you plan to stream. YouTube’s recommended settings are not a guarantee that an older machine or a particular Indian connection can sustain a stream.
Choose between streaming locally and using the cloud
For prerecorded, low-motion content, an old laptop may be sufficient if a representative test stays stable. A local setup uses the laptop as the encoder, so it must remain powered, awake, connected, and cool. If it overheats, sleeps, loses power, or cannot sustain the connection, a cloud service for prerecorded video is another approach: the service supplies the streaming computer, while you upload the video and configure the YouTube stream.

- Verify your channel and enable live streaming in YouTube Studio. Allow up to 24 hours for initial activation.
- Open Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown for the broadcast into OBS. Keep the key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to your stream.
- Start streaming from OBS and check Live Control Room to confirm YouTube is receiving the signal.
Set up a lightweight OBS stream
Keep the scene simple
Start with one static image or a simple visual and only the audio you need. Avoid animated overlays, multiple moving sources, and unnecessary filters until the laptop passes a basic test. OBS states that CPU needs vary with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity; meeting its basic system requirements does not guarantee that a computer can stream adequately. Its system requirements page also notes Windows 10/11 with a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU, macOS 11 or later with listed graphics support, and Linux/Unix with an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU and X/Wayland, but that page is dated 2021, so verify current compatibility before relying on a particular OS or machine.
Choose a conservative resolution and bitrate
YouTube’s current H.264 encoder guidance, checked in 2026, recommends 4 Mbps for 480p at 30 fps and 8 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps. Its minimums for those settings are 0.4 Mbps and 3 Mbps, respectively. These are platform bitrate figures, not promises that the laptop can encode reliably or that an internet connection can sustain the stream. Start with 480p30 if the machine or upload is constrained, then try 720p30 only after testing. YouTube advises choosing a quality that will result in a reliable stream based on the internet connection.

Use YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions as the source for current settings. The bitrate table does not establish a minimum old-laptop specification, and compatibility alone does not demonstrate encoding capacity.

Measure sustained upload at the streaming location
Check upload speed where the laptop will actually run, preferably at the time of day you expect to stream. A speed test result is a snapshot, not a guarantee of sustained throughput. OBS’s troubleshooting guidance offers using 75% of total upload speed as a starting point for bitrate in that troubleshooting context; treat it as a rule of thumb, not an India-wide target or assurance. Leave headroom for normal variation and other devices using the connection.

If Wi-Fi is unstable, test with Ethernet. OBS warns that Wi-Fi may be unstable for streaming. A Cat 6 cable is a possible option only if both the laptop and router have compatible ports; a cable cannot fix an ISP outage or an inadequate upload connection.
Test before making the broadcast continuous
- In OBS, configure the simple scene, the selected resolution and bitrate, and the YouTube server URL and stream key.
- Start a private or unlisted test using representative content, including similar motion and audio to the planned stream.
- Watch YouTube’s stream health in Live Control Room and OBS’s connection indicator and dropped-frame statistics. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health.
- Let the test run long enough to expose overheating, sleep, power, or connection problems that might not appear immediately.
- If it stays stable, use the tested settings for the intended stream and continue monitoring. If it does not, use the troubleshooting steps below rather than assuming that a published bitrate is achievable on your equipment.
Keep expectations realistic about “continuous” streaming
A laptop stream is continuous only while the encoder, power, and network remain available. Set the operating system so the laptop does not sleep during the broadcast, keep it on reliable power, and ensure ventilation is not obstructed. These precautions cannot guarantee an uninterrupted session: hardware faults, heat, power cuts, and ISP failures remain possible. No specific minimum laptop specification or India-wide upload, data, or power reliability figure is established here, so the local test is essential.

Check your broadband or mobile plan’s data policy rather than assuming a particular allowance or cost.

Having permission to upload a video and being eligible to monetize a channel are separate questions. Before looping music, footage, images, or other material, check that you own it or have the rights and permissions needed for live use. Repeatedly streaming material that is not yours can trigger copyright claims or enforcement; a technically successful stream does not establish permission or monetization eligibility. Review YouTube’s copyright guidance and YouTube channel monetization policies, including reused-content rules, before broadcasting or relying on revenue.
Troubleshoot common failures
