Check the three access requirements first
Nintendo identifies connectivity, an eligible active membership, and Nintendo network status as the key access checks for its classic game libraries. The Genesis collection may be labeled SEGA Mega Drive in some regions; Nintendo’s support pages describe the same regional service family.

- Internet: Connect the console so Nintendo can verify access.
- Membership: The Nintendo Account linked to the selected Switch user must have Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack. Standard Nintendo Switch Online alone does not include the Genesis/Mega Drive library.
- Service status: Check Nintendo’s network status page for posted outages or maintenance.

Work through the fixes in order
- Connect the Switch to the internet. Open the console’s internet settings, connect to a working network, then try launching the SEGA Genesis library again. An initial online launch is required to verify access.
- Verify the account and membership. Make sure you are launching the app as the Switch user linked to the Nintendo Account with an active Expansion Pack membership. If you have multiple users, check the account for the selected user rather than another profile on the console.
- Refresh offline verification. If the library launched successfully before but the console has been offline for more than seven days, reconnect and launch the software again. Nintendo’s support guidance says the initial launch requires internet access, after which play is allowed offline for up to seven days.
- Check for maintenance or an outage. Review Nintendo’s network status page. If a service interruption is posted, retry after it is resolved.
- Install current system software as routine maintenance. On Switch, go to HOME → System Settings → System → System Update. Nintendo’s cited update page lists version 23.0.0, released September 10, 2026. This is a general maintenance check, not a confirmed fix for a Genesis-specific loading bug.
- Look up the exact error code. Search Nintendo Support using the code displayed on screen and follow that code’s instructions. If the steps do not resolve the problem, contact Nintendo Support.

Do you need a special controller, SD card, or repair kit?
No accessory is identified in Nintendo’s access troubleshooting guidance as a fix for a library that will not start. A SEGA Mega Drive Control Pad is an optional gameplay controller: it can affect how a game feels after it loads, but it does not grant membership access or perform online verification. A microSD card, Ethernet adapter, or repair kit is likewise not an established solution to this access problem. Consider hardware troubleshooting only if a displayed error or a diagnosis from Nintendo points to a specific hardware issue.

When to contact Nintendo Support
If the selected user has the required membership, the console is connected, Nintendo reports no relevant interruption, and the library still will not start, follow the support instructions for the exact on-screen error code or contact Nintendo Support. The cited guidance does not identify a particular error code or diagnose an individual console, so the displayed message is the best starting point for escalation.
