Grok vs. Codex: What They Can Catch and What Using Both Costs

Grok and Codex both document coding capabilities, but no matched independent test establishes which catches more bugs. Their costs depend on plan, API use, and billing route.

There is no reliable, published head-to-head result here showing whether Grok or Codex catches more bugs. The providers describe coding-related capabilities, but their product and pricing pages do not establish a comparative defect-detection winner. Costs depend on how you access each service: Grok offers listed consumer plan prices and API billing, while Codex access and charges vary by ChatGPT plan, API-key use, or eligible Enterprise billing.

What does “catching” mean in a Grok vs. Codex comparison?

For code, “catching” can mean finding a real bug, spotting a missed requirement, questioning a faulty assumption, or flagging a risky change in review. Those are different outcomes. A tool can identify a plausible concern that is not actually a defect, or miss a problem outside the code and context it was given.

There is no matched independent test in the reviewed provider materials that measures Grok and Codex on the same bugs, repositories, tools, and review rubric. So the evidence supports a comparison of documented features and access—not a claim that one catches more defects.

What each service says it can do

Codex: coding agent and code review

OpenAI describes Codex as “an AI agent that helps you write, review, and ship code.” Its documentation lists access through desktop, CLI, IDE extension, and web, with Codex Cloud available only to eligible accounts and subject to rollout and workspace settings. These are documented product capabilities, not a guarantee that every feature is available to every account. OpenAI’s Codex access documentation

Grok: coding plus web and X search

xAI describes Grok’s API as supporting coding, text generation and reasoning, tool calling, and live web and X search, among other capabilities. Web or X access may help with research questions that depend on current public information, but a listed capability does not show how accurately Grok finds a particular bug. xAI’s API documentation

How to find out which catches more in your code

For a meaningful choice, run both on representative work rather than relying on broad feature claims. Keep the comparison controlled so a better result reflects the tool rather than different context or instructions.

  1. Choose representative cases. Include known defects, real code-review tasks, and changes with explicit requirements. Use cases your team can judge reliably.
  2. Give each tool equivalent context. Use the same repository snapshot, issue description, relevant files, tool access, and web access. Record any difference in available integrations or settings.
  3. Use the same review prompt and limits. Ask each to identify defects, explain evidence, and distinguish confirmed problems from possible risks or suggestions.
  4. Score against a shared rubric. Track true defects found, missed defects, false alarms, and whether each finding is actionable. Do not count a plausible-sounding warning as a correct catch unless the code or a test supports it.
  5. Repeat runs where results may vary. Compare the pattern across runs, not a single response, and account for model, settings, and usage limits.

This evaluates performance for your workflow; it does not create a universal ranking. Repository size, language, test coverage, task framing, model selection, and access to tools can all affect results.

What Grok and Codex cost

The figures below are those shown on the providers’ official pages when accessed in 2026. Prices, model names, feature availability, usage limits, taxes, and regional checkout terms can change, so check the linked pages before choosing a plan.

Grok consumer plans

xAI’s pricing page lists Free at $0/month, SuperGrok at $30/month, and SuperGrok Plus at $100/month. The plans have different features and usage levels, and the page includes other tiers; these three prices are not equivalent usage bundles or a complete list of all available options. See xAI’s current plan comparison.

Grok API

xAI lists its grok-4.6 API model with a 500,000-token context window and rates of $2 per million text input tokens and $6 per million output tokens. These are API rates for the listed model and token categories—not the price of a consumer subscription—and separately priced tool or media use may add charges. Model names and rates can change. Check xAI’s API details.

Codex access and billing

Codex is available through ChatGPT plans with limits that vary by plan. Signing in with ChatGPT uses the applicable plan usage and billing; using an API key follows API pricing. OpenAI says standard Codex Cloud environments have no separate VM charge at launch, while model usage counts against the applicable allowance, credits, or billing. Eligibility, rollout, and workspace settings can affect access. Review OpenAI’s access and billing details.

OpenAI’s Enterprise rate card applies to the stated token-based Enterprise billing arrangement, not individual subscription value or another organization’s negotiated terms. It lists model-specific input, cached-input, and output rates per million tokens; actual charges depend on token use and may include other feature charges. The basic calculation is:

(input tokens × input rate + cached-input tokens × cached-input rate + output tokens × output rate) ÷ 1,000,000

Add applicable feature charges. The rate card’s specific model prices should be checked directly rather than assumed to apply to every Codex user. OpenAI Enterprise token-based rate card.

For historical context, OpenAI announced token-billed Codex-only seats for Business and Enterprise on April 2, 2026. The announcement says new Business pay-as-you-go seats stopped being available starting June 24, 2026, while existing seats were unaffected by that update. Check current plan terms before relying on that route. OpenAI’s team-pricing announcement and update.

What would using both cost?

There is no universal combined monthly price. A total depends on which Grok plan or API route you use, how Codex is billed, the usage allowance included in each account, and the amount of work, tokens, and separately charged features involved.

  • Two subscriptions: add the current subscription prices for the plans you select, while checking their different limits and included features. The Grok plan figures above do not determine the price of a ChatGPT plan.
  • API use: estimate each service separately from its applicable model rates and expected input/output volume, then check for tool, media, or other feature charges. A consumer subscription price is not an API rate.
  • Codex Enterprise token billing: calculate input, cached input, and output at the applicable rate-card prices, then add applicable feature charges. Do not use this method to estimate an individual subscription or a different negotiated arrangement.

To estimate your own total, define the billing route for each product, estimate how often you will use it and the likely token or included-usage consumption, then verify current terms. Without those assumptions, a single “cost of the pair” would be misleading.

Which should you choose?

  • Choose by workflow first: Codex’s documented focus is writing, reviewing, and shipping code; Grok’s API documentation also lists live web and X search alongside coding capabilities.
  • Check access and context: confirm the client, repository context, tools, cloud eligibility, workspace settings, and account limits you actually need.
  • Compare evidence, not labels: run a controlled test on your own representative tasks and judge verified findings, missed defects, and false positives.
  • Compare billing routes like for like: distinguish subscriptions and included usage from token-based API or Enterprise charges. A subscription price and a per-token rate do not buy equivalent workloads.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
