Use GSTR-2B as your main period-wise statement when checking reported input tax credit (ITC) against the relevant sections of GSTR-3B. The GST Portal says taxpayers should use GSTR-2B to take the right ITC in those sections. Then match it to your books and purchase register, check later statements for supplier filings that missed the cut-off, and assess legal eligibility separately.
GSTR-2B is an important reconciliation input, not a ruling that every listed amount is legally claimable. The portal warns that it may not generate every ineligibility scenario, so taxpayers must self-assess. GSTR-2A can help investigate supplier-reported information and specific reporting differences, but the available official guidance does not establish a complete general definition of how it refreshes.

Why an invoice may appear in a different statement period
GSTR-2B is a static, read-only statement generated from information filed by suppliers, ISDs, and import-related systems. Its period is determined by filing cut-offs, not simply by the date printed on an invoice. A supplier or ISD filing received after the applicable cut-off is reflected in the next open GSTR-2B, even if the document has an earlier issue date.
GSTR-2B generation and filing windows
The GST Portal FAQ states that monthly GSTR-2B is generated on the 14th day of the succeeding month. For quarterly recipients, it states that the quarter’s statement is generated on the 14th day of the month after the quarter.

For monthly supplier GSTR-1/1A, the FAQ gives a cut-off window from 00:00 on the 12th of the relevant month to 23:59 on the 11th of the succeeding month. For quarterly supplier filings and GSTR-5/GSTR-6, it gives a window from the 14th to the 13th. These are portal operational details; check the live portal instructions for the period you are reconciling because schedules and return behavior can change.
Information included in GSTR-2B
The FAQ describes GSTR-2B as including supplier or e-commerce operator data filed through GSTR-1/1A/IFF and GSTR-5, ISD data from GSTR-6, and import-of-goods information from ICEGATE, including imports from SEZ units or developers. A discrepancy may therefore reflect a filing-status or cut-off issue rather than an invoice-date error.
How to reconcile GSTR-2B with your books
- Download the statement for the relevant period. Identify whether the taxpayer files monthly or quarterly, and use the corresponding GSTR-2B period.
- Match documents to the purchase register. Compare supplier GSTIN, invoice or debit-note number and date, taxable value, tax amounts, amendments, and credit notes. The portal FAQ describes document-level supplies and amendments in GSTR-2B.
- Check supplier filing timing. If a document is missing, check its filing status and the next open GSTR-2B before treating it as an unexplained difference.
- Investigate unmatched entries. Consider late filing, omission, amendment, duplicate entries, and differences between a portal view and your own book entry. Keep the statement periods consistent when comparing totals.
- Assess the ITC claim independently. Apply eligibility rules and required reversals, avoid claiming credit twice for one document, and account for reverse-charge tax as applicable before finalizing GSTR-3B.
- Keep a period-by-period reconciliation trail. Record the reason for each adjustment so that timing differences and corrections can be followed through later statements.
The portal specifically advises reconciling GSTR-2B with books, avoiding duplicate credit for a document, reversing credit as required under GST law and rules, and paying tax on reverse-charge supplies as applicable. Those checks are separate from simply finding an amount in the statement.

What GSTR-2B does not decide for you
The portal says the “ITC not available” indication in GSTR-2B covers only specified scenarios. Other legal restrictions may not be generated by the system, so a taxpayer must self-assess eligibility under the applicable law. An amount’s appearance as available in GSTR-2B is therefore not, by itself, proof that it can be claimed in the taxpayer’s circumstances.

The GST Portal’s issue-resolution material describes a mismatch between “ITC as per GSTR-2A (ITC accrued)” in a Credit and Liability Statement and the GSTR-2A form. It identifies three reasons in that example:

- The accrued report is monthly, while for a quarterly recipient the form may consolidate the quarter in its final month.
- The report considers submitted invoices, while the form may display both saved and submitted invoices.
- Invoices added after the report’s cut-off may appear only in the form.
For that particular issue, the portal advises comparing the quarter’s accrued ITC with submitted invoices for the quarter. This is a specific troubleshooting case, not a complete description of every way GSTR-2A information may be updated. See the GST Portal’s GSTR-2A known-issues guidance and check the live portal view for the period at hand.
How to interpret a difference between the statements
Before treating a difference as a substantive mismatch, compare like periods and trace the individual document. The statement can differ from your books or another portal view because of cut-off timing, a supplier’s filing status, an amendment, saved versus submitted data, or a duplicate or book-entry issue. Where the reason remains unclear after those checks, preserve the details and resolve the source record through the appropriate filing process.
The GST Portal’s April–June 2024 functionality compilation described automated Form GST DRC-01C intimation when a comparison of GSTR-2B ITC and GSTR-3B ITC claimed crossed a predefined limit; it also said table 4A(3), reverse-charge supplies, was excluded from the computation in that described update. That is a version-specific update, not evidence of the current threshold. Do not infer a present limit from it; consult current portal instructions for the relevant tax period.
