A receipt is not automatically a compliant tax invoice. The required details depend on the country, the buyer’s GST/VAT registration status and the kind of transaction. The examples below cover India, Singapore and South Africa; they are not one universal checklist.
What is the difference between a GST invoice and a regular receipt?
| Document | What it primarily shows | Tax significance |
|---|---|---|
| Regular receipt | That a purchase or payment took place, often with the seller, date, items and amount paid. | It may be useful as proof of payment, but do not assume it meets local tax-invoice rules or supports an input-tax claim. |
| GST tax invoice | The supplier, transaction and applicable tax information, with customer details where required. | It is a prescribed tax document. In Singapore, IRAS identifies it as the main document supporting an input-tax claim. |
Some jurisdictions permit simplified documents or exceptions for certain customers, transactions or values. Whether a receipt can serve that purpose depends on the local rules—not on what the document is called by the seller.

What details should a GST invoice include?
There is no single GST invoice format that applies across countries. Start with the tax authority for the country where the supply is made, then check whether the buyer is registered and whether the supply is taxable, exempt, zero-rated or an advance payment. The following official guidance illustrates how the requirements differ.
India: tax invoice fields and exceptions
India’s Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) rules describe a tax invoice that includes the supplier’s name, address and GSTIN; a consecutive serial number unique for the financial year; the issue date; and the recipient’s name, address and GSTIN or UIN when the recipient is registered. It also includes an HSN code for goods or Accounting Code for services, a description, quantity and unit for goods, total supply value, and prescribed tax particulars and other fields. Conditional requirements can apply to an unregistered recipient’s details and the delivery address. See the CBIC GST rules and guidance for the applicable rule and exceptions.

- WRAP-AROUND COVER: Fold the back cover between sets to keep invoices neat and legible
- ROOM FOR CUSTOMIZATION: A blank space at top leaves room for your company stamp; a big savings over custom-printed forms
- CONSECUTIVELY NUMBERED: Large 6-digit numbers in the upper right hand corner help you thumb through orders quickly
CBIC’s FAQ describes an India-specific low-value exception: a registered supplier may omit a tax invoice for a supply below ₹200 to an unregistered recipient if that recipient does not ask for one. If the customer asks, an invoice must be issued; the FAQ also describes a consolidated invoice at the end of the day for such supplies. Confirm that the rule applies to the transaction and remains current before relying on it.
Not every Indian GST document is a tax invoice. For exempt supplies or a supplier paying tax under the composition scheme, CBIC says to issue a bill of supply; it does not show a tax rate and tax amount that cannot be collected. An advance payment uses a distinct receipt voucher, with prescribed information such as the advance amount, applicable tax rate and amount, and place of supply for inter-state supplies. These documents should not be treated as interchangeable.

Singapore: tax invoice for GST-registered customers
Singapore’s Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore (IRAS) says a tax invoice is generally required when the customer is GST-registered, and is to be issued within 30 days from the time of supply. The listed details include the words “Tax Invoice”; supplier name and address; GST registration number; invoice date and identifying number; customer name and address; a description of goods or services; GST rate; amount payable excluding GST; total GST; and total including GST. Exempt, zero-rated or other supplies should be stated separately where applicable. IRAS specifies circumstances in which an invoice need not be issued, including certain supply categories and sales to non-GST-registered customers. See IRAS tax invoice guidance for the conditions and phased InvoiceNow data-transmission requirements.

South Africa: tax invoice information
South Africa’s revenue service (SARS) lists the document wording as “Tax Invoice,” “VAT Invoice” or “Invoice”; supplier name, address and VAT registration number; recipient information and VAT number when the recipient is a vendor; a serial number and issue date; accurate description; quantity or volume; supply value; tax charged; and total consideration. SARS guidance distinguishes full and abridged invoices by value and notes that, in the lowest amount band, a till slip or sales docket indicating VAT charged can verify input tax deducted. The SARS page was last updated on 11 March 2021, so check current South African rules before using its value thresholds. See SARS VAT invoice guidance.

Can a regular receipt be used as a tax invoice?
Only if the applicable country’s rules allow that document for the specific transaction and it contains the required information. A receipt that shows a total payment but omits tax details or required supplier and customer identifiers may not qualify. Singapore’s IRAS calls the tax invoice the main document supporting an input-tax claim; in South Africa, SARS describes a limited lowest-value case where a till slip or sales docket showing VAT charged may verify a deduction. Those are local rules, not a general permission to use any receipt.
Before relying on a receipt, verify the buyer’s registration status, the supply type, any value-based exception and whether the document states the tax charged in the required way. Keep the receipt as evidence of payment even when a separate tax invoice is required.

What to check before issuing or accepting one
- Country: Apply the tax authority’s own terminology and invoice rules; do not copy another country’s fields or thresholds.
- Buyer status: Check whether the customer is GST/VAT registered and whether the rules require their name, address or registration number.
- Supply and payment type: Identify taxable, exempt or zero-rated supplies and any advance payment, since they may require different tax treatment or a different document.
- Transaction record: Confirm that the document identifies the supplier and transaction, gives a clear description and value, and states tax particulars required locally.
- Exceptions and format: Check current rules for simplified documents, low-value transactions, issue deadlines and electronic-invoicing obligations.
A paper invoice book can help a business keep records, but using one does not itself make an invoice compliant. The format—paper or electronic—is separate from whether the required information and local rules have been followed.
