If a submitted e-way bill has incorrect invoice, consignment or party details, the GST E-Way Bill System FAQ says you cannot edit the entry: cancel the bill and generate a new one with the correct information. The FAQ specifies cancellation within 24 hours of generation. A wrong or changed vehicle number is different: it is a Part-B transport-detail issue, which the generator or assigned transporter can update while the bill remains valid under current system rules.
Before dispatch or an inspection, identify which kind of error you have. Do not assume every field can be changed, or that updating Part-B will repair an incorrect invoice or an expired bill.

How do I correct a wrong e-way bill?
First compare the submitted bill with the invoice, bill of supply, delivery challan or other applicable transport document. If the incorrect entry is consignment, invoice or party information rather than transport detail, the official FAQ says the submitted bill cannot be edited or corrected. Its stated remedy is to cancel the bill and generate a new one with the correct details.
The GST E-Way Bill System FAQ puts it plainly: “If there is a mistake, incorrect or wrong entry in the e-way bill, then it cannot be edited or corrected. Only option is cancellation of eway bill and generate a new one with correct details.” The FAQ also says cancellation is required within 24 hours from generation. Use the current portal workflow, since screen labels and steps can change, and act promptly.

If the 24-hour window has passed, do not assume the bill can still be cancelled or repaired in the same way. Check the live e-way bill portal and the applicable CGST rules or notifications for your circumstances. The FAQ’s stated cancellation window is not a guarantee that every late correction has a portal remedy.
Which correction route applies?

What should I do if the vehicle number is wrong?
Work out whether the vehicle number was entered incorrectly or the vehicle changed after the bill was generated. The official FAQ describes Part-B as the route for updating transport details, including a change caused by vehicle breakdown or trans-shipment. The generator or the transporter assigned to the bill can make the update. The bill should show the vehicle actually carrying the goods.

Official API guidance says a Part-B vehicle update is allowed only while the e-way bill is within validity. Do not treat a Part-B update as a way to correct unrelated invoice or consignment information, and do not assume it will repair an expired bill. Check the current portal instructions before making the change.

- Road: enter a vehicle number where required, in the format accepted by the portal.
- Rail, air or ship: enter the applicable transport document number.
If the portal rejects a transport field, verify the selected mode and the number against the relevant vehicle or transport document. A missing or invalid transport field is not the same problem as an incorrect invoice entry.

Validity is tied to transport mode and approximate distance. The GST E-Way Bill System FAQ says the validity period starts with the first Part-B transport entry. Because official FAQ versions surfaced with different distance increments, do not rely on a single distance formula without checking the current governing rule and applicable notifications.

CBIC rules address exceptional circumstances and generation of another e-way bill after updating Part-B. Whether that applies depends on the facts and current rules; an expired bill should not be treated as fixable by a routine vehicle update. Check the bill’s displayed validity, the live portal guidance and the applicable CGST rules before continuing movement.

Write down the exact error code and message, then consult the current official error-code list or portal help. The official list includes errors associated with validity lapses and transport data, but a code alone does not establish that every case has the same fix. Avoid guessing at a remedy from a partial message.
What to check before dispatch or an inspection
This operational review can help identify mismatches; it does not guarantee that goods will not be detained or that no penalty will apply.
