Start by identifying the country whose tax rules apply, your business’s GST registration and filing obligations, and any required digital-invoice or reporting system. GST software is jurisdiction-specific: a product that supports one authority or e-invoicing network may not meet another’s rules. Use the relevant tax authority’s current guidance, or ask a qualified local tax or bookkeeping adviser, before comparing products.
What should GST compliance software do?
At a minimum, the software should help you keep the records required for your business, prepare the figures and reports needed for the returns you actually file, and support any required digital reporting or invoice exchange. A generic “GST-ready” label does not establish that a specific edition connects to your tax authority, supports your return type, or meets an e-invoicing mandate.

Build your shortlist around the work you need to complete—not the length of a feature list. For example, the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) advises small businesses to choose software they can understand and operate, that supports recordkeeping and digital reporting, and that is compatible with Standard Business Reporting (SBR). It also recommends considering future needs and compatibility with a registered tax or BAS agent’s systems. ATO guidance on choosing record-keeping software.

- Confirm jurisdiction and obligations. Identify the tax authority, registrations, return types, transaction types and invoice rules that apply to your business. Confirm requirements with the authority or a qualified local adviser.
- Match bookkeeping features to your workflow. Check that the product can capture sales and purchases, invoices, refunds and adjustments, and produce the GST detail reports needed for your return. Consider whether you need inventory, more than one account or business, foreign-currency support, payroll, or collaboration with an accountant. ATO small-business guidance lists these kinds of operational needs and recommends considering how requirements may change as a business grows.
- Verify digital reporting and e-invoicing support. Where a tax authority requires or recognizes a particular connection, check the exact software edition and its current status in the authority’s register or guidance. Confirm whether it sends, receives, or submits the data your business needs; do not infer compatibility from a broad marketing claim.
- Test reconciliation and exception handling. Ask how the software flags missing or mismatched information, handles bulk invoices, failed submissions, amendments and cancellations, and preserves a review trail. If possible, have the provider demonstrate these tasks using a representative workflow.
- Check records, exports and migration. Find out whether transactions and source documents can be exported in usable formats, how documents remain linked to entries, and how records can be retrieved after a cancellation or move to another product. Retention rules vary by jurisdiction.
- Assess security and continuity. Ask about access controls, backups, recovery, support and how your business can retrieve its data if service is interrupted or you leave the provider. A listing on a tax authority’s software register is not, by itself, a guarantee of security or overall product quality.
- Calculate fit and total cost. Compare user and entity limits, accountant compatibility, support, and recurring and transaction-based fees at your expected scale. The cited official guidance identifies relevant selection checks but does not establish comparable current vendor prices, so obtain current quotes and check what each plan includes.
How to evaluate tax-authority connections
Australia: SBR and Peppol eInvoicing
ATO guidance recommends checking that bookkeeping software supports digital reporting and is SBR compatible. For eInvoicing, the ATO describes the exchange of standardized invoice data through the secure Peppol network. Its eInvoicing Ready product register says certified Ready products can send or receive a valid invoice through an Accredited Australian Peppol Service Provider and register a business to the network. Ready+ adds specified best-practice data. Check the listing and the particular product’s capabilities, rather than assuming every plan has the same functions. The ATO notes that free or low-cost products may suit low-volume businesses, while advising businesses to check provider criteria.

Singapore: phased InvoiceNow requirements
IRAS describes InvoiceNow as Singapore’s national Peppol-based e-invoicing network and says GST-registered businesses must submit invoice data using InvoiceNow-Ready solutions in phases. Its published dates include 1 April 2026 for businesses applying for voluntary GST registration on or after that date, and dates from 1 April 2028 through 1 April 2031 for specified existing-business groups by annual supplies. IRAS also says existing registrants notified before 2026 have been told their implementation date from mid-2026, while some other dates will be communicated later. These dates are tied to particular business categories, not a single deadline for every GST-registered business; check current IRAS InvoiceNow requirements for your business’s applicable date.
IRAS’s ASR+ software page lists products by supported tax functions, including GST return submission and InvoiceNow readiness. IRAS says it has performed integration testing of the listed software, but does not warrant other aspects such as security or functionality. Treat the listing as evidence of the stated integration testing—not a complete product endorsement—and evaluate security and features separately.

India: GST e-invoice and the Invoice Registration Portal
India’s official e-invoice guidance describes software that can create prescribed JSON data, work with a billing or accounting system, and support submission to the Invoice Registration Portal. Its account-manager guidance highlights instant and bulk generation, bulk cancellation, integration with return filing and e-way bills, error handling, and data security as selection considerations. See the GST e-invoice account-manager guidance.
The National Informatics Centre says invoice information is transferred from the e-invoice portal to the GST and e-way bill portals in real time, with the stated aims of reducing manual re-entry and enabling return-data population. These are described system benefits; they do not guarantee that every vendor product will deliver a particular result. Read the NIC GST e-Invoice project page alongside the requirements for your own workflow.

What to check before switching software
Before moving, make a list of the records you need to keep, the reports your adviser needs, and the documents that must remain retrievable. Test a sample export and confirm that transaction details and associated source documents can be accessed without relying on the old subscription. Plan how to handle open periods, corrections, failed submissions, and any required access to the previous system.
Singapore provides a specific example of why migration and retention need separate checks: IRAS says that when changing accounting software, old transactions need not be migrated into the new product, but must be retained for at least five years from the year of assessment or the end of the GST accounting period, as applicable in its guidance. Associated records must also be retained and retrievable on request. This is Singapore-specific guidance, not a universal GST retention period. See IRAS guidance on keeping business records.

A simple way to make the final choice
Ask each shortlisted provider to show how the software handles one ordinary filing cycle and one exception relevant to your business—for example, a refund, a mismatched transaction, a failed invoice submission or a cancellation. Then verify authority-specific compatibility independently, review how data can be exported and retrieved, and compare the complete cost for the users, entities and transaction volume you expect. If a required integration or recordkeeping function cannot be demonstrated or verified, do not treat a general compliance claim as a substitute.
