The founder’s September 25, 2026 announcement pitches it as a response to recurring bills, usage caps, and model refusals. It describes the product and its motivations, but does not independently verify performance, privacy, or ongoing costs.
What Grunz is advertised to do
In a first-person announcement on DEV Community, Grunz’s founder describes a native app for Mac, Windows, and Linux. The intended workflow is to give the agent a goal; it plans work across a repository, writes or edits files, runs commands, observes the result, and tries fixes before reporting back. The founder compares the workflow to Claude Code. The announcement also says a browser version is available for chatting with models.
These are the founder’s descriptions, not results from an independent product test. The announcement does not provide benchmarks or establish how reliably Grunz completes coding tasks.
Tools, planning, and permissions
The founder describes a tool loop with approximately 50 tools, including file operations, shell access, development servers, a headless Chrome browser, image generation, MCP servers, and subagents. The approximate count is the founder’s own figure; no counting method is given.

- Ask before each change: request approval for changes.
- Auto-accept edits: accept edits without asking each time.

The announcement does not explain the precise scope of each permission setting or independently verify how these controls behave. Users considering an agent that can access files and run commands should check the current app’s permission prompts and understand what actions each setting authorizes.

What “no subscription” means—and what it does not
The founder pitches Grunz as a no-subscription coding agent using open-weight models. The announcement says a new device receives a small free balance and that no account, seat, or subscription is required. It does not identify the models, state their licenses, explain where inference runs, or say what usage costs after the free balance is used. “No subscription” therefore does not establish that ongoing use is free.
The founder says refusal training has been stripped from the models. Because the announcement does not name them or provide technical detail, readers cannot assess that claim, the models’ licensing, or what safeguards remain. Removing refusal training is not itself evidence of coding quality or suitability for a particular task.

Privacy claims and where the models run
The founder says the wallet is anonymous and stored on the device, and that messages, prompts, and files are not stored. The announcement supplies no technical documentation or independent evidence for those statements. It also does not establish whether inference happens locally or on remote servers: a wallet kept on a device does not show where a model processes prompts or files.
Before using Grunz with private code, credentials, or customer data, look for current documentation explaining inference hosting, data handling, retention, and the behavior of any connected services. The announcement alone is not enough to treat those privacy claims as verified guarantees.
