For a small business in India, GST registration, return filing and input tax credit (ITC) depend on more than a single turnover figure. Your State, supplies, registration category and transactions can all affect the answer. Use this guide to understand the basic process, then verify your circumstances against current GST rules and the live GST Portal.
When does a small business need GST registration?
Registration thresholds are based on aggregate turnover, not simply the sales of one shop, product or GST registration. The threshold and any compulsory-registration rule that applies depend on the business’s facts and current notifications.

CBIC FAQ material gives a general ₹20 lakh threshold and discusses special-category States and inter-State supplies. However, some of that guidance is older and should not be treated as a universal current rule. Check current CBIC notifications and the GST Portal for your State, supply type and transaction pattern before deciding that registration is unnecessary. The official FAQ is available at CBIC’s GST FAQ.

Who files GSTR-1, and what does it report?
GSTR-1 is the statement for reporting outward supplies. GST Portal guidance says normal and casual registered taxpayers generally file it, with exceptions that include composition taxpayers and certain specified categories. The portal’s GSTR-1 guide explains who is covered and how filing works.
If GSTR-1 applies to you, a nil period does not by itself remove the filing obligation: the portal guidance says a nil GSTR-1 is required when there is no activity for the period. Check your taxpayer category and the live portal rather than assuming that no sales means no return.

Should you file GSTR-1 monthly or quarterly?
Eligible normal taxpayers may use monthly or quarterly GSTR-1 filing. The GST Portal’s stated QRMP eligibility condition is turnover up to ₹5 crore in the preceding financial year, or expected turnover up to ₹5 crore for a newly registered taxpayer. This is not an unrestricted choice for every business; confirm eligibility and available options on the portal.

| Monthly | For eligible normal taxpayers choosing monthly filing; the guide’s QRMP threshold governs eligibility for the quarterly option. | 11th of the following month | More frequent reporting; may suit businesses that prefer to report invoices monthly. |
| Quarterly | QRMP: turnover up to ₹5 crore in the preceding financial year, or expected turnover up to ₹5 crore for a newly registered taxpayer, subject to the portal’s conditions. | 13th after the quarter ends | Less frequent GSTR-1 filing; may reduce routine filing frequency for an eligible business. |
These are ordinary dates stated in GST Portal guidance, not guarantees that a particular period’s deadline has not changed. Government notifications can extend due dates, so check the live portal for the period you are filing. GSTR-3B is the period return form used in the filing workflow; the portal’s GSTR-1 guidance covers filing cadence and related return steps.

How can you correct or add an item after filing GSTR-1?
GSTR-1A is an optional, one-time facility for a tax period. According to the GST Portal, it becomes available after GSTR-1 is filed or its due date passes, whichever is later, and remains available until GSTR-3B for that period is filed. It can be used to add omitted records or amend reported records.
Changes made through GSTR-1A feed into the supplier’s GSTR-3B. For the recipient, ITC relating to records added or amended in GSTR-1A appears in the next period’s GSTR-2B, according to the portal guide. See GST Portal guidance on GSTR-1A for the facility’s timing and effects.

When can a business claim input tax credit?
ITC is conditional: having a GST invoice does not make every purchase creditable. Before claiming, check that you hold a prescribed tax invoice or other qualifying document, that the purchase relates to the business and eligible taxable activity, and that the credit is not restricted by the law.

- Keep the required invoice or other qualifying document and supporting records.
- Reconcile purchase invoice details with supplier-reported data available to you, and investigate mismatches rather than assuming the credit is available.
- Check whether the expense is blocked from credit, relates to exempt supplies or non-business use, or needs to be apportioned.
- Review payment-related conditions and any applicable reversal requirements.
CBIC’s CGST Rules set out documentary requirements and allocation or reversal provisions. The governing Act may exclude particular transactions. Check the current statutory text for the relevant period; for an unusual or material claim, seek advice from a qualified tax professional.
