To group apps on a phone, drag one app icon onto another on the Home Screen; the phone usually creates a folder. Drag more apps into it. The exact steps vary by device, with some differences between iPhone, Pixel, Samsung Galaxy, and other Android launchers.
Make an app folder on iPhone

Go to the Home Screen and touch and hold an empty area until the apps begin to jiggle.

Drag one app icon onto another. iPhone creates a folder containing both apps.

Drag any additional apps you want into the folder.

To give the folder a name, touch and hold it, tap Rename, enter a name, then tap Done.

An iPhone folder can hold multiple pages of apps. Organizing apps in Home Screen folders does not change how they are organized in App Library. To delete a folder, drag every app out of it; the empty folder disappears automatically. Apple’s iPhone User Guide describes folders as a way to make apps easier to find on Home Screen pages.
Group apps on Android
On Android, the usual method is to drag one Home screen app onto another to create a folder, then move more apps into it. Google’s Android Help calls this option “Make a folder (group).” Some of its instructions apply only to Android 14 and later, and controls can differ between Android versions and device makers. Google’s Android Help provides the general guidance.

Google Pixel
On Pixel, move apps together on the Home screen to create a folder, then drag other apps into it. Removing an app from the Home screen removes its shortcut from that screen; it is not the same as uninstalling the app. See Google Pixel Help.

Samsung Galaxy
On Galaxy, drag apps together to create or fill a folder. You can also open a folder and tap Add (the plus sign) to choose more apps. The precise controls can vary by model and software version. Samsung explains Home screen folders in its Galaxy support guide.

If the folder does not appear

Make sure you are moving an app icon on the Home screen, not trying to group apps from inside Settings or the app list.

On iPhone, first touch and hold the Home Screen background until the icons jiggle, then drag one app onto another.

On Android, try dragging the icons together on the Home screen. Launcher behavior and controls vary by device, so consult the device maker’s instructions if that gesture does not work.

What app folders do—and do not do
A folder groups Home screen icons so they are easier to find. It does not, by itself, hide or secure the apps. Removing an icon from a Home screen can also differ from uninstalling the app: Pixel Help explicitly describes Home screen removal as affecting that screen only.
